What a shame. He did us proud but just couldn’t get them over the line. Hope he’s successful in whatever he does next.

TinkerTiger · 16/07/2024 11:54

Crazy. The team has done so well under him. I wonder if it was a personal choice or he felt pushed. If it's the latter it's ridiculous, they came second!

Redshoeblueshoe · 16/07/2024 11:56

What a shame.

Poolstream · 16/07/2024 11:57

The best England manager since Alf Ramsey.
Has done us proud.

Scautish · 16/07/2024 11:59

I think that every fan who threw plastic beer glasses at him should be banned from football forever. Utter dicks

he has achieved more than every manager bar one (in 1966) and he should be recognised for that. Knighthood well deserved.

Tomorrowisanewday · 16/07/2024 12:21

I'm a Scotland supporter, but definitely don't support the "anyone but England" nonsense - I think Gareth Southgate has done a tremendous job as England manager, and it'll be interesting to see who the FA thinks can fill his shoes.

Blondephantom · 16/07/2024 12:26

He has done an amazing job. I do think the time is right to pass on the mantle to someone new. The difference Gareth Southgate has made is huge but that doesn’t necessarily mean he is the person to take them forward.

kiterunning · 16/07/2024 12:47

Sad but inevitable really. The press and social media pressure would have been too much for a decent man to bear..and his family.
Who next? Carsley?Howe?Potter?

GelatinousDynamo · 16/07/2024 12:48

So let's speculate who's next: Klopp? Would be my bet.

Westfacing · 16/07/2024 12:49

I heard Carsley, Howe & Potter's names mentioned earlier - but why?

Westfacing · 16/07/2024 12:50

I'd go for Klopp! Wishful thinking

cupcaske123 · 16/07/2024 12:51

Here are the odds:

Graham Potter: 6/4
Eddie Howe: 5/1
Lee Carsley: 11/2
Thomas Tuchel: 6/1
Mauricio Pochettino: 7/1
Jurgen Klopp: 14/1
Ralf Rangnick: 16/1
Frank Lampard, Pep Guardiola: 20/1
Jose Mourinho: 25/1
Michael Carrick: 33/1

It's a shame, he has done such a good job. I hope it was his decision.

Whitesapphire · 16/07/2024 12:54

So sad about that, he’s a lovely man and did us proud.

LaurieFairyCake · 16/07/2024 13:09

Best England manager ever Sad

Poug · 16/07/2024 13:14

100% the right decision. Gareth has done a lot of good. But his preferred way of playing is outdated. Wish him well. He has laid a solid foundation for England.

He's been a successful manager getting the team to where they are, made a lot of money but its time to go, Kane should go too after his pathetic "penalty".

What pathetic penalty?

If that’s what @MissMoneyFairy is referring to, I don’t think it’s ’pathetic’ at all. It probably shouldn’t have been awarded, but I’m not complaining! And Harry Kane executed it perfectly - he’s a master penalty-taker. So if anyone should be criticised for it, it should be the referee for awarding it - not Harry!

Acapulco12 · 16/07/2024 17:44

Just to add that I don’t think Kane should go. I hope the new manager keeps him on.

I may be a bit biased, as I’m a big fan of his, but surely his record with England and Bayern/Spurs speaks for itself. To me, it’s obvious from his overall record, his recent season with Bayern and his goals this Euros that he’s got plenty more to give the team. Yes his performance this Euros was patchy, but he could still be carrying his end-of-season injury, and he’s still young-ish, so I think he’ll continue to be an asset to the squad - especially after he has a good rest over summer.

He recovered very quickly after his injury, it wasn't worthy of a penalty

User135644 · 16/07/2024 17:56

England's best manager in a long time but the football was too defensive and limiting a lot of the time for the quality of players that have emerged.

He got a lot of luck with favourable draws as well.
