I've missed these games and they sound like the most interesting.

Why is Ronny crying. They've topped the group so why the drama queen antics?

Because Ronny.

GarethSouthgatesWaistcoat · 26/06/2024 21:34

Sorry to be an idiot, can Georgia go through if they win? Is it dependent on the Czechia/Turkey final score?

burblish · 26/06/2024 21:37

All the snark on Ronaldo on this thread has me cackling away with such mean glee! 😄

He's awful! The bench is the best place for him in that mood 😂 Georgia have been brilliant.

Villagetoraiseachild · 26/06/2024 21:44

I really need a wee but darent leave the room!

I think that if Czechia and Georgia both win, they'd both go through to the next round with four points each (although not sure who'd be second and who'd go through as a third place finisher), and Turkey would drop to fourth. If Czechia don't win and Georgia do, Georgia go through (as things stand) in third, and Turkey in second. Edited again to add: which I think means Georgia will go through if they win, regardless of the Czechia v Turkey result, which is what you actually asked! 😆

DuncinToffee · 26/06/2024 21:45

The ref in Cze Tur game is busy handing out yellows, 12 so far

I hope the England team are watching Georgia, and manage to pick up some tips.

They're incredible.

Villagetoraiseachild · 26/06/2024 21:52

It's not like Portugal aren't trying.

burblish · 26/06/2024 21:53

Wow, wow, wow - not just the result but the performance!

Whinge · 26/06/2024 21:54

Villagetoraiseachild · 26/06/2024 21:52

It's not like Portugal aren't trying.

Agreed, and that makes it so much more impressive. Portugal are really trying and yet still they're being outplayed.

Georgia win 2-0

By far the best game of the tournament

DuncinToffee · 26/06/2024 21:54

Cenk Tosun just scored for Turkey Grin

That was Stunning!

DuncinToffee · 26/06/2024 21:55

Well played Georgia, that was a great game!

What a match!

Thank you burblish for the explanation!!

burblish · 26/06/2024 21:58

It's going to be England v Slovakia in the next round, and then (if we beat them!) either Italy or Switzerland in the QF.

BagFullOfNoodles · 26/06/2024 22:05

Great match to watch, I just saw what looked like the ref in the turkey/Czechia match handing out reds after the final whistle ?!

burblish · 26/06/2024 22:05

Good lord, 16 yellows and two reds (one outright, the other after a yellow) in the Czechia-Turkey game. That's quite extraordinary.

YouOnlyCameToSeeEboue · 26/06/2024 22:06

No team is looking like the eventual winner at the moment...

GarethSouthgatesWaistcoat · 26/06/2024 22:10

What happens with reds given after a final whistle if the team aren't going through?!

Acapulco12 · 26/06/2024 22:16

Come on England!!! I know that public opinion is (understandably) verging on the negative/hostile, but I read this quote from Gareth Southgate and briefly felt that lovely, fuzzy 2018 feeling all over again.

I know it’s no longer 2018, I know we’re years past the Southgate honeymoon period and that we have played poorly so far this time, and don’t really deserve to have got as far as we have, but I still felt a glimmer of hope.

Southgate has made a few poor decisions that didn’t pay off in the tournament so far, but he’s still fundamentally a really decent man and a fantastic coach and man-manager, who has bags of belief in his players. Come on, England!! Show us what you’re made of 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 🦁

burblish · 26/06/2024 22:21

@Acapulco12 I agree that Southgate is a really decent man, and he has done an incredible job in changing the whole atmosphere around the national team (players actually want to play for England again and Southgate has created a proper, unified team feeling as opposed to the club-clique mentality of the Capello years). He is articulate, thoughtful, dignified and he knows from personal experience what it means to play for England. As a tactician, though, he just isn't good enough.

Edited to add: I thought it was disgraceful that fans were throwing drinks glasses at him and booing him at the end of the Slovenia match. That's not right.

Cadela · 26/06/2024 22:25

Thing is with Southgate is that he built our expectations up. So when we start start playing like England proper it’s devastating.

I still hate the team he picked. And I do think this is his last few weeks as England manager.

I’m praying for Klopp! Unlikely I know

Me too. It was horrible to watch. It’s such nasty behaviour. I thought we were past that years ago.

And I agree with all your points - he’s a fantastic role model as a person/leader/man-manager but not a very effective tactician.

Acapulco12 · 26/06/2024 22:34

The thing I don’t understand though - and this is a genuine question- is why Southgate’s contract keeps getting renewed if he’s not a very effective tactician. He’s an amazing manager, so I wonder if a) the FA think that’s good enough, especially with his decent record as manager so far and b) no one else wants the job. I think it’s b) 😂😂
