The thing I don’t understand though - and this is a genuine question- is why Southgate’s contract keeps getting renewed if he’s not a very effective tactician. He’s an amazing manager, so I wonder if a) the FA think that’s good enough, especially with his decent record as manager so far and b) no one else wants the job. I think it’s b) 😂😂

Southgate's contract was originally supposed to expire after the Qatar World Cup, but in the aftermath of the Euros in 2021 the FA extended it for a further two years because he had just done better than any England manager since 1966 by getting to a major final.

Also I guess they didn't fancy going into a World Cup with speculation about who might be managing the team afterwards, wanted security and continuity. Then England met expectations in Qatar, so no problem. It's just since then it has been a bit up and down.

If I was him I would want to leave after this tournament even if we win it. After the war England only had two managers in the next 28 years but times have changed and the criticism is vicious and personal.

Ah I see - that’s really helpful, thanks. I respect him so much and have been really impressed by him, but I agree it’s probably best that he leaves after this Euros, as it’s a good idea to get in someone new, given he’s led the team for a while now. I hope he gets to leave on a high, whether he chooses to leave immediately post-Euros or a bit later.

I don't know if anyone watched The Damned United the other night, but a very interesting part of the story was the importance of the role of Peter Taylor (?name) to Brian Clough's incredible success. In this case he was his scout and very good at identifying what was lacking in the team and supplying it. Plus his personality was a good match for Brian.

Gareth is great on a lot of levels, maybe he just needs a complementary team member to nail the tactics and the right selection and team alchemy.

It might be a good thing if expectations are currently low, then any win is a bonus.

I'm quite hopeful for the knock out stages - I feel like we were moaning about the boringness in the group stages at the world Cup & the last Euros and then suddenly Harry Kane wakes up and scores a couple of goals when we need them, a bit of a lucky break
and we're back in business especially if we can continue to be tight at the back.

I think Southgate should/will go even if we win it. Graham Potter or Eddie Howe would be my bets for next manager.
Just praying Southgate doesn't end up at United - I read Michael Calvin's No Hunger in Paradise recently and it talked a lot about Dan Ashworth when he was at St George's Park and the whole set up that him and Southgate and others implemented.

Out of curiosity, why do you not want Southgate to end up at Manchester United? Obviously he hasn’t had much recent experience of managing club football, but that’s the main reason I can think of for why he wouldn’t necessarily be a good fit.

JasonTindallsTan · 28/06/2024 23:50

I’d be very surprised if Howe went to England. He’s all in on project NUFC and he does his best work on the training pitch week in week out and I’m not sure the England job would be a good fit given he’d only get the players a couple of weeks at a time throughout the year.

YouOnlyCameToSeeEboue · 28/06/2024 23:52

Howe's getting money and opportunities at Newcastle. He'd be mad to leave.

I'd like to see Southgate at Man Utd, but that's because I want them to do really badly...

stuckdownahole · 29/06/2024 10:48

Potter might be the wrong one for England given that he has always done well at small clubs with unknown players and failed with the big names at Chelsea.

I have noticed that during Southgate's time, the players that have really shone are the ones that had to work their way up, like Maguire and Walker who both started at Sheffield United, Pickford from Sunderland and Stones from Barnsley, or those that are obviously humble and respectful like Saka and Kane. The ones that don't seem to show their best for England are the starlets like Trent Alexander-Arnold and Foden who came through the ranks at huge clubs.

I wonder if those players are giving Southgate the same respect they give their club managers. And he played 50 times for England! It might be worse for Potter who barely had a playing career at all.

Argh I was just typing out a reply and then deleted it by accident 😭😭

That’s a really interesting point about the players that have benefited most from Southgate’s time as manager. I’d also add Marcus Rashford and Dele Alli to that list, although I know they’re not playing at this Euros.

Also, on a separate note, I thought Dele generally did very well under Southgate - and under Pochettino at Spurs. I’ve got a real soft spot for him and I think he’s an excellent footballer. I recently read that he wants to get into the 2026 World Cup squad and I wish him all the best with that - I definitely think he could make it. It will be really tough, as he’s not regularly training with a club at the moment, and hasn’t been for some time, and is also coming to the end of his contract, which complicates things, but I’ve heard that his current club - Everton - have been supportive of him. I really wish him all the best. He’s got so much talent and potential and I hope he gets to use it again.

Going back to the players who’ve thrived under Southgate, re Foden and Trent, they’re clearly both fantastic footballers and more than worthy of being in the England squad.

The issue that’s coming up at this Euros is that their England squad positions are not those they’d normally play in, which is obviously difficult and creates problems for them and their team mates.

I think this has come about because, whilst Southgate has a massive selection of players to choose from who are capable of being in his squad and who also want to play in it, he doesn’t have enough team resilience, because he’s picked too many players who are competing for the same positions, because those are the ones in which they play best (e.g. Kane and Bellingham both generally play in the same position). I don’t think the squad has enough players available to make it a solid and strong team. We have tons of players who are amazing strikers/goal scorers, but not many players who enjoy being midfielders and supporting the strikers.

Anyone care to predict the final score for this game?

DuncinToffee · 29/06/2024 17:17

Difficult one to call, 1-0 Italy because I have an Italian in my fantasy team

GOAL

1-0 Switzerland

Acapulco12 · 29/06/2024 17:38

I reckon it’ll go to penalties and Italy will win.

Swiss goal was nice.

Villagetoraiseachild · 29/06/2024 17:44

I was going to predict a Swiss win as I don't think Italy are at their usual standard, but they are past masters at pulling some magic out of the bag at the last minute, so it would be foolish to underestimate them.

Whinge · 29/06/2024 18:06

2-0 Switzerland

That was a speedy goal

Oblomov24 · 29/06/2024 18:06

Again. Ha ha.

Villagetoraiseachild · 29/06/2024 18:06

Blimey....

LadyShimura · 29/06/2024 18:07

Blimey, Italy didnt even have time to blink before that happened.

SGsling · 29/06/2024 18:28

I’m probably the only person watching this with SRF -Swiss commentary.

They’ve described the second goal as a work or art, a Picasso.
