Can't find a thread so thought I'd start one nice and early for some pre chat.

Really don't think either England or Wales are going to get out of the pool rounds 🙁

Yes I’m English so I happily support all the home nations.

And South Africa as I have family there.

I’m English so generally happily support anyone but the other home nations. Except when they play South Africa because my husband is South African and I’m a contrary little bugger.

Have two french great grandparents so I use that when it suits me.

Phos · 10/09/2023 09:06

What are people’s thoughts on the Scotland match? I want to say I think they will cause an upset but South Africa have a bad habit of shining at world cups and they’re playing annoyingly well this year.

Hate the anthems. The choir seem lovely and it's a wonderful organisation but it takes away so much from the build up and atmosphere. That opening skirl of the lone piper is as integral to Scotland as the Haka is to the All Blacks.

Well done to England and Ireland on yesterday's results. As an Edinburgh fan, it was great to see Boff in action but ultimately England ran rings around Argentina.

Abhannmor · 10/09/2023 09:12

If Ireland don't escape the group of Death ☠ I'll transfer me affections to Scotland.

I too wonder why drop goals aren't used more often. France reeled NZ in with 3 drop goals in 99 and won a famous victory. From 14 points down. England kncked Australia out with a dg. SA scored 5 dgs v England and so on.

KnickerlessParsons · 10/09/2023 09:20

That's interesting. Really hope they stick with Ford when Farrell's back and don't ship Farrell off to 12.

I think Farrell might have to fight to justify his place in the team once his ban is over.

My favourite moments last night were seeing the smile on Joe Marchent's face as he ran through the tunnel to start and Joe Marler's facial contortions. Quinn's season ticket holder.

I don't think Borthwick has the courage to keep Faz out of the starting line up. Sadly Marcus will be the one to miss out.

grass321 · 10/09/2023 10:01

Sports autobiographies are usually massive boring but Joe Marler's is a joy if anyone wants a Christmas present idea.

Very entertaining and (as embarrassed as I am to admit this), probably the only book my teenagers have managed to finish this year,

trockodile · 10/09/2023 10:10

Well done to England-it was a strange match to watch but George Ford was excellent-Los Pumas just seemed to implode! It may just have been that the cameras only showed a particular narrative but Owen Farrell looked less than pleased every time I saw him! I do like Joe Marler, it was nice to see him looking happy!

The fitness tracker or a different pocket?

duc748 · 10/09/2023 17:18

Transducer for GPS? They have them in all sports these days.

greenacrylicpaint · 10/09/2023 17:20

a bit big for a tracker. and the wrong pilosition for a heart monitor.

greenacrylicpaint · 10/09/2023 17:23

sort of wishing it's a pocket for an ice pack because I want one today

watching through my fingers - pretty rough game do far.

KnickerlessParsons · 10/09/2023 17:30

It's the GPS thingy. All players have them.

I thought the choir's style really suited both anthems for Scotland and SA - although I might just be getting used to it. Firmly supporting England but I would love Scotland to win today.

Huwipulotu · 10/09/2023 17:54

So the TMO decided the head on head contact wasn’t even worthy of a review, despite being exactly the same thing Curry was sent off for? And then the same TMO tried to get Finn sent off?? Very puzzling

And very frustrating as SA should be down to 14.

GrouchyKiwi · 10/09/2023 17:57

I can't believe we're still talking about the need for consistency in decisions. Make a Law and back it up with the officiating.

He should be cited, but that's no help to Scotland right now.

duc748 · 10/09/2023 18:06

Good score from a kick by the Saffies.

GrouchyKiwi · 10/09/2023 18:06

14 for RSA is excellent.

KnickerlessParsons · 10/09/2023 18:11

Have we talked about the lights RSA management are using to send signals yet? How is that allowed?

And that teal kit! They look like a tube of toothpaste. 🦷

OP posts:
JayAlfredPrufrock · 10/09/2023 18:17

Lights?

FinnRussell · 10/09/2023 18:19

Don't think the SA management are too worried about what they're allowed to do judging by the number of water bottle carriers. Frustrating to have had some inconsistencies in imposing rules for tackles. Just hope we can keep the heid and get some points on the board.

grass321 · 10/09/2023 18:20

My son went to SA on a school sports tour this summer and came back with the afore-mentioned teal shirt. It's certainly a statement.

This match hasn't really got going for me.

GrouchyKiwi · 10/09/2023 18:20

Tube of toothpaste. Grin

The signal is about kicking for goal at the penalty, which I don't think is a big deal. If, however, they're using it for other things then it's a problem, IMO.

GrouchyKiwi · 10/09/2023 18:22

I wonder if Darcy Graham is annoyed with himself for not passing in that try-scoring opportunity in the first half. They would have been night impossible to stop from that position and it would have changed the complexion of the game completely.

Christian Cullen did similar against the Aussies about 20 years ago and the ABs made him carry a ball with him everywhere for a whole week. Grin
