Can't find a thread so thought I'd start one nice and early for some pre chat.

Really don't think either England or Wales are going to get out of the pool rounds 🙁

Very excited to find this thread, mumsnet is usually fairly devoid of rugby chat! Scotland/Glasgow Warriors fan here too-The Fagersons (especially Matt) must be the nicest players in rugby! Love all the Glasgow boys though (in a maternal fashion 😂). I was at all the summer matches at Murrayfield, the players were all lovely and spent so much time with the fans after the game 💙
I’m going to see them play in Lille and then Paris-very excited. Also hoping its cooler by then!
Fingers crossed for a win on Sunday against South Africa-I’ve no doubt we can do it, whether we will is another story! 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

So jealous of my sisters who both managed to get tickets and who have just met up in Marseille. Grrrrr. Wish I was there

And my husband who's gone on a three day corporate jolly to Marseille

I'm going to watch St Helens and Leigh first, but I'm recording France/NZ, and will run the rule over it later. 😀On current form, from what I've seen lately, it'll be a big improvement on watching England!

Rookie93 · 08/09/2023 19:57

Down nr Bordeaux for Ireland vRomania tomorrow and watching the opening ceremony on tv. Excited to see NZ in action, although they were not so hot against SA. Its very warm but loving the atmosphere.

blobby10 · 08/09/2023 20:10

What did you all think of the opening ceremony? I couldn’t work out what on earth was going on but I struggled with the london Olympics one so could be just me!🤣🤣

Pretty much anything would be an improvement on watching England, to be fair

Abhannmor · 08/09/2023 20:26

Ireland fan. But I think England will improve and should make the semis. All the best teams are in the other half of the draw and will have bashed hell out of each before England face them.

Ireland v Scotland will be a vital game as I can't see either of them beating the Springboks. Should they both escape the Group of Death they will face the All Blacks or France. Goodnight Vienna?

Sad to see Wales in such poor form. But they will have no expectations/ pressure and are good at off the cuff rugby. I think Scotland could surprise people.

I'd quite forgotten you're allowed to run with the ball....

GrouchyKiwi · 08/09/2023 21:42

Looks like it's horribly hot there. Their shirts are as wet as if it's raining.

I hate this high ball law.

MsMarch · 08/09/2023 22:05

Realised my original post didn't clarify that I am SA!!!

I predicted France tonight and feeling pretty good about that! All blacks not looking great!!!

duc748 · 08/09/2023 22:07

Catching up now. I fast-forwarded through the punditry and the opening ceremony, which looked a little, well, odd.

Davros · 08/09/2023 22:09

Boo hoo. Not happy with tonight's result.
The opening ceremony was shite and the national anthems were utterly dreadful

GrouchyKiwi · 08/09/2023 22:10

NZ hasn't been looking good for a while. It's good for the rest of the world to have a turn. Wink

I'd quite like France to win it this year.

Weepingwillows12 · 08/09/2023 22:14

Random opening ceremony, poor sound on the anthems and a slightly nervy game but I still loved it. Glad France found the way to win.

CollieDug · 08/09/2023 22:15

great match tonight. I think is a good result for ALL northern hemisphere sides

also want to say I ❤️❤️❤️❤️ all the Glasgow warriors fans here!! The Fagersons are just lovely!

and here’s my collie - he’s a big warriors fan too :-)

He's lovely colliedug. Lot of love for the Fagersons. I don't know much about them but will keep an eye on them Sunday.

HurricanesPoua · 08/09/2023 22:18

All Blacks really didn't show up in 2nd half!

My 13 year old NZ born daughter watched it in Paris as she's just been playing there in a 7s tournament- receiving very grumpy texts from her just now!

The anthems were awful! We thought they'd done it deliberately at first to put NZ off, but the French one was worse 😱

Theoldwoman · 08/09/2023 22:20

Kiwi here.

Got up at 3am to watch the opening match!
Enjoyed it, even though we lost.

Its now getting on for 5:30am, taking my DC to work, then back home to catch up on some sleep 💤

CollieDug · 08/09/2023 22:30

Good night Kiwi fans - not the result you wanted but actually other than psychological impact result means not much as you’ll likely be playing either SA or IRE in quarters. (Unless the fagersons &co surprise us!).

love this game. So much. Big love to all fans, whatever your country.

KnickerlessParsons · 08/09/2023 22:36

All Blacks aren't going to win the whole shebang if they keep playing like that!
Well done France - best team won.

It’s so hot. Watching the match made me even hotter.
The anthems were dire. How disappointing for them.

Excellent haka, though.

duc748 · 09/09/2023 00:07

I thought it was a pretty good game. As it should be, with two of the best sides in the world. Great effort from France in the second half. Also, I liked the ref. He seemed to let the game flow, English refs often seem so fussy to me.
