Can't find a thread so thought I'd start one nice and early for some pre chat.

Really don't think either England or Wales are going to get out of the pool rounds 🙁

Ireland v Tonga. Not madly confident. France had a horrorshow v Uruguay 🇺🇾.

algasport · 16/09/2023 19:22

Wakes really struggled tonight. A scrappy game. I think they were surprised by Portugal.
They'll have to play a lot better against Australia.

algasport · 16/09/2023 19:29

Wales!!

AndNobbyDancing · 16/09/2023 19:49

Same here, I've struggled to watch them today, and have grassroots rugby tomorrow so will only really see the England game.

Trying to organise the MiniNobbys so I can watch the Ireland game but will probably have to pick on up in the middle of it.

Wayne Barnes is such a fantastic ref- it's such a shame that England can never have him in charge.

I felt the same about Nigel Owens

I really don't like Wayne Barnes refereeing Wales. He is always really hard on us.

algasport · 16/09/2023 22:30

@KnickerlessParsons
Yes Nigel Owens was fantastic as well

algasport · 16/09/2023 22:32

Just can't wait for Ireland v SA and Scotland.

duc748 · 16/09/2023 23:51

I always preferred Owens to Barnes, who always seems very fussy to me. But TBF, Tonga only have themselves to blame mostly of the pens they conceded. Hopefully the games will get tighter as the comp progresses. I want to see games where there's everything to play for with five minutes left! Lovely score by Hansen in that match.

KnickerlessParsons · 17/09/2023 00:46

I love it when Barnsey speaks French. His accent is awful.

duc748 · 17/09/2023 00:53

Heh! It is. I reckon my school French is better. And that was a long time ago!

Abhannmor · 17/09/2023 00:57

Nigel Owens was a class act. I love the way he'd stand over the ruck saying ' come on lads , we 'aven't got all day you know!'

Yes, much as I love Ireland winning. I do love a tight match (no one else loves he screaming). SA and maybe Scotland will be a much different story!

Not world cup related but stood watching my 10 year old play this morning and he's still avoiding tackling. Wondering if any of you had kids that, in theory, say they love rugby but just won't tackle and how / if they got over it? He's not afraid of contact and will happily run into anyone if he's carrying the ball.

One of my brothers was like this. I think my Dad showed him proper tackling technique and helped him feel confident in it. Maybe talk to the coach about doing a few sessions on this for the team so he doesn't feel singled out? (I assume they do anyway, but it might be worth a bit of a focus on it.)

Floralnomad · 17/09/2023 12:11

I enjoyed the Ireland game , although the score wasn’t close it was action packed .

duc748 · 17/09/2023 12:15

Apart from the re-set scrums...

I would chat to the coach, but I don't think this is too unusual for younger players. It is intimidating, maybe there can be some one on one coaching. My ds was the same, a little bit older when he started to play, but being small built I think was a factor.

I'm watching the SA vs Romania game now. Romania just need to see this game through now.

And now the rain has started. Hopefully will cool things down a bit.

switch to tag?

but tbh tackling at that age is a bit early. at dc school they play tag exclusively until y8.
much much safer.

One of my sons was like that at rugby. We tried most things but ultimately it came down to tackling or losing your place in the team as things get more serious.

The other advice would be to maybe choose a position which is less about tackling. Technically everyone has to tackle but scrum halves, for example, tackle less than the forwards. There's also a difference in the type of tackling. Forwards tend to have the larger players trundling towards them more slowly whereas full backs often have to tackle people running at full speed. Wings often tackle less but they can be crucial tackles.

Ultimately everyone will have stronger parts of their game so provided your tackling is adequate, you can make up for it by being a good runner, kicker or whatever.

Weepingwillows12 · 17/09/2023 16:21

Thanks all. Didn't watch the South Africa game but seems to have been as expected from the score. Looking forward to Australia Fiji as a neutral. Hoping for a close game. Already nervous for England later.

algasport · 17/09/2023 16:38

I hope Fiji play well against Australia and have a close game. They deserved so much more against Wales.

KnickerlessParsons · 17/09/2023 17:36

I'm in a quandary re Fiji v Aus.
I'd love Fiji to win, but if Aus win, I think that almost guarantees Wales get out of the pool round so I want them to win too.

Aus need to get a shufty on if they're going to win though. Fiji looking good (again).

I’d like Wales to get out of the group but I’d love to see Australia get beaten ( by anybody ) .
