I never knew Haiti were so young! And so good

Poor performance so far.

Based upon this performance, we aren't winning the World Cup!

WhatWouldHopperDo · 22/07/2023 12:19

They don’t seem to be getting players in the box for closer shots on goal.

(As if I know anything!)

DuncinToffee · 22/07/2023 12:21

That's credit to Haiti, closing England down stopping them from getting players in the box.

DuncinToffee · 22/07/2023 12:29

FT 1-0 England

So bizarre at the end!

Brefugee · 22/07/2023 12:31

England making hard work of this - but Haiti are very dangerous i think (do they all play in France?)

I am enjoying the Ref sexplaining their decisions - are they doing this for Red cards and so on too? i really think it would be a good idea in the Bundesliga/PL and so on.

That was what the Germans call an Arbeitssieg. Our keeper made a couple of really good saves though. Excellent.

pues · 22/07/2023 12:31

Better second half. I seem to wish half my life away when watching football. Time goes so slowly when you're winning!

LadyShimura · 22/07/2023 12:32

Well, England were bloody lucky to come away with the win.

If Haiti used their chances, they'd have nailed England to the wall.

DuncinToffee · 22/07/2023 12:33

A win is a win.

Haiti looks exciting and such a young squad, great for international football

I hate 1-0. Especially in the stadium.

Also my least favourite time of a match (especially at 1-0) is the 70th - 80th minute. It seems to last half an hour. And then 80-90 is over in a flash

pues · 22/07/2023 12:44

@Brefugee
Yes- 70-80 is interminable!

DuncinToffee · 22/07/2023 12:46

China v Denmark next.
Rooting for Denmark wtih 4 toffees starting.

Thanks @DuncinToffee for this thread, currently in Italy and they appear to not know that women's football exists so it's not on regular TV (far too busy showing Miss Italia qualifications Grin) so this has been great commentary.
Will be interesting to see if they show the Italy games....

BellaAmorosa · 22/07/2023 21:52

Made it! Four WWC matches, and now I'm watching Arsenal men in a preseason friendly.. Not a lot else has got done today!

Loving the thread, @DuncinToffee!
England win. Not the best performance, but at this stage it's just a relief to get the points. I'm remembering the Austria game from the Euros - it was a workmanlike 1-0 but it gave us a platform. And Haiti were more dangerous than Austria, iirc.

Japan and Spain are the best technical teams in the tournament so far, no question. The US WNT looked ominously good v Vietnam. I'm enjoying this so much - really competitive and the small teams are holding their own for the most part. The favourites are having to produce excellent football to get past organised and brave defences. Some terrific goalkeeping as well. I am so interested to see Germany and France.

DuncinToffee · 23/07/2023 08:29

In the early match, Sweden beat South Africa 2-1 with a last minute winner scored by Arsenal's Ilestedt.

Next Netherlands v Portugal, Hup Holland!
