F1 2023 - Watchalong thread

At the moment it's pre-season testing and they are in Bahrain as that is where the first race happens

Is anyone watching the preseason testing at the moment?

Anyone follow the WTF1 personnel change over the past few weeks (social media channel) and that Tommy & Matt have set up P1 with just Matt & Tommy as co-owners?

I'm really looking forward to seeing what progress the other teams have been able to make since RBR had their wind tunnel time reduced due to their overspend in 2022 (that was their punishment for doing that).

I know, Vegas could be an ice rink for F1 cars. However, Haas may do well as they seem to get high tyre deg, lower temperatures may suit them in particular.

Haas podium? Yes please, that would be nice for them in a US GP. We can dream eh.

Brazilianadventure · 08/11/2023 15:07

We can dream, I was thinking points rather than podiums.

Sulusu · 08/11/2023 15:42

It's chaos on the first few corners thanks to really cold tyres, leaving both Red Bulls, Mercs and Ferraris retiring. Both McLarens limp back to the pit lane. But wait, who is that emerging from the haze of tyre smoke? It's two unscathed Williams followed by the two Haas. The crowd goes wild as they watch home boy Logan Sargent battling the Haas of Hulkenburg for first!

👀😁

WeighDownOnMe · 08/11/2023 16:38

Bit early for heavy drinking 😆😆

Brazilianadventure · 08/11/2023 17:34

😂😂 that reminds me of Spa and the carnage triggered by DC in the rain. I also quite like the Singapore race with Max in a Kimi and Seb Ferrari sandwich.

Brazilianadventure · 15/11/2023 10:12

Vegas week -loads of razzmatazz and celebs who know nothing about F1, but what about the important bit - the racing.

Everyone is predicting an ice rink track with lots of references to Turkey 2020. Will they be right?

gingercat02 · 15/11/2023 12:50

Absolutely @Brazilianadventure
I can't help but feel they have thrown everything they can at Vegas for the theatre rather than the race. Night Race, street circuit, giant dome, celebs galore, even cards suits on the kerbs.
It's a bit mad

Brazilianadventure · 15/11/2023 13:14

It could be good mad but it could also be cringe mad like the Miami intros.

WeighDownOnMe · 15/11/2023 13:19

It's fun!

Tell you what - as someone fairly new to the sport it's mad to me the amount of moaning about it that goes on 😆

Then again, football is the same!

HolibobsinApril · 16/11/2023 18:10

I am looking forward to it but, but also think it could be carnage, which makes me look forward to it even more (as long as no one gets hurt of course!)

I would quite like to see the opening ceremony that they had last night, does anyone know were I can see it? I have Sky F1 but can't see it on there.

It's on YouTube :)

LightsOutAndAwayWeGooooo · 16/11/2023 19:09

Watching it on YouTube now and honestly it's too show like for me. Not about the racing at all, so have to agree with Max's earlier comments.

WeighDownOnMe · 16/11/2023 20:04

It was on Sky F1 today I think - it's showing in my recordings anyway, but I don't think I'll bother watching it. Not really a Kylie or Journey fan 😁

JimnJoyce · 16/11/2023 21:05

it's in my sky f- recordings but listed as drivers press conference.

i'm watching it now it's insane!

Tilda77 · 16/11/2023 22:53

Just watched the opening ceremony on YouTube. It was very over the top. The drivers when introduced didn't look very enthusiastic. They looked a bit wtf is this all about😅

Brazilianadventure · 17/11/2023 05:12

I thought the opening series was better than I thought it would be. A song from each performer and then the drivers presented very quickly. No interviews etc.

FP1 has issues, Ocon and Sainz both had a manhole cover/ surround hit the underneath of their car - probably sucked up due to air pressure. So only a few laps then red flagged the session. It damaged both cars underfloor which is a huge job to change the chassis.

Fulshaw · 17/11/2023 06:39

This Vegas Grand Prix epitomises everything that is currently wrong with F1. All about the money and not about the racing. 8 minutes of practice before there’s a problem with the track!

WeighDownOnMe · 17/11/2023 08:38

It doesn't make Vegas look great does it. Teething problems I guess? But still...surely there's a gigantic technical spec somewhere for the design and build of the track to give at least minimum quality standards.

wited · 17/11/2023 09:07

Max is being pretty vocal about how much he hates it.

Brazilianadventure · 17/11/2023 09:18

Wow, just seen the Sainz incident on X and from the on board you obviously can’t see the huge plume of sparks, which tells you how bad this was. Fred is very angry as it has damaged so much, not just the floor but gear box and engine.

It appears to be a water valve cover rather than a drain cover but still not a good start. In a way better to happen today so they can double check the whole circuit. The problem is the drivers need some time to learn the circuit and to set up the car properly.

I don't blame him (not a max fan). It's going against everything that F1 was!

I just want to see what celebrities grace the grid lane this weekend lol! Wonder if there will be any more MGK or CD incidents

Sulusu · 17/11/2023 09:55

I watched snippets of the opening ceremony. It did make me laugh, the bit where the drivers were lifted up was a bit like the Hunger Games.

I saw someone did a mashup on Instagram with the Hunger Games idea it was funny.

It's a shit show this morning. It's like 2am or something now in Las Vegas, and they are closing the stands and ordering fans to leave due to "logistical considerations". Las Vegas tickets are very expensive, I would be fuming if I had paid a lot of money and only got to watch 8 laps!

LightsOutAndAwayWeGooooo · 17/11/2023 10:17

And now Sainz has a grid penalty for having to change his engine.... because of the manhole cover!! That's unfair

GrouchyKiwi · 17/11/2023 10:30

That's really unfair re Sainz's penalty! Things like that should be taken into consideration, IMO.

WeighDownOnMe · 17/11/2023 10:35

That is absolute bullshit. Why are they so very bad at applying the rules in a consistent and fair way.
