At the moment it's pre-season testing and they are in Bahrain as that is where the first race happens

Is anyone watching the preseason testing at the moment?

Anyone follow the WTF1 personnel change over the past few weeks (social media channel) and that Tommy & Matt have set up P1 with just Matt & Tommy as co-owners?

I'm really looking forward to seeing what progress the other teams have been able to make since RBR had their wind tunnel time reduced due to their overspend in 2022 (that was their punishment for doing that).

Hmm. Reading about the DQs. It was found in random checks. FIA have always done random checks on things after the race. They checked Norris and Verstappen too it seems.

Toto said it is what it is, no excuses. I think part of the problem is in a sprint weekend, there is only one practice session, and the cars spend most of the weekend under parc ferme conditions. Yet another issue with sprint weekends IMO.

They need a FP2 in there somewhere to give the teams good long run stints to figure things like this out.

Also means Logan Sargent scored his first F1 points. Happy for him, he drove much better all weekend.

Surely he won't be here next year though. Tough season for him.

Aye maybe he won't be. But I think it did his confidence good to have a decent weekend under his belt. It was nice to see as he has looked really down the last couple of races.

Steev · 23/10/2023 08:10

I like him, I always feel bad for the drivers when it's going bad. Like Checho. Multi millionaire or not it's rubbish when you're not performing well

Argh. That's a pretty big mistake from Mercedes. They used to be so on it. Sad

Agree about the lack of practice time over sprint weekends.

mydogisthebest · 23/10/2023 08:27

Gutted for Lewis.

I really dislike the sprint races. They seem pointless to me and if this problem was even partly due to it be a sprint weekend then it surely would be better if they were stopped?

Not a max fan, but the booing is ridiculous!

I think they were booing the person who was handing out the trophies who really should be in Washington trying to get a new Speaker of the House elected in Congress but all of the Republican Party members left for the weekend. Think that might have had something to do with it.

Couldn't believe that I woke up to Lewis and Charles getting disqualified. I think on such a bumpy track they should check more than 4 cars, because 50% of the ones they did test, failed.

OP posts:
Brazilianadventure · 23/10/2023 11:57

@LookItsMeAgain I agree having found 2 different teams breaking the rules they should have checked all the cars. Max’s was checked and was OK.

I think they pick the 4 cars to be tested ahead of time so may have released some cars before spotting the issue.

I am old enough to remember Michael Schumacher losing a win for the same reason.

LookItsMeAgain · 23/10/2023 16:34

But these planks on the under side of each of the cars wear down excessively on a bouncy track. Did RBR put a thicker plank on the car and it just wore down to a normal acceptable level or did Mercedes just keep hitting the bumpiest parts of the track so there was more wear on their plank?

I do think that if they select 4 of 20 cars to test and of those 4, 2 of them (so 50% of the cars tested) failed the test, they should test either all of the cars or at least 50% of the remaining cars to be sure.

Mexico GP this weekend. Apparently Verstappen is getting extra security for it. I think some of the boos on Sunday might have been for Abbot handing out the trophy, but they were booing Max at other times as well over the weekend.

I really hate that this sort of partisan football type shite is in F1 now!

I agree! I'm not a Max fan but probably only because it's boring to support someone who always wins. But I have utmost respect for his talents.

It's like a pantomime.

There is a hurricane approaching Mexico apparently which may interrupt play.

Unfortunately, when Vettel drove for RBR, and he had his string of wins, when he did his "First" finger thing, that often set the crowd off and he got booed for it.

I don't think having extra security is going to endear Max to the Mexican crowd. I mean during his tenure as world champ Lewis didn't have any visible extra security. It might make Max come across as weak and fragile. I do think that if/when Max leaves RBR (which I think will be a very positive thing) that he'll gain the respect he's missing at the moment.

I have set my Sky box to record most of this weekend's coverage as it's on so late.

Nico and Lewis have also received boos, but not like Max did in Austin. It was usually following some on track action.

I think it was the Mexico fans which means it could be really unpleasant this weekend. I don’t know how they will be able to control the crowd but it’s unnecessary.

I agree with @spottedinthewilds I can appreciate Max’s skill but I don’t like some of his driving, particularly when racing Lewis where he seems to be over the line in terms of racing. Off track he does come across as a decent guy.

All the drivers have extra security in Mexico and Brazil as they are more at risk. I know some team personnel have been targeted and I think Jenson Button had a gun waved at his car one year.

LightsOutAndAwayWeGooooo · 28/10/2023 19:08

Checking in for qualifying! Worried how the fans might be here after hearing the boos last weekend...

Brazilianadventure · 28/10/2023 22:52

Well it looks like it might be hours before we know the final grid given all the potential penalties.

Go DR.

Brazilianadventure · 28/10/2023 23:03

Wow Ferrari front row and DR 4th. Fingers crossed no penalties for the top 2.

spottedinthewilds · 28/10/2023 23:19

It's almost as if they have given Danny Ric an RB19 with AT livery!

😂 I wouldn’t be surprised. If he gets through the first lap and is close to Perez at the end it would give Marko and Christian the ammunition they need.

Brazilianadventure · 29/10/2023 09:01

Apparently no penalties so the grid is unchanged.

LookItsMeAgain · 29/10/2023 13:35

I can't believe that Sky Sports F1 is actually going to broadcast an interview with Jos Verstappen.
I think it legitimises/validates the way he treated Max and his siblings as they grew up, how his former wife was treated and I honestly don't think he deserves to be interviewed. Yes, I know he is the father of one of the drivers on the grid but unless they start interviewing all of the parents (mums and dads) of the drivers, they shouldn't single him out. He had his moment in the sun. He should sit down and keep quiet now.

Any thoughts?

I don't know the story at all tbh

WeighDownOnMe · 29/10/2023 15:12

I don't know much about their family, but I saw a short clip once where Jos and Max were discussing his childhood, and Jos said something that made it very clear that he had pushed Max very very hard and that failure was unacceptable.

Max's face was a bit sad, he tried to cover it but it was like he'd swallowed vinegar.

Brazilianadventure · 29/10/2023 18:57

I am sure they have done interviews in the past with Anthony Hamilton, Lewis’ dad. He was very firm with Lewis but there is clearly a lot of love, he also helped Lewis to learn how to lose gracefully and how to deal with racism.

I actually would be more interested in an interview with Max’s Mum, she was very good in carting and I suspect she has also helped Max in a much quieter way.

I recall one story where Jos stopped at a petrol station and told Max to get out of the car, he then drove off. Yes his Mum was in a car a little way behind, but even so it was not a nice thing to do.

I can see why they want to interview Jos.
