F1 2023 - Watchalong thread

At the moment it's pre-season testing and they are in Bahrain as that is where the first race happens

Is anyone watching the preseason testing at the moment?

Anyone follow the WTF1 personnel change over the past few weeks (social media channel) and that Tommy & Matt have set up P1 with just Matt & Tommy as co-owners?

I'm really looking forward to seeing what progress the other teams have been able to make since RBR had their wind tunnel time reduced due to their overspend in 2022 (that was their punishment for doing that).

The seats are in a grandstand on aqua minerale corner. 4k for 2 of us including hotel and transfers which I didn't think was too bad.

BadBadDecisions · 07/10/2023 08:03

That's not too bad actually. Do it, I'm jealous!

Brazilianadventure · 07/10/2023 08:40

@spottedinthewilds that does sound reasonable. 20+ years ago I had a seat at Aqua Minerale and if I recall correctly it was a good view and cars did run wide and go into the gravel.

I stayed in Rimini and had a transfer to the circuit. Rimini was a lovely town to stay in.

My advice is be prepared to do some walking and, sorry to be a bit grim, take plenty of tissues and hand gel and if you can use the portaloos the other women are using- often they are unisex!

What a weird end to qualifying with Piastri finding out about his lap deletion in the middle of the interview.

We were all yelling, Noooo! Don't tell him on air!
Bad finish for the boys in papaya.
I'm mean, but I'd love Lance to get sacked by his own father hides in shame

Brazilianadventure · 07/10/2023 10:34

😂 I think we all think that, I am not going to lose sleep over a Billionaire’s son losing a job he has been given ample chance to prove himself in. I have heard Tennis might be an option.

Thanks for the tips! I hate public toilets but luckily I have a huge bladder! 😂😂

Oscar took it so well bless him.

We're going to Bahrain next year, was much cheaper than a lot of the circuits as we booked it ages ago. £1095 each including flights hotel, tickets, transfers pit walk etc.

BadBadDecisions · 07/10/2023 13:25

Got that's reasonable @BernadetteMatthews

Brazilianadventure · 07/10/2023 13:45

That is good for a package.

They are having issues with the tyres and curbs so we may get a more mixed up race. 3 tyre changes being recommended along with 20 laps maximum.

They have also moved (painted) one of the curbs/run offs to keep them clear of the curb causing the most concern.

Nico (nice outfit) giving the FIA rep a hard time about this impacting F1s image.

BadBadDecisions · 07/10/2023 13:50

I do think it's a weird quirk of the sport, how regularly the governing body gets caught out by its own governance.

I mean...there are thousands of football matches per week in England, as an example, and on almost no occasion is there an incident that needs urgently corrected or there are differing opinions on how to deal with penalties and punishments, etc.

I quite like it as an added element of randomness, but it's odd.

Brazilianadventure · 07/10/2023 14:02

There are a number of differences to football

  1. stadiums are used weekly for most if the year. F1 race tracks are used once a year. They often are changed for other motor sport e.g. Moto GP.
  2. F1 is far more dangerous than football. Yes you can get broken limbs but the relative potential for serious accidents is far greater.
  3. The tyres and cars evolve each year so there is a lot of informed guess work in F1.
The penalties are a different issue, it is appalling the lack of consistency. The oh dear we should have given max a penalty in Singapore doesn’t wash. AD 2021 fundamentally changed the trust between fans and the FIA, Race Director and Stewards. They need to get it sorted.
JimnJoyce · 07/10/2023 14:24

@Brazilianadventure has it spot on re the differences and the way the differing car and tyre specs year on year make an impact beyond speed.
Also have to say I'm loving Naomi's outfit today and Nico's very direct style of questioning

Brazilianadventure · 07/10/2023 15:14

Go Oscar - he is making steady progress in his rookie year.

Sulusu · 07/10/2023 16:45

They need to fix this track deletion issue for next year. For once I am in agreement with Nico Rosberg (not sure that's happened often), that they need to remove the asphalt outside the tracks and replace it with gravel or grass. That way the drivers will make more effort not to go over the kerbs.

Also I'm sure Verstappen was over the line on his last run, not sure why that time wasn't deleted?

Brazilianadventure · 07/10/2023 18:41

@Sulusu I agree Max was over the line.

Brazilianadventure · 07/10/2023 19:10

Yay, Oscar - I have a feeling Lando is not going to be happy that yet again his team mate has won.

spottedinthewilds · 08/10/2023 12:58

I'm erring on the side of caution with booking the Emilia Romagna GP as it was flooded this year and I would be gutted if it was rained off.

I might look at some others.

Please can I ask who you booked this through so that I can look at some other options?

Brazilianadventure · 08/10/2023 17:22

Carlos out with a fuel pump issue. Tyres are going to be a key factor.

Sulusu · 08/10/2023 17:37

The limit of 18 laps for a set of tyres could cause some chaos. Some drivers are going to have to use softs at some point, like Hamilton, but the softs lasted about 6 laps yesterday before degrading.

Interesting.

Tilda77 · 08/10/2023 18:07

Oh no it was looking so promising for Mercedes until they got to the first corner!

Brazilianadventure · 08/10/2023 18:08

Gutted Lewis is out, he had to go for it with being on the soft tyres.

BadBadDecisions · 08/10/2023 18:14

Bloody hell Mercedes!

Piastri really hustling again, hope Alonso can stay ahead of the pack too.

Did Russell just get dinged again? Not their race is it...

Brazilianadventure · 08/10/2023 18:32

Oscar is doing really well. I think top 3 Max, Oscar, Fernando.

BernadetteMatthews · 08/10/2023 19:15

@spottedinthewilds we booked with formula escapes, there's a few companies offering tours but this one was recommended on a Silverstone group. I don't know anything about them though so booked on a credit card for protection.

They seem v good on price.
