After many weeks and months of waiting, we finally have an F1 discussion thread on MN!

Anyone who wants to join is welcome - regardless of how long you've been watching the sport or who you support. My only request is that we keep it respectful even when criticising our favourite driver's rivals.

We're in Barcelona this weekend for round 6 of what has been a thriller of a championship so far. I'm really excited to see how the race unfolds today, if overtaking will prove as difficult as it historically has here, if the Mercs have done a step forward in race pace, how RB and Ferrari will play around with strategy and tyres.

You've got to feel for Leclerc though - leading through the awful weather part of the race and due to a shitty communication from his pit crew lost it for a pit stop. They really have to work on that.

LookItsMeAgain · 29/05/2022 16:54

Who is your Driver of the day???

Do you vote on the F1 site for the driver of the day?

LookItsMeAgain · 29/05/2022 17:03

George Russell - finished 5th.....again!

Lovewineandchocolate · 29/05/2022 17:52

Perez - glad he got there after missing out last week 🏎🏎🏁🏁

StarCourt · 29/05/2022 18:08

Is there no Notebook today as they over ran

I think they said that the Notebook would be on after the coverage of the Indy race.

StarCourt · 29/05/2022 19:16

Looks like Ferrari are protesting both RB's pit exits crossing the line

GrandSlamFinale · 30/05/2022 19:40

I love Ted's notebooks! Just caught up with the one from yesterday.

Race control was a mess, the stewarding and rule application was a mess, but lots of chaos happened on track so that's what people are talking about.

I was happy to see Checo win, he drove well this weekend apart from his Q3 crash.

Such a shame for Leclerc... this is starting to feel like 2017/18 wrt Ferrari. Communication is poor, everybody could see that strategy wouldn't work, and they keep throwing away points whenever they have the fastest car. The next few tracks might be best suited to RB so Max will probably just increase his lead week after week.

I am impressed with how Binotto is handling things though, adopting a no-blame culture instead of firing people each weekend like they used to do a few years back. Still, I hope they've analysed it all internally and those who made the wrong calls have assumed responsibility. Charles was just destroyed yesterday 😞

In case anyone is still watching g the thread... this is a very interesting P3 result! And the Red Bull looks like it is terrible in the wet.
(hopefully the pic works)

Yes I'm watching and can't wait for Quali now

NandoLorris · 18/06/2022 19:29

Promises to be an exciting quali. Vettel was praising the AM yesterday and saying they've made great progress, he certainly looks very comfortable in the car especially in this wet. And Alonso is driving on a different level this weekend

StarCourt · 18/06/2022 19:33

God I'd love to see Alonso get pole

NandoLorris · 18/06/2022 19:45

Me too! Think he is in with a genuine chance. The RB's don't look like they're hiding form in this wet.

StarCourt · 18/06/2022 19:46

I can't see it happening I'd just love if it did

PashunFroot · 18/06/2022 19:47

Just want to place mark, probably won’t post much as I rarely get to watch the race live but happy to see an f1 thread!

Sulusu · 18/06/2022 20:29

Looking at the P3 times, it's going to be wet for quali, but dry for the race tomorrow. I suspect the Red Bulls and maybe Ferrari/Mercedes are risking a dry setup for quali. The Alpines and AMs likely more of a wet set up to make the most of qualification.

Would be lovely to see Vettel or Alonso grab pole later, might not translate to race pace though. I hope I'm wrong and it's like 2012 again with a Seb v Fernando battle out front, rather than a boring Red Bull one two with Le Clerc starting from the back with a penalty.

Rowgtfc72 · 18/06/2022 21:14

Don't rule lando out. He's learnt his lesson with wet weather racing!
Think they be very lucky if they get off wets.

LookItsMeAgain · 19/06/2022 11:54

What on earth happened to the Aston Martin's yesterday in quali? I mean Vettel was in P2 during the free practice sessions but then went to pieces during quali and didn't make it in to Q2.

I felt for Lando though. Not even an out lap, hot lap and then back in again in Q2. I think we'll start seeing a lot of cars, including the front runners having to take extra power units during this season.

I don't know why they don't make the power units more affordable and then they have more of them. Also don't know why they are limited on the numbers of wet weather tyres each team gets on a wet racing weekend. I realise that they are trying to cut costs but if I'm not mistaken every team has used their wet weather allocation for the weekend by this point, right?

MadameMinimes · 19/06/2022 12:09

The Astons’ sudden lack of pace was very strange. They were so strong in FP3 that it looked like they might be in the mix for the front couple of rows. To not get out of Q1 after such a strong practice session was very strange.

The race today is going to be interesting as there are a lot of cars out of position. You’d expect Checo and Charles to both carve their way through the field pretty quickly. I’d also expect George, Seb, Lando and Lance to make up a few places, as it feels like they are all slightly out of position too.

ListenLinda · 19/06/2022 13:02

Placemarking and glad to have found this thread!

Lewis all the way here but like to see Leclerc do well as he is a cutie. Not a fan of Verstappen, far to whiney

glad to see Lewis get P4. Think Red Bull are going to walk the championship this year by the looks.

Looking forward to the race

LookItsMeAgain · 19/06/2022 14:54

Unfortunately you might be right there @ListenLinda about it being RB's year but I think if Mercedes can manage to get on top of their issues in 2022, they will be back, stronger than ever for 2023 and Lewis might just get his 8th title. I think they need to focus now on next year's car already (such a pity though as I was hoping that they would wipe the smug smile off both Christian Horner and Max Verstappen's faces after they were gifted the title in Abu Dhabi in 2021 thanks to some very dubious decisions by the FIA and the then-Race Director).

Anyway, I'm really pleased so many other teams are doing really well and mixing things up. It's been ages since we've had more than 1 or 2 teams in the mix for either championship.

LookItsMeAgain · 19/06/2022 14:55

Also, I'm loving the fact that George Russell is driving his arse off and out-qualifying Lewis. Just brilliant stuff to watch.

Rowgtfc72 · 19/06/2022 15:17

If you look at the standings I think red bull are only up there because Mercedes have a crap car this year. Or power unit ( mcclaren are struggling too) and the ferraris are having lots of technical issues. I don't think they're there on merit.
Not that they do anything on merit- I'm not a Verstappen or Horner fan.
Nice to see alonso do well. I wouldn't rule him out for a podium finish if he gets out clean from the first corner.
Lando fan here. Follow btcc and used to watch him race in the kiddy cars!

ListenLinda · 19/06/2022 17:21

@LookItsMeAgain i’m hoping so, I have to turn it off or the sound down whenever Horner comes on.

Why is he the only team principal to ever speak during racing etc? Is it because they are reigning champs?

Was nice to see Alonso on the front row, hoping that this weekend will throw some nice surprises up.
