F1 2022 Discussion Thread

GrandSlamFinale · 22/05/2022 10:52

After many weeks and months of waiting, we finally have an F1 discussion thread on MN!

Anyone who wants to join is welcome - regardless of how long you've been watching the sport or who you support. My only request is that we keep it respectful even when criticising our favourite driver's rivals.

We're in Barcelona this weekend for round 6 of what has been a thriller of a championship so far. I'm really excited to see how the race unfolds today, if overtaking will prove as difficult as it historically has here, if the Mercs have done a step forward in race pace, how RB and Ferrari will play around with strategy and tyres.

First pole for Haas and K Mag. Lovely, I love it when backmarkers have a result like that!

Suspect Verstappen will be leading by the end of lap one of the sprint though.

GrouchyKiwi · 11/11/2022 21:16

That's great for KMag!

Princessglittery · 11/11/2022 22:49

So pleased for K Mag and Haas

Delighted for KMag but shame it's a sprint weekend so he won't start the race from pole.

Princessglittery · 12/11/2022 12:27

I think K Mag will get the cute mini tyre they sign as a nice reminder.

Bumzoo · 12/11/2022 14:52

Loving this. K mag was so happy and everyone seemed delighted for him

I loved seeing his reaction and how happy he was. Also his team all congratulating each other and him.

The crowd also gave him such a great reaction

Well that was exciting! I'm not a fan of sprint races but that's two years in a row that Interlagos has had a very entertaining race.

Wonderful win for George and I was happy to see K Mag leading for a couple of laps and staying in the points.

It certainly was! Enjoyable, especially after the boring race in Mexico!

Voice0fReason · 12/11/2022 22:54

I'm hoping the race lives up to the quali & sprint!
Great to see K-Mag leading for a couple of laps, I didn't think he'd still be leading at the first corner.
And fantastic wheel to wheel racing. Nice win from George. Hoping Mercedes have a good day tomorrow.

Rowgtfc72 · 13/11/2022 09:21

Looking forward to a good race today. Dh reckons the mercs will take each other out on the first lap.

Fingers crossed!

Rowgtfc72 · 13/11/2022 09:39

If they took Verstappen with them as well would make for a great race!
Alonso first I reckon.

As long as Russels out I’ll be happy. A mclaren podium would be ace.

Rowgtfc72 · 13/11/2022 10:11

Yeah Russell's got a bit smug at Mercedes. Great team but not, the drivers are undoubtedly good but I've never warmed to the Mercs.
Mclaren for me ( lando fan).
Would love to see them do well but the cars this season just don't have it unfortunately. The Alpines and Ferraris will be ahead even if you take out Red Bull and Mercedes.
And I'd love KMag on the podium.

ChecoPerez · 13/11/2022 12:18

Agree, Russell has got too smug which is a shame as I liked him. He has the hunger to do well, but yesterday as soon as he got into 2nd behind Max, it was straight onto the track limits which just comes across as whiney.

I'd love to see a mclaren podium today! But obvs I want my fave Perez there too.

MadameMinimes · 13/11/2022 12:58

The track limits thing is totally normal for all F1 drivers. They wouldn’t be doing their job if they didn’t pass that information back to their pit wall. Mercedes are 40 points away from taking second place in the constructors’ championship. Of course they are going to report breaches of track limits, just like Red Bull reported them to the FIA last year when the championship was so tight for a suspicion about Hamilton’s DRS slot. That’s just the way the sport works. Every point counts and could be the difference of several million pounds in prize money. It’s not “whinging”, it’s just how you have to play the game. All of the teams and drivers do it.

StarCourt · 13/11/2022 13:13

has Alonso got pyromaniac tendencies ?

This made me laugh! I can't see the pic but guessing it's of Ocon's car. Could just picture Alonso toasting some marshmallows over it, he'd have a grin on his face for sure!

Spot on. Don't get what fans are whinging about over the last few races with Lewis and George calling put track limits. All the drivers do it. Go back to the closing stages of 2021 and Max was at it non stop. It's how the game is played.

More fans need to understand the rules and be a fan of F1, rather than just a fan of an individual driver. It's making the sport poisonous.

StarCourt · 13/11/2022 13:41

@MonsteraCheese correct!

ChecoPerez · 13/11/2022 13:57

@MonsteraCheese you are right and I suppose it's the selective showing of what's being said on the radios, but it does come across as they are moaning as they seem to fixate on it (the production team).

You never hear latifi having a whinge! Lol

Princessglittery · 13/11/2022 14:15

@MonsteraCheese completely agree. I am an F1 fan and have been for decades. Drivers come and go, teams play tactics etc. but if you support F1 you keep on watching.

The price of tickets and how the drivers are now being treated in the paddock is ridiculous and a lot is driven by DtS. Its one of the reasons I think DtS is a poisoned chalice, because whilst it has undoubtably raised the profile of F1, particularly in the US ($$$) it has also manufactured rivalries e.g. Lando and Carlos, and created story lines whilst missing the true story (George’s heartbreaking 2021 drive in the Mercedes’).
