I like that there are multiple ways to score on floor. Gymnasts like Carey can build scores around powerful and difficult tumbling, and gymnasts like Derwael can construct a routine based on the artistic elements and good execution.

Forgive my ignorance, but why are there no Romanians in the top flight this time round? I used to love watching Lavinia Milosovic and Simona Amanar (although that was 20+ years ago!). The Romanians were the best vaulters and tumblers back then.

Just spotted this thread as it’s all over. Really pleased with the top three. Great result for GB sneaking into the top ten too.

Very happy with that podium. I would have liked to see Murakami on the podium (but I would have liked to have seen way more than three on the podium).

Romania didn't qualify a team

I think I've worked out how to differentiate between the twins — Jennifer wipes her thumb against her lower lip before she starts.

My (limited) understanding is that Romania were very strong for a number of years, but slowly started dropping off, partly due to coaches/trainers defecting to USA and other countries, partly due to the sport having a bad reputation for abuse and cruelty so parents didn't want to send their kids, and partly due to lack of investment in the sport. They hung on and by the early-mid 2000s with just enough talent, but very little depth - if anyone got injured the team would be screwed. In more recent years they haven't even been qualifying teams to team final (top 8 teams in the world). They typically always have at least one great gymnast, but not the powerhouse country they once were.

They have a beautiful all arounder, Larisa Iordache, who qualified to be in Tokyo, but very sadly she hurt her ankle in qualifying so will only appear in the beam final.
