I’m English and surrounded by people saying it's coming home. Do people actually believe it will or are they just saying it?

Also football has in one version or another has been around for 100s it years. Maybe Scocer / Assoication Football was invented in England. But not football.

SweetheartNeckline · 05/07/2018 07:59

INGERLUUUUUUND!!!

I don't think we're going to win the World Cup, but I'm enjoying the experience - the games have been on at a good time to watch with the children (which doesn't always happen) and we're doing well. My brother is in Russia so enjoying messages from him. I'm not a follower of football but nor am I a follower of gymnastics or sprinting and I really enjoy the Olympics.

You don't have to "gain" anything ffs, we all know it's a bunch of overpaid blokes chasing a ball around, but it's FUN!

Candyflip · 05/07/2018 08:00

Yes. The football that is played in the World Cup 😂. I would imagine people were kicking bladders/rocks/tumbleweed since time immemorial. But that is not the football referred to in the song is it? 😂

Candyflip · 05/07/2018 08:01

That was to somewhere.. slow typing

InfiniteVariety · 05/07/2018 11:15

Does anyone else find the BBC sports editor Dan Roan (currently reporting from Moscow on the World Cup) attractive? I've developed a bit of a crush on him . It's the way he stands at an angle and looks down the camera with a playful smile that seems to say, "don't take all this too seriously but it's fun, isn't it?"
(misses point of thread)

Lweji · 05/07/2018 11:29

It will only take three wins, so it's possible. Grin

However, Belgium and Uruguay have been very good finishers this cup. And Russia... well... there are many ways to win games without the other team throwing it. England isn't playing so well that it would require them to throw the game to lose against Russia. I expect them to do really well, one way or another.

littlemisscomper · 05/07/2018 13:33

If England do win the match on Saturday when will their next game be?

megletthesecond · 05/07/2018 13:45

little Weds at 7pm.
I have two school events that afternoon and was having a minor panic about clashes about the potential of an earlier match.

heatwave2018 · 05/07/2018 13:59

I find it hilarious that the match is on Saturday at 3pm when a lot of weddings, galas and children's events will be disrupted Grin

I'm astonished that so many people on this thread give Russia a chance of victory. You can put your money where your words are by backing them at 20/1 even now.

They would have to beat Croatia then either England or Sweden and then probably Brazil or France (and that is on the basis they will beat Belgium and Uruguay which isn't certain).

To put things into perspective if football is 'coming home' then England are 4/1 for overall victory which is a really skinny price given who we are likely to meet in the final.

heatwave2018 · 05/07/2018 15:38

Why do you think they give Russia a chance of victory? It's because they will poison the competition and cheat their way to the top. If they don’t lose soon their thugs are gonna be hell on the streets

I would be happy just to make the semi finals. It would show that England is progressing in world football. Four years from now, I would then expect it to come home.

KokoandAllBall · 05/07/2018 21:09

Football didn't begin in England or at least we don't have proof whereas China, Greece and Ancient Rome all have/had proof, but they registered the first club and have the oldest league competition, which is why we claim Britain is the founder of the modern game.

Brant2o · 06/07/2018 03:30

There's always a chance. But I think France will win the match.

MrsMint · 06/07/2018 20:16

Will the ordinary English person gain anything? I think not.

Err yes actually: "the ordinary English people" who are enjoying seeing their team do well.

dementedma · 07/07/2018 08:19

we are currently in Poland on holiday and of course, dh and ds have to watch the games! grrrrrr, I hate fucking football personally but they are hugely enjoying watching england play and it means I get to sit out in the sun and read while they squeeze round a screen with loads of other blokes of all nationalities and get noisy. Everyone over here is watching the games, there isn't a hint of bad behaviour from anyone and it is creating a feel good factor.
personally, much as I dont really give a toss, i do like Gareth Southgate. Well turned out, humble and polite. (Can you tell I am an old gimmer for whom these things matter?)

Slartybartfast · 07/07/2018 09:41

i dont think they will beat Sweden.
i think Belgium will win

Slartybartfast · 07/07/2018 09:42

i am anxious that there is so much hype that it will all come tumbling down, the disappointment. the heat, the booze.

ginandnappies · 07/07/2018 09:48

I think Belgium will take it this year. They have been playing amazing!

Misslincs · 07/07/2018 10:29

Sorry BluthsFrozenBananas but to be really pedantic, Three Lions was written in 1996 when the Euros, not the World Cup were being held in England. 30 Years before, The World Cup was held in England and we won it, followed by 30 (now 52) years of disappointment, hence the line 30 years of hurt. The Footballs Coming Home line, refers to the bog tournament being played back in the country that invented the game (or claimed to invent the game anyway!)

Anyway, we are going to win it, and if not it has been a brilliant few weeks of hope and expectation.

Misslincs · 07/07/2018 10:33

Next game will be on Wednesday at 7.00pm the semi finals, final next Sunday afternoon. I am in an organisation that organises a competition for local primary schools and the awards are on Wednesday night - we have magicians booked, buffet for the 8 finalist schools (about 8 from each attending), and we start at 6.00 - I think it may be cut short if we win this afternoon - if anyone turns up!

The80sweregreat · 07/07/2018 18:23

Its all good for the economy -

OutwiththeOutCrowd · 07/07/2018 18:55

So, it still might be coming home. But, killjoy that I am, I'm now imagining the peculiarly unique ignominy if Russia get through and whup England in the semi-finals.

ReHorsing · 08/07/2018 00:56

I'm afraid that Russia are winning it this year.

Yessssssssss

KokoandAllBall · 08/07/2018 01:55

Colombia came home to huge supportive crowds. England will have gone two rounds closer if they come home after the semi's. Those of us who are partaking, let's just enjoy it instead of wondering about who might beat us!
