Bike T minus 35 days and counting, to the Grand Depart from Leeds 5th July, with two stages in the White County, and then a third from Cambridge to the Mall in London. It's just soo exciting! It's the biggest biking event in the world, with approx 190 professional riders in about 20 teams racing across tarmac and cobbles, up mountains and down Dales and ending on 27th July on the Champs Elysee, Paris in the now traditional sprint finish there. So here's the thread to share in it all, swop info about accommodation for Tour watchers, road closures, the parcours (courses), peloton gossip, potential meet ups, tv coverage, who's got the nicest legs etc.. and everything to do with the thrills and occasional spills with the event that is a game of poker played out every day on 380 wheels. OF course if you are a newbie to all of this and are curious about the whys and hows of racing then ask and someone will pop up to answer questions. Hopefully.

So I'll depart here next with the routes of the UK 3 stages being taken so no-one gets lost and ends up in the dreaded broom wagon. Bike

We're cycling 242 miles over the next 2 days in the office in aid of charity... We do have 2 bikes to do it between though!

FelixFelix · 03/07/2014 11:47

Good luck mistle!

Otley race was good yesterday. Although one of the riders from the club DP is part of crashed in to the barrier we were stood at on one of the corners, and a poor old bloke stood next to me got injured Sad Otley is all decorated up for the tour and looks great! Only 2 more days Grin

LostInWales · 03/07/2014 14:18

Keep pedalling mistle!

Just read Matthews might be out for OGE after a training fall, I hope he's not too badly injured after all and makes it to the start.

EndoplasmicReticulum · 03/07/2014 17:00

Harrogate grinding to a halt already. I have plans to walk up to the finish tomorrow for a gawp as no chance of getting near it on Saturday. Team buses everywhere, the OG one has managed to avoid getting wedged under anything so far.

We have our plans made. They may be foolish. Travelling up from south midlands on Friday night. Staying near snaith with relatives. Going to Leeds via park and ride for the start on day 1. Back to snaith later. Day 2 heading back south via Sheffield doing park and tram to meadow hall from whatever car park is available. Do any of you with local knowledge have any wise words for me? I think we have a slim to zero chance if actually catching sight of a real cyclist racing but hauling the DCs and DH over hill and dale to a good vantage point was never going to happen.

Looks like Roman Kreuziger will be missing, bad news for Contador www1.skysports.com/cycling/news/12040/9364935/tour-de-france-roman-kreuziger-withdrawn-by-tinkoff-saxo

Bunbaker · 03/07/2014 19:06

Letsgo I think you will struggle with parking in Sheffield. Perhaps you could come off the M1 at Barnsley, park in the station and get a train to Meadowhall.

Our local market town has yellow bunting and a yellow bike in Tesco's car park.

On ITV4 right now....a little painful to watch....

ariadneoliver · 03/07/2014 19:43

It is toe curling in parts. The highlight is the Tony Martin interview, genuinely funny moment.

Glad I'm missing the shebang from the sound of it! #justgetriding Bike

This ITV4 thing is tedious but I must out myself. I'm a Tour de France addict but I rarely cycleBlush...except slowly into town. DH and I spent our honeymoon cycling between hotels in Provence (packed lunch provided, luggage moved etc) many years ago. It happened to coincide with Le Tour so each afternoon as we arrived (sweaty) at new hotel and collapsed on the bed and watched Le Tour. I've been hooked ever sinceGrin.......must go cycling properly one day.....

FelixFelix · 03/07/2014 21:34

Lapsed I don't cycle either! I started watching all the races when I met DP 6 years ago and now I'm obsessed Grin

Id absolutely love a road bike but I'm too fat and would never have time to ride it as I don't have anyone to mind DD (apart from DP but I'd not be keen on going out without him!)
