Tour de Yorkshire, Cambridge...and oh yes France as well!!

Bike T minus 35 days and counting, to the Grand Depart from Leeds 5th July, with two stages in the White County, and then a third from Cambridge to the Mall in London. It's just soo exciting! It's the biggest biking event in the world, with approx 190 professional riders in about 20 teams racing across tarmac and cobbles, up mountains and down Dales and ending on 27th July on the Champs Elysee, Paris in the now traditional sprint finish there. So here's the thread to share in it all, swop info about accommodation for Tour watchers, road closures, the parcours (courses), peloton gossip, potential meet ups, tv coverage, who's got the nicest legs etc.. and everything to do with the thrills and occasional spills with the event that is a game of poker played out every day on 380 wheels. OF course if you are a newbie to all of this and are curious about the whys and hows of racing then ask and someone will pop up to answer questions. Hopefully.

So I'll depart here next with the routes of the UK 3 stages being taken so no-one gets lost and ends up in the dreaded broom wagon. Bike

SeaShells yes, clever of Orica GE to name Simon Yates in their squad. Great PR Grin. He deserves it though.

FelixFelix · 01/07/2014 19:38

Alpaca no yellow hat unfortunately Sad she has a polka dot babygrow though!

LostInWales · 02/07/2014 08:28

I want that babies hat!

Trying to get into the tour spirit whilst sulking like an idiot that I won't get to see it myself, that will teach me for moving to Wales. I am going to wear my flat cap all weekend and keep my whippets (real ones, they are sitting on my feet as I type, I am just a walking cliche) on baler twine leads.

I love seeing all the effort people have put into welcoming the tour, the man on a horse statue in Leeds city centre who is now in yellow is making me Grin and all the WI's with their knitted jersey bunting is brilliant, god knows what they'll make of that in France!

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 02/07/2014 12:08

LostInWales - I think we will have the best seats in the house, to see the best of the Tour. Though I still wish I was going to be driving down to Yorkshire, to meet Pan and the other MN peloton members, and see the Tour go past. But the road closures in Yorkshire have made that an impossible dream for me.

mistlethrush · 02/07/2014 12:14

I'm hoping that they'll have a big screen up at the event I'm going to so we can see them go along the whole distance - but I think I might record it just in case!

DramaAlpaca · 02/07/2014 12:17

Lost & SDTG we'll be there in spirit at least, and we will see a lot more from our sofas. I so wish I could go & meet everyone as well.

Lost you have whippets!! I love whippets Smile

LostInWales · 02/07/2014 12:18

I know SDTG it would have been ace to meet up with some of the MN peloton. Some of my best friends were weirdy internet friends first Grin.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 02/07/2014 12:42

I definitely qualify as a wierdy internet person, Lost! Wierdy and proud. Grin

LostInWales · 02/07/2014 12:58

Weirdy and proud owner of whippets! I love them too Drama, they are daft and beautiful and run like nothing on earth, then come home and drape themselves elegantly over things to sleep the other 23 hours Smile.

mistlethrush · 02/07/2014 13:25

I've got a lurcher instead... similar properties, just a bit bigger and scruffier...

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 02/07/2014 13:39

We have a brown lab (beautiful bit dim) and a lab-pointer cross - well, we think that's what she is. She came from the Dogs' Trust, who had her listed as a lab cross, and we've met up with local pointer owners who are also vets, who say definitely pointer.

We are her fourth home, including the Dogs' Trust, and she has been a breeding bitch, and was then owned by a family with small children, living in a flat on the edge of Glasgow - they couldn't cope with her so handed her over to the Dogs' Trust - unsurprisingly she has ishoos. Not to put too fine a point on it, she is a neurotic bitch. But she is lovely, and wants to spend as much time as possible with us - on our laps, if possible, which is fun, as she weighs over 30kg and has bloody sharp elbows!

She is keeping me company now whilst I watch the tennis, and will be equally willing to curl up on the couch and help me watch the Tour. Very accommodating hound!

DramaAlpaca · 02/07/2014 13:57

We have two lovely & utterly daft springer spaniels Smile

FelixFelix · 02/07/2014 16:57

Is anyone in the area off to the Otley Cycle Races tonight? Going to try and get there once DP gets home from work. Hopefully won't be too busy to park at around 6ish Shock

Lost you might like this then:

Oh so excited.

Harrogate has a rumour going round that David Beckham has come to watch and went to Bettys, then ran around the Valley Gardens in his pants. Not sure this is true.

LostInWales · 02/07/2014 20:21

I do like that video, a mithered whippet is a bad thing indeed Grin. I watched that this morning and shouted downstairs 'ya reet kids' in the dulcet tones of my childhood. They were baffled!

I've just been looking through my FB feed, I'm sure I saw a picture of Christian Prudhomme with a Yorkshire terrier in a yellow jersey earlier, or am I starting to get tour based hallucinations with excitement?

SeaShellsMyDogTrulySmells · 02/07/2014 20:42

:D

I've been catching up on twitter - so exciting seeing everyone arriving :D not long now. I'm wondering if our visitors on sat would mind if I watched the live feed ;)

VivaLeBeaver · 02/07/2014 20:46

I still don't know where to go to watch it on Sunday. Maths further to sheffield the better. I'd booked a driveway but the fucker owner has just cancelled my booking citing road closure.

He lives over a mile from the route. Will there really be that many road closures?

EndoplasmicReticulum · 02/07/2014 21:16

Road closures - in Harrogate the answer is yes, there really will be that many. And for a very long time too.
I'm glad we're not trying to go anywhere!

Panwearsjaune · 02/07/2014 21:26

Road closures round here are ridiculous. IF you still want to make it over to Glossop for the Holme Moss descent and turn at the reservoir, let me know?

Other option I've looked at now is parking at Low Bradford and walking to high Bradford??

VivaLeBeaver · 02/07/2014 21:59

Bradfield even.

EndoplasmicReticulum · 02/07/2014 22:04

Just seen this on BBC News:

VivaLeBeaver · 02/07/2014 22:45

Orica are my fave teAm. Sad

They e got Simon Yates (a Brit) riding for them.

EndoplasmicReticulum · 02/07/2014 22:54

They've also announced a Tour of Yorkshire to happen (every year? maybe?) next May - a three day race - going to go to different places from the Tour de France as there's a lot of Yorkshire still to cover. Whitby, Scarborough and the coast would be great.
