Almost here....how's the training regime going?

The first of the three Grand Tours, Tour of Italy, departs from Belfast with a team time trial from the Titanic shipyard, before a second day riding round the North, and then a third day from Armagh to Dublin centre, and then a flight to southern Italy and few weeks easy riding up through central Italian Apennines, over the Dolomites and a cruise through to Trieste on the Adriatic coast. No problems then...

Some useful links?

Overall route and maps

The understandably excited local Belfast press

and a bit more general fuss

Most of the usual pro-cycling suspects will be competing, and returning for the Tour de France Yorkshire in July.

Before all of this though there's a few 'classic' races to be had, but we can put those to another thread? Nothing else should get in the way of 3 days of professional racing in the Irish sunshine.

Watched a wee bit of giro yesterday at ddads( he with every single sports channel on the planet- Japanese darts anyone)
Teas wet and everyone looked tired I thought. How on earth do they keep going...

Panwearsrosa · 15/05/2014 18:45

Lost - may I heavily revise my rather charmless birthday greeting from this morning??BlushBike

Shakespeare said it much better than me!

Hope you are having a fab day, and Barcelona/Girona(?) is memorable.Bike

EndoplasmicReticulum · 15/05/2014 22:02

Big crash today, looked very scary bikes everywhere.

ariadneoliver · 15/05/2014 22:14

It was carnage. Rodriguez (fractured rib and thumb) , Caruso and Vicioso (broken leg) all out.

DramaAlpaca · 15/05/2014 22:22

About 40 members of the peloton went down. It was horrible to watch. It has completely shaken up the GC.

LostInWales · 15/05/2014 22:59

NO, sod birthdays

Panwearsrosa · 15/05/2014 23:30

just seeing the highlights now. Hate to see accidents.

Panwearsrosa · 16/05/2014 00:45

Just awful. So when you see Premiership footballers writhing around on a grass surface 'in agony'...Bike

cremolafoam · 16/05/2014 12:26

Oh my yesterday was catastrophic- that crash- the injuries- Rodrigez's face. Sad Wretched .

Panwearsrosa · 16/05/2014 22:38

Shall we start a TdF thread this weekend? People will be wanting to make plans, as I am! Any ideas for the OP at all?

DramaAlpaca · 16/05/2014 22:46

Go right ahead, Pan.

No particular ideas for the OP, but I'm sure you'll come up with something in your own, inimitable style. Looking forward to checking out your links Smile

Panwearsrosa · 16/05/2014 22:53

Yes, DA, it's the links I'm wanting to get right. Also, I was thinking (whilst riding home this evening in glorious sunshine in the Peaks - it's breath-taking!) was about how to do a brief, accessible guide for folk who have little idea about pro-cycling to understand what is actually going on, when the tv shots just show a bunch of riders cruising along. Will have a thunk.Bike

cremolafoam · 16/05/2014 22:57

Pan that sounds terrific. Allons-y!

DramaAlpaca · 16/05/2014 22:59

EndoplasmicReticulum · 17/05/2014 15:48

Lovely day here in the dales today and the roads are clogged with cyclists. Yellow bikes stuck to houses everywhere.

ariadneoliver · 17/05/2014 16:16

Very exciting stage today. Nip and tuck to the end, worth catching the highlights if you missed it live. Bike

Panwearsrosa · 17/05/2014 16:35

Saw bits of it, in and out from the garden. Classic tour mountain stage. Bike

EndoplasmicReticulum · 17/05/2014 17:45

Can't see it live or highlights! Have been watching bits on YouTube to keep up, cycling hub have the last 15 mins of each stage.

DramaAlpaca · 17/05/2014 19:21

That was an exciting stage. Good to see blue skies & sunshine for a change too.

Bike
DramaAlpaca · 18/05/2014 22:28

Another exciting stage. OGE are having a great Giro.

Nice to see Wiggo winning the Tour of California, and Cav beating Sagan again Smile

Finally finished reading Nico Roche's biography. He comes across as a nice guy who copes well with the inevitable comparisons with his dad. Unfortunately the book finishes before his move from AG2R to Tinkoff-Saxo. I'd like to have read what he has to say about that. He writes a daily column in the Irish Independent during the Giro (and also the TdF), and it's an interesting summary of the day's events.

Next cycling biography to be tacked is David Millar's. The rate I'm going with books at the moment it'll be September before I've finished it. I spend too much time on here & don't have enough time for reading Blush

Panwearsrosa · 18/05/2014 23:08

The OGE boys are really getting into it aren't they?Bike

And yes big hat to Cav for dealing with the course and having his team mates getting him back into the bunch. It's been a fight between Giro and Cali in the past few days!
