Little stat for you.

This is BEFORE Jess Ennis has gone, so in a few mins this may have changed slightly, but its still interesting.

The USA and China have more golds than us. They also have more people.

Its currently working out at

USA
24 Golds
Population 314,000,000
Which equals 76 Gold medals per billion people.

China
23 Golds

Population 1,300,000,000
Which equals 18 Gold per billion people.

GB
11 Golds
Population 62,000,000
Which equals 177 Gold per billion

This makes us currently 10 times more successful than China and twice as successful than the US.

The Aussies can no longer say we only do well at the "sitting down" sports!

Mo Farah Gold in 10k. This is a good nightGrin

HmmThinkingAboutIt · 04/08/2012 22:00

belgianbun we are already ahead of Beijing at the same point.

We got 47 medals overall there. And 17 of those were gold.

We are up to 14 Gold already!!!
Overall we have 28 so far. So 20 to go. Its very doable. I'd be more surprised if we didn't beat Beijing's gold count. And we have medals in 11 sports already (if you count the tennis) - so just one more sport to get and sailing is looking very good for another.

We have good chances left in:
About 5 sailing classes
2 tennis (medals actually confirmed)
Possibles in individual gymnastics
Both individual and team dressage (and I think Show Jumping)
More to come in cycling
Mo Farah is in the 5km
Relays! (If we can get the baton round!)
Diving
Triathlon
And I've not even looked at how we are progressing in the team sports or the boxing!

scaevola · 04/08/2012 22:06

Lets not count our tennis chickens until they are hatched, no matter how unlikely a disqualification seems at this stage.

But three golds tonight - one after the other like that - amazing!

FrankelSaysRelax the Aussies can't say much at all about these Olympics. They are having a total nightmare by their own standards. Only 1 gold so far. They have got 20 medals over all but they just don't seem to be able to get those golds. In Beijing they got 14 gold. I dread to think what the newspapers are like over there.

FrankelSaysRelax · 04/08/2012 22:28

Oh I know Hmm, there will be some "interesting" discussions going on down under.

[contemplates emailing Sydney based cousin to wind her up a bit] Wink

Apparently we're doing well in the boxing, with 4 men through to their respective quarter-finals and more still to fight.

We've got another medal, silver in sailing as far as I can tell (app not very forthcoming)

HmmThinkingAboutIt · 05/08/2012 14:03

It is a silver - Men's Star. We were hoping for Gold as we were leading coming into the last race, but they had a terrible last race and Swedes nicked the Gold.

IOutrunBoltInMySpareTime · 05/08/2012 14:35

Gold in men's Finn , Ben Ainslie.

AWimbaWay · 05/08/2012 14:44

Following on from Hmmthinkingaboutit's post, this link shows medal tally by population, quite interesting.

EdithWeston · 05/08/2012 14:54

If you look at my post (above) of Wed 01-Aug-12 at 21:23:29, you'll see that an interactive Alternative medals table (which let's you "score" not just for population, but also against freedom indices, debt levels and CO2 emissions levels).

IOutrunBoltInMySpareTime · 05/08/2012 16:11

Silver on pommel horse, was very very close though.
