Bruising after surgery

Had a laparoscopic surgery a few days ago and when I took the dressing off this is what the bruising was like.
Anyone know why there were lines like that?

Disclaimer - I am not a doctor/nurse!

It looks like something has been causing pressure between those lines - like the lines you get above your ankles from wearing tight socks - and it's caused the blood to congregate in those lines rather than spreading out across the whole wound area.

It looks like the actual incision is scabbing over nicely. Now the dressing is off the bruise might spread out a bit.

If it's more painful than you expect or shows any signs of infection such as swelling, feeling hot or discharge, get onto the doctor ASAP.

Wishing you a fast recovery!

Bruising after surgery is pretty normal I think. This is when I had my knee replaced!

Oh yes bruised all over now, know that's normal, it was the lines that I was curious about😊
Nothing has been pressing against the area.

The stitches?

TurquoiseJasper · 12/04/2026 00:05

I've since discovered something else........ There is a very strange rather big lump near my rib, we are jokingly saying something has been left in there but it's very strange and quite sore.....

There are some retractors which are slotted like a fork so the lines might be where each ‘tine’ was touching you.

Keep an eye on that… 50 years ago my dad had an op on his toe, and it wouldn’t heal. It swelled and pus oozed, and he was feeling pressure so squeezed it and out popped a plastic needle cover!

😱😱 There is no pus,I don't think it's a haematoma, it hurts when I breathe in, almost feels like a hard pointy pebble 🤣

That must have been an amazing moment, what a memory to treasure.

I hope that things have improved in surgery! mainly single-use items and counting before and after surgery. A lot of people had oddments left inside maybe that would make an interesting thread

Oh, that doesn’t look quite right, does it? Do you get a post-surgical checkup at any point? If not I’d call your gp surgery and see if the nurse can have a look for you.

DraftLovely · 12/04/2026 17:43

You need to call the ward and go back in. They need to check you properly. Take an overnight bag.

FoolOfShips · 12/04/2026 18:41

I think you should get that lump checked out - could be pus.

Mischance · 12/04/2026 18:57

When I had a cardiac stent they went in through an artery in my wrist. My whole arm was blue from shoulder to hand. My GC were very impressed!

TurquoiseJasper · 13/04/2026 00:31

Thanks folks, went to our of hours GP who said it was an infected stitch un prescribed me antibiotics - the thing is I don't agree 🤣
I don't feel there is an infection...... It's not red, the stitch looks okay, I will phone the consultants secretary tomorrow morning and pas on my concerns, hopefully somebody will get back to me.

Send them the photo as well, a couple from different angles if possible and definitely something to give a sense of the size (eg a 50p piece). Bit odd so your consultant will want to see. Good luck with recovery :)

I always take Arnica after laparoscopic ops, clears the buses so much faster, these are my bruises 48 hours after having my gallbladder removed.

butidid · 17/04/2026 08:44

Did you have dissolvable sutures? Lines could be from that maybe?
