Anyone want to join me on a starting school ramble?

DS1 (4.9 dx ASD) is starting (mainstream primary) school in September. He has a statement (though I'm not entirely convinced it is any good but IPSEA and others have told me I will lose at tribunal so not pursing it). He's been for a couple of taster sessions and enjoyed it but is refusing to even try the school uniform on and is adamant he won't be wearing it. As he has been so good on the settling sessions the class teacher doesn't think he has any difficulties . She is in for a shock!

That's us - what about you and yours

Any of the DC started school yet? how is it going?

DS1 started school on Monday (part time). He was mostly fine about going in (though got a bit distressed we were going the wrong way as we'd previously gone through school office rather than the gate). The TA collected him and he went off o.k. When I collected him TA said he'd done really well. Tuesday he was not happy about going to school said it was "scary, smelly and boring", didn't want the school top on etc etc etc. Didn't cry but I had to push him through the gate to the TA (parents' not allowed in). DS2 cheered me up no end by saying "poor [ds1 name], he is really sad and upset" me: "oh he will be fine" DS2: "no he really won't be, he is very sad." Came out with a "great" sticker assume was o.k nothing said.
Bit better at drop off this morning but still unhappy about school top and going to school in general(though weirdly everything else about uniform he likes even thoughg I couldn't get him near it previously). next week he is supposed to stay and have lunch then for me to collect him but will wait and see what they say.

DD started last thursday! :)

Im still worried about MS but she is fine! Loves it! We started a communication diary so I dont have to stay behind every day to talk to teachers and can explain her sometimes strange language!....the classroom is now called 'the carebear room'...her version of 'the catterpillar room' in Toy Story 3...also still known as 'The bowels of big school!' Shes eating ALL her school dinner...well apart from the bits on her jumper, playing alongside other DCs and noy just staying on one activity. Had an accident yesterday...distracted by puzzels but we have spare uniform in her PE bag.

To update got initial DX ASD, language problems but going back on 17th for further tests.

Hope its going well for everyone else. :)

dd3 started last thursday too! First morning was a complete disaster, seriously considered removing her, she fell asleep, threw up and tripped and bumped her head. I was seriously worried about the state they had let her get into. However it has been better since Smile she already has a much better relationship with her new 1:1 than she did with her old one after the end of nursery year Hmm she's definitely more stressed than over the holidays and I still remain to be convinced ms base is the right place for her but only time will tell.

good to hear how everyone's doing, sounds a pretty positive start for the most part Smile

Woolytree - yay for things going so well. Sounds like the school is really switched on and supportive. I found the time after dx a bit up and down, how are your feeling? Hope the meeting goes well on the 17th.

bdaonion - glad your DD has settled in well. kwym about the blessing/curse of gradual start. DS1 could go full days and I did mention to the TA at pick up about maybe starting him fulltime next week rather than picking him after lunch as was original plan. Need to speak to the class teacher about it (she is a bit scary tbh!).

bigcar - argh nightmare first day - so glad things have improved and your dd3 has a good relationship with her 1:1 already. I am still a bit undecided about whether DS1 is in the right school but like you say time will tell.

Polareyes, thanks. I am a bit up and down...occasional denial, I think seeing the full report will help me face up to things.

Big challenges ahead, DH is trying to get a job with better, more sociable hours, hopefully start SALT and face the mountains of paperwork and battles for support!

Good luck to all...I hopes all the DCs settle in soon. :)

DS2 started on Monday, but it was just business as usual, since reception did half days for the first 3 days.

This is my first afternoon without home and I'm a bit, well .

I'm off to bake a cake with some of the apples off my parents' tree and take comfort that I get the bowl lickings all to myself!! :o
