Calling all mum's of dcs with AS / HFA come and say Hi!

Just thought would be nice to see how many of us there are and get to know each other a litle?

DS is 4, 5 in Oct, and as yet still not dx'd (waiting for EdPysch then will go to panel). He is very much an aspie, we have had verbal confirmation from Paediatrician that he is on the spectrum, and is very quirky and cute! He likes Doctor Who, Thomas, and WallE. He does not like toilets, loud noises or changes.

Anyone else about?

Yoo-hoo!

My ds is 10 with AS, now home educated after being failed by two 'excellent' schools . We love it!

When calm and having his needs met you wouldn't know he had any problems, but if left to his own devices he can blow in an instant. He's learning a lot about self control and getting better at it.

Interests: Star Wars, Harry Potter, Dr Who, Lego Bionicles and chocolate.

Hiya

I have an 8 year old dd with AS.
She has a lot of sensory issues and is very 'eccentric' and struggles with anxiety.

She loves collecting and reading catalogues, then boring entertaining us with what she's learned!

Hello

I'm Peachy and I have 4 boys, ds1 has AS / HFA as a diagnosis (as far as I can wotrk out coz SALT wouldn't finish his assessment!) and ds3 is classed as HFA I beleive although all his DX notes state autism as taht's how he functions, regardless of actual potential IYSWIM. He ahs severe verbal and emerging attention issues.

DS1 is 9 and attends MS with a statement, aggression is his main thing, without that he would be an achiever albeit one with an eating disorder. DS3 attends an SNU that is fab and turned 6 last week.

Also have ds2, 8 and possibly with dyspraxic issues, and ds4, 15 months.

Obsessions: ds3 computer games (more watching them than actual playing- bit hard to explain). DS1- chicken, top gear, fighting.

So sorry, I posted and then stumbled across shiney's embarrassing moments thread in MN classics, which I read looking like this !

Streakybacon, nice to hear homeschooling is going well for you, it is something I may consider come September when DS will be in a full class of children 9-3 with no statement or support. I know it is an obvious qestion but how do you manage the social aspect of it?

Hi, My DS is 4 and probably HFA, but was diagnosed with childhood autism. He likes Thomas, Dora the explorer, Barney and very much into music at the moment. His skills are very imbalanced, he is very good at academics, but socially very behind. For example, although he can complete a jigsaw for 7-8 years old, he does not get simple things like when somebody says bye, he repeats his name. He does not have any obsessions and does not have any sensory issues, it's mainly language, but his receptive language on par with his peers, it's the expressive language that he can't do.

Hi

DS2 is 8, he attends a speech and language unit attached to mainstream school which he loves.

His specialist subjects are cars and dinosaurs, particularly dinosaurs. He loves his DS games, especially Mario.

He is very quirky, funny and generous (unless very tired!)

Oh, and also have adhd assessment this thursday!

Hi,
DS1 is 7 and has AS.
He struggles academically and socially, but he tries very hard.He is anxious a lot of the time.
He loves swimming (5 strokes so far) and is now at the pool for the 2nd time today with his dad. He also loves Peppa Pig and his new bunk bed.
He doesn't like hand driers, being told what to do by his mother or any of his many routines to change ever!

Hi everyone,

My DS is 5, DX with AS in March.

Not sure how to describe him in a short and succinct way.

Can be incredibly loving and sweet, is very bright and we have loads of fun times.

He chats constantly, has endless energy, likes to be in charge and do things on his terms, has his routines and obsessions.

His AS behaviour becomes much more extreme when stressed and anxious.

Typing this one handed as I hold a hula hoop up in the air for DS (who is pretending to be a dog) to jump through

hi ds 7 AS DX last year

Lively constantly talks.
Whizz at maths and on computer,playing on the wii, on the computer and ds - hates writing and drawing.

hates change, loves routine, not keen on loud noises,as big phobias bees and wasps, dressing up, getting dirty hands.

loves to win is always right ,likes to be in charge and do things on his terms,

His AS behaviour becomes much more extreme when stressed and anxious.

but a very loving but in your face type!

must admit coped and pasted what ds does !

Wow thanks everyone for all these replies, seems there are quite a few of us. It's nice to read everyone's short descriptions of their dcs. I know my DS is such a character he is hard to sum up in a few sentences as I'm sure yours are too!

Peachy just to say - wasn't ignoring you earlier, I loaded page to post, DS came along, 5 mins later I posted without redreshing screen (duh), and you were there!

I have found MN so helpful in terms of helping me become (or at least start to become) a strong advocate for DS, and to help me with things like DLA, and just the emotions of it all. I find life with DS like an emotional rollercoaster sometimes and find it hard to find parents who 'get it' in RL. That's why I thought I would do a shout out.

Hello.

Ds1 (9) has HFA. He loves anything science-related and currently has an obsession with Pokemon. He hates football and most sports.

Ds2 (6) has AS and is usually described as "unique" or "a character". He loves art and science. He dislikes anything that involves sitting still for too long.

Hi

DS will be 4 in november, we have had verbal dx of mild asd from paed last april.

He has SLI, and a few quirky behaviours, he is very much into vehicles ...cars, trains, motorbikes, rescue services ones,...also the ice cream van (but not for the ice cream! ).

We are still at the begining of the longggg , slowww process of a formal dx. Waiting on ed.phy, and 2nd visit with paed next week.

DS2 has a diagnosis of AS. I think its more HFA myself, but whatever - its one of those things .
He's 5. Has just started at MS school and its going ok. He's very language delayed and his ASD traits come out when stressed/or changing routines.
Also very loveable, funny, mischeivous, stubborn...
Loves dinosaurs.

Hi my DS is five and has a DX of AS (after a long battle), a huge relief to me as I have suspected for a long while. He is funny and can be sooooo sweet unless he is stressed or tired. likes to be in control at the moment likes to control what every family member wears!! Is a very fussy eater which is one of our major stresses. Is is reported to be doing well in school but we do some fallout at home. Loves his baby sister to death but can also be a bit rough with her and a bit green eyed about the attention she naturally demands as a 10 month old. Have to say though he would not be the boy he is without AS (I don't think?) and we are enjoying our rollercoaster ride with him. Anyone is Oxfordshire??

Ds, 5, had verbal dx of HFA recently, but I'm still not sure. He's definitely a character though (as his school keep telling me), and very quirky. His hobbies are mainly licking things, and anything about Afghanistan. He also seems to need very little sleep.

Have 3rd paed appt on Friday, and I'm dreading it!

Hi I have Jack 14 with moderate autism who gives fantastic monologues on the football league,non league, home and abroad etc etc you get my drift oh and Formula 1. He dislikes food, sleeping, noise and other people.
Then I have Lucy 6 with a diagnosis of moderate to severe autism but who after 30 plus hours of intervention a week functions as HFA. She likes talking, singing, talking and more talking as well as the Mario Brothers and nintendogs.

Morning! Nice to see even more of us!

My DS seems to need much less sleep than an NT child, and also has much shorter sleep cycles so wakes up a lot during night. Usually bouncing on me and making robots noises or reciting the words from WallE

Afghanistan othermother? Wow!

My DS likes licking things too but it is one like I won't humour (as he usually liked to lick me!) so he knows to resist that one.

I did chuckle asdx2 at "talking, singing, talking and more talking"

Those of you whose dcs have a nintendo DS, do they find it easy to use? I ask as am thinking of getting one for ds for xmas.

Well I am rationing the TV at the moment chez sammy - DS was getting far too reliant and possessive over it. Even telling daddy to go to work in the hope he could watch more. I could happily live without a TV ayway so am quite relieved to be doing it! DS not taking it too badly...

Hi Everyone,

DS1 is 6 with HFA. He is a delightful happy little chappy and is currently obsessed with White Lions after a trip to the West Midlands Safari Park. He finds schoool very challenging at times but with appropriate support he is really blossoming

SammyK - DS has a nintendo DS, but he has a lot of difficulty using it unsupervised, except for very simple games (I Did It Mum. I usually have to play it with him.

I didn't know there were so many of us!

My ds is 9 yrs and attends a language unit alongside a mainstream school.

He hates school and works himself up into a right state about it, so we are both really enjoying our summer hols at the mo, although I'm already running out of things to do. If ds had it his way, he would be stuck in front of the computer 24/7, he amazes me with how much he knows, he has blogs dotted all over the place, and yet hates to do literacy at school!

He is pokemon mad, and what he doesn't know is not worth finding out. Mind you, I'm learning more than I care to, he immerses himself in 'pokemon world' constantly regardless of where we are or what we're doing.

He has his difficulties and can be challenging but he's great and unique and makes me smile so much.
