So what do you do besides parent your SN child?

I just thought of starting this thread to tell you a little about me besides my ranting & stress on here, and learn a little about you too.

Thought it would be nice to say stuff about my life besides the saga of getting DS help.

So... I have 10 animals. I have 4 degus, 4 rabbits, 2 cats. They are all stupidly well looked after and any info you need about degus or rabbits come my way! I am an avid reader, I read shitloads of history books. Really I read aristocratic women's history books, fiction & non fiction. I have a very strong obsession with many of these women. DH tells me I should replace the word "very" with "fucking" but I think that is a bit too crass in this instance.

I love Star Trek. I have seen every single ST episode except the shitty one with Scott Backula. And I just recently decided that I am going to become an amateur specialist orchid grower. I only have one very interesting orchid right now but I plan on adding to it soon. I do loads of art & crafts with DS and on my own, I even had a series of paintings for sale in an art gallery before xmas but none sold. (poo)

It is a proven fact that on my Dad's side of the family Alexander Selkirk who Robinson Crusoe was based on is my ancestor. I also have ancestors I think I know of but wont mention as I will look like a loon! LOL I love Vienna. And on that note I shall fuck right off as they say here on MN as you are all probably bored to tears.

But please do tell me about yourselves! I really want to know!

We have 2 cats and 2 hens. I work part time in a hospital. I love reading and have just finished 'the girl on the landing'. I volunteer for a charity called the cinnamon trust and walk 2 beautiful lurchers 3/4 times a week. They satisfy my dog craving until younger daughter is older and we can talk my husband round! I love chocolate, white wine and crap telly.

silverfrog · 04/03/2009 13:22

HIDTL - it was an absolute necessity, believe me . She was insiting on taking the full size, hardback version with her everywhere, and it was getting to be a huge problem, as she couldn't hold it easily and walk - end result, lots of meltdowns wehn we tried to help her re-position it, as she thought we were trying to take it away (an issue we are currently having with dd2 and her fav teddy - which is nearly the same size as she is )

so, as a laminate obsessive, it was the obvious answer

we do it now for loads of her books - easier to take on car/plane journeys, and added bonus of being wipe clean

ChopsTheDuck · 04/03/2009 13:26

ooh all these law types! I'm in my final year of an OU law degree. Outcome should be a 2:2 so god knows what I'm going to do with it even if I am ever in the position of being able to work.

I also parent 3 year old twins and an 8 year old wannabe teenager. Sometimes sn aren't my hardest challenge!

I love to cook, and explore foods from different cultures. I drink too much wine, and love exploring new places. I get bored very easily. I also like to read, now reading the kite runner.

I keep fish as they are the only pet that can look after themselves for a fortnight while we go on holiday. We keep oscar fish, which are like little puppies in a tank.

I wouldn't know one end of a laminator from the other!

kettlechip · 04/03/2009 14:32

I live down in the West Country (but am from up North originally), and could see the sea if I stood on our roof! We have no pets, DH works away during the week so caring for a 3 and a 1 yr old is hard enough for me!

My real passions are reading, travel and shopping (mainly online given where we live) for clothes, art and things for our home. Would love to be a travel writer, interior designer or SALT! I'm a member of two book groups, a theatre going group (saw Witches of Eastwick last night with Marti Pellow in - fab) and do some preschool committee stuff.

Brioche - I love number plates too - can remember the plates of every car my parents have had since I was 5 , but scored a measly 8 on that autism test..

TotalChaos · 04/03/2009 14:34

whereas I am completely uninterested in numbers, but scored 27 on that AQ test..... am socially useless and like peace and quiet but got a completely unsystematic brain LOL

StillUnderThirthy · 04/03/2009 15:02

Hi a bit new on this forum, but here it goes:

I'm a married working mother of a 20 months old dd, working as an admin. It's the end of winter here in Canada so to avoid going out I read a lot...just started the fourth Twilight book (yes it's for teenage girls but...) Other than that I do Pilates once a week, and try to see my friends once in a while. We bought a "cottage" last year so in we spend our week-ends and summer vacation there.
Another hobby I have these days is trying to convince dh to have another bb...

Marne · 04/03/2009 15:07

I scored 27 on the AQ test too. i can remember most peoples number plates apart from my own .

madmouse · 04/03/2009 17:38

I just scored 17 (average for control group)

no excuse for the map thing then lol

mm22bys · 04/03/2009 18:03

I love travelling, and I love bookshops, I can spend hours (ok till DS2 wakes up, as soon as we go into one he starts crying!), I love coffee shops, but only when DS2 is asleep.

I am addicted to the internet.

I went to the wedding of one of bestest friends, who is French, in Champagne a few years ago and now love Champagne (and champagne loves me :-) )

I am learning how to cook fish, and would love to learn another language, I studied French and Japanese at school and tried Spanish a few years ago but all that came out was my school-girl French.

My two most favourite places in the world are London and Paris.

In 23 days I am moving back to Australia, for DS2's therapy.

(this is kind of like the 25 things about me on FB!)

mm22bys · 04/03/2009 18:17

I just got 21 in the AQ test.

5inthebed · 04/03/2009 18:21

I too am a licence plate lover. I love making sums out of the numbers and anograms out of the letters, although the newer number plates with just 2 numbers in are slightly boring

If I'm not looking after my SN child, I am looking after my 14 week old. He is yummy, has legs that love to be squeezed and HAIR! My first 2 didn't have any hair til they were 18 months + so I am so pleased about the hair!

I used to work for a bank until last year when I was made redundant. Decided I'd not go back to work, as was pregnant at the time anyway so now a trainee domestic goddess (hate the term SAHM). Getting ever so good at cooking things from scratch.

I also have a guinea pig, who is like a walking wig . At the moment she looks a bit like Rod Stewart as I've just cut her fringe so she can see where she is going.

Oh, and I'm a secret pram hun although wouldn't go as far as getting a new one every week.

hereidrawtheline · 04/03/2009 18:31

LOL at your guinea being able to see where she is going!

StillUnder30 welcome You are good doing Pilates I am really averse to any form of physical exercise. Well I like swimming but I never do it. Other than that I just walk to get from point A to point B as I dont drive but I dont actually try to work out. I went through a phase of doing these FAB youtube workouts by this really camp Christian guy called Paul Eugene - he was such a laugh I love him. But I still lost interest though we put him on to watch for the fun of it and DS does the routines!

I am a vegetarian. Nothing with eyes or a heartbeat. Except potatoes they have eyes.

I love travelling and shopping too!!! REALLY love shopping. And adore bookshops but rarely get time to browse in them these days.

Can someone please give me a link for this ASD test you are all going on about? You have made me curious!

2 asd boys for me.

I love maps and have a road map of the USA for home education strewing purposes, and because I wanted to look at it.

I'd love a laminator! I like modern art, photography, cutting and sticking, art therapy type activities. Also outdoor flower arrangements, dancing, reading loads, always have fines at the library.

Meditation, peace and quiet, parties. Maths, board games, gardening, but not on my own. Used to iron a lot including tea towels!! Actually like washing up.

tclanger what is your blog?

I dont do the number plate thing at all! I can barely remember mine!

(DH and DS are currently counting my toes which is slightly off putting)

drlove please come steam clean my existence!

I do like maps though!

And I am American. Am from St. Louis, MO. My original accent was southern. Now I have a very very very strange accent and no matter where I am or who I am with I sound foreign. But most people say its nice so its ok, though I would love to go anywhere shopping or whatever and not have to either repeat myself or change what I am saying to make myself more easily understood! I have lived in England 8 years, DH is English, DS and I have duel citizenship.

HIDTL, I used to have a very thick south african accent, but after 14 years liing up north, I have a posh geordie accent. I do prefer it though to my south african one.

Hi, I also have a 4 year old NT daughter, and I work part time for a children's charity, mainly fundraising and events. (I love it). We have an allotment, 2 rescue cats, 1 rescue rabbit. I love to read and I love to see plays.
