A bit early for x-mas but what do i buy an ASD child?

Dd2 does'nt realy play, just lines things up, does puzzles and eats evrything.

So what do i get her for x-mas?

She will be almost 3, i was thinking of getting her a wheely bug (large) as she likes ride-on toys. Can't realy think of much else.

trampoline - good for kids who like to be in constant motion. more jigsaw puzzles? does she like TV at all?

defintely a trampoline; hlitin therapists advise them too

big wheely bug sounds great, also ds1 likes kiddin k'nex (pattern creation) and ds3 jigsaws (order)

cooking set? toy kitchen?

Got a trampoline (she loves it), she would love a swing but as our garden is paved we can't get one , i buy her jigsaw puzzles at boot sales as she tends to eat the pieces

She loves peppa pig and backyardigans, we bought her a peppa pig plastic ride-on last year but she started standing on it like a skate-board.

Music blocks. We gave ds1 some when he was 1, he still plays with them now (9). I'll look for a link.

does she play computer games? you can get puzzl;e types; ds3 loves the ones on cbeebies

She dos'nt show much interest in the pc apart from tapping the keys when im typing. The music blocks look good, she's loves music and dancing to music.

fwiw I'd go into a toy shop and see what she goes for. My ASD son (now 11) never played with the stuff we got him (didn't get dx until 6) and we learnt to only get him things he asked for. Your daughter is probably still to young to do this, so allowing her to try out stuff might help decide what she'd like? If she likes to line things up I'd certainly buy a few sets of things she can line up, doesn't even have to be a 'toy' so long as it's still safe . Also, does she have any obsessions (like Thomas or the Teletubbies) as these can also give ideas, but again see if she likes to play with them first.

What about an indoor trampette, my ds has one and it helps to wear him out magnificently:

Im thinking maybe a trip to toys r us to see what she likes.

She likes standing books up, lining cars up and likes to scribble with crayons. Maybe an easal would be good instead of her drawing on my walls and floor

If she swings gently rather than violently, Ikea do one of those suspended chair things for I think about £25. You'd have to be able to find your ceiling joist, but if you're into swinging I imagine it would be comforting. And wouldn't take up floor space.

Ds loved his click clack track at that age. Like lining things up but over and over again! Also the bead frame things kept him amused for ages.

TALKING OF whoops IKea ds1 has always liked those pod chair things that you sit in and pull a cover over (am I making any sense?)

can second those music blocks, but we had to import ours a couldn't find them in the UK. the Mozart magic cube that is on the same page jimjams linked to (scroll down) is also good, we got dd1 hers when she was 1 and she was playing with it until she became noise averse .

a big hit for dd1 last christmas was baby geomag, but can't find it anywhere now. it's just giant balls & connectors, so can't be swallowed - both dds love it (dd1 is 4, dd2 is 18 months). along the same lines, dd1 also loves the magnetic playscenes and books - she is quite amazed by magnets really!

Found this on e-bay but in the usa, hopefuly they will send to uk, i think dd would love it.

Thanks for all your great ideas, i might have to have a trip to ikea, the swing chair or pod would be great.

I was going to say giant magnetix, ds2 loves his. He loves watching the balls jump on to the poles.
I saw some in the christmas card catalogue.

these are the magnets we got last year, and have supplemented with some more we got in America when we went - big hit with both dds.

Lots of places are sold out of the Junior sets now, not sure if they are withdrawn because of the magnets in toys fuss earlier this year, but we have been fine with ours, and dd2 has been playing with them since she was about 10 months old

I thught you werent supposed to buy those magnetic things because if they swaloowed a couple it could cause parts of the intestine to adhere and even erode?

yes, peachy, but ours are huge - dd2 couldn't swallow even mid-scream (and she has a huge cartoon baby waily mouth then )

I suppose if a child was very fiddly and inquisitive they could prise the ends off the connectors, but I'm not sure even then how accessible the magnets are (haven't tried)

oh, totally. the dds are sticking with the baby stuff for a long time, but they're quite tricky to find now, which is why we fell upon the ones we found in america and brought loads back

Ikea is one of my refuges when it all gets too much! DD whirls round and round in that chair (she likes spinning...)
Jimjams, those cubes look ace, both of mine would like those!
