Abuse of blue badge - should I report it?

I don't know what to do. Someone I work with has a blue badge which belonged to her mother who sadly passed away 18 months ago. However, this person didn't return the badge and is now using it to park on double yellow lines outside work.
I feel that she should return the badge, but I know she won't.
Should I report it?

I'll do it Grin

moondog · 06/12/2004 17:11

yes-my neighbour does it and i reported her
v v selfish and apparently a growing probleme

advocaatofthedevil · 06/12/2004 17:32

Kick her in the leg, hard, so she has some idea of what it's like to have mobility problems.

InMyShoes · 06/12/2004 17:35

How would I go about doing it then? Anonymously of course.... Thing is, I don't know her mum's name, just the reg of the car the badge is registered for.

Her mums name will be on the badge won't it? I thought my gran's had her name and a photo on it.

InMyShoes · 06/12/2004 17:39

probably it will but I can't get near enough to it without being spotted....

I don't think badges are registered to a particular car....my Mum can use hers in anyone's car. If you can find out the name on it that's best (but people sometimes display them with so that you can't see the name.) I'm sure that if you just reported her to the people who issue them (just give the car reg and her name and where she parks during the day) then they should be able to sort it...no problem!! It was on the Tv the other day that it is a MAJOR problem and many councils are cracking down on it!!

TheHollyAndTheTwiglett · 06/12/2004 17:44

your local council .. do a search on your council name and disabled badge abuse in google and I'm sure you'll get the right info

you are doing the right thing

InMyShoes · 06/12/2004 17:46

I know I would be doing the right thing.... I am just so very worried about repercussions when I do report her... I have fallen out with her in the past and it is very unpleasant.
How could they not know her mother was dead? I mean, they will have stopped her benefits, so why was the Blue Badge not recalled?

Have just found this on my council's website:

It is a criminal offence for non disabled people to use a badge. If they do so, they are liable to a fine of up to £1,000.
She deserves this for abusing the system Sad

You are not suppose to display the badge with the photo and name showing, but on the side that is displayed it will have a ref no. I would note it down and report her

InMyShoes · 06/12/2004 18:05

If I was to give the name and address of the person currently using the badge fraudulently, would they check it out? I really don't think I can sidle up to the car without someone noticing.

OP posts:
sparklymieow · 06/12/2004 18:14

what about giving them her car reg. number??

DingleAlltheWay · 06/12/2004 18:27

I would phone up and ask for advice from the council. If this is becoming such a problem, then surely there would follow it up! [hopeful Grin]

BadHair · 06/12/2004 18:45

What about telling the council where the car is parked during working hours? As there's double yellow lines there they should be sending parking inspectors round anyway, so this should give them an incentive.
You could give them the make, model and colour if you can't the number plate without her spotting you.

I never, ever use DD's blue badge without DD in the car. I've just passed my driving test and seriously think I'll only be able to go out with DD as I can't park Grin

Jimjambells · 06/12/2004 19:56

Do it- nothing pisses me off more than not being able to get a disabled parking space (although ususally spaces are filled by workmen not even pretending to own a blue badge). Blue badges are not easy to come by- I think its highly unlikely that she could hold down a job etc and have some hidden disability that entitled her to a blue badge.

The badge has to be displayed photo side down, but there will be some sort of reference number on it. It is not registered to a particular car (although check the tax disc- if that says "disabled" on it then free tax is being fraudently claimed as well).

let down her tyres then she will know just what it is like to have mobility problems, my kids all have badgesthou my sons has run out but i havent renewed it cos i have my own badge but i only use mine if my back/leg is playing up

JaysMumWantsaSilentNight · 07/12/2004 19:11

onlyjoking9329 · 07/12/2004 19:33

Wink

Davrosthesnowman · 07/12/2004 23:51

I report people all the time who park in the disabled bay in our street who don't have a badge or who have one that looks dodgy. I just phone the parking dept of the council and tell them the car reg and location, they never ask for my name etc. I also have the number of the company contracted to enforce parking and they will come and tow away anyone in the bay illegally, 24 hours a day!!!

coppertop · 08/12/2004 01:45

Any news ImMyShoes?

InMyShoes · 12/12/2004 18:52

Have decided to hold off with reporting this until after Christmas. I will report her, but if I do it now it will be obvious that its me. I'll let you know how things go.

Thecattlearemerloting · 12/12/2004 18:56

Glad you're going to report her Smile, but how would she know that it is you if you do it now?

Just think of all the genuinely disabled people trying to get parking spaces at this time of year, it must be a nightmare for them.

misdee · 12/12/2004 18:59

Thecattlearemerloting, thats why we have done most of our xmas shopiing online as dh cant get disabled space.
