just got called into school to change DS3's nappy! (it wasn't even dirty but that's by the by I guess)

It seems that even though theya re aware of DDA advice that this is discrimantory (I gave them Yurts info), the OT ahs advised they would need a second adult to be able and as they don't have the funding then its a no-no.

there's no facilities either- i ahd to change him on the floor (really great at 30 weeks pg with a abd back!) and bring home dirty nappy wipes etc, if I want I can choose to rpovide the changing equipment and disposal equipment.

WTF?

Is it my fault that DS3 is in nappies? he's autistic for goodness sake, they knew about this ages back- it was indeed why the ASD school refused him- and yet they said that yes, I am supposed to sit in and wait by the phone every day in case he needs a change.

What- give up Uni then? Pop over maybe when I am in labour (oops sorry MW, know I am 9cm dilated but just got to pop over school....)? I have a sick child at home and it was only luck that Dh ahd just got up and could care for him, else I'd have ahd to drag him over in storm conditions.

Apparently there'snobody at the LEA who can take myc all at the moment

Oh and the DDA (disability discrimination act) is third on the new heads action list as the old head didnt even have a child protection policy FFS!

peachy that is disgusting. Ring the LEA back and DEMAND to talk to someone then i would immediately find you number for the local MP and ring them and THEN the press.

Apparently the palce has no Health and safety policy either, has been operating without under old Head.

I pinted out thata sking me (esp. at 30 wks pg) or any other adyult to change a small child on the floor- well if my abck went they'd be well open to claims.

DS3 was of course completely thrown by the routine change of me appearing as well.

The receptionist at the LEA says the entire dept is out of the office for at least 24 hours.

I have to take in the changing mat we bought for the new baby for the school as there wasn't even a decent surface available.

Fortuantely tehre's a PTA meeting tomorrow AM (I am Secretary) and the Chair is Governor so Ican raise this but FGS!

The school he's at should be dealing with his nappies themselves. Ds1 is still in nappies as well and at a meeting we were specifically told they had no problems with changing.

And school staff are CRB checked anyway so they don't need two adults present to change a nappy. That's tripe.

Yes your ead that right Bullet . ASD school won't take child in nappies; SALT school wouldn't take a child with ASD- so mainstream it was. We fought that for ages and got nowhere.

that's dismal. If Childminders and nursery nurses can do nappies by themselves why can't TAs or teachers???

UM. re the CRB thing. I've always assumed I've been checked. I've been teaching for 11 years. Got told last term that I never have been and had to fill in the form from hell to be checked. Fortunately I am not an axe murderer (well only where LEA SEN managers are concerened ), a paedo or any other assorted weirdo (although my year 11s do think I am bonkers . . .) so it may be that not all staff have been checked - particularly ones from a long time ago.

Peachy it seems daft making you go in. Could they not have phoned you, asked your permission to change him and even change him whilst you were on the phone thus you were effectively in contact throughout the procedure. Would they accept a written letter from you and your DH along the lines of 'We give our authority for X to change his nappy if necessary. Where possible, telephone permission should be sought first. Should X not be available then parent will attend to change nappy.' It might be worth a shot.

I'm a bit shocked at ASD school not changing nappies - I had assumed that they would and have far more suitable places to do it in. MS primary schools are not the most private or clean of places (having just smelt our DS2s loos as we went in to collect him megayuck).

Ok so- DH got hold of some SEN manager at the LEA, he managed to find a memo from the PAed specifying that the nappies HAD to be changed, and is sending out a letter and revised statement within 24 hours BUT school now saying they need additional funding for 2 1-1's (yeah right) or cover for theteacher if she supervises (), and to provide suitable changinga rea- so not sure what'll happen there.

DH ahd a bit of a ruck with the SENCO before this- her comments were 'Well we don't have to take a child in nappies you shopuld be grateful' (yes you do and we never wanted MS school in the first palce), and 'We'd much rather he was just potty trained'

I'd not find that much easier at all of course, oh no. I love changing nappies. And of course I'd MUCH arther he wasn't disabled at all and I don't get paid to care for him, I do it through love- am fuming at that now

They do have to change his nappy & a suitable area can be ANY area set aside, so a changing mat on the floor in the toilet can be deemed a suitable area.
DS2's ms school use a changing mat on the floor in the disabled toilet & the TA's change nappies alone.

yes they'd leave him! And it wasn't even dirty today- I would say very slightly damp (what got me was they managed to change him into his PE kit, just not change the nappy- PMSL now about that )

Your school should be able to find funds from elsewhere for this whilst waiting for the money from LEA. Totally unacceptable situation. I agree you need to be in contact with as many people as possible. Shocking.

Peachy - move back to Somerset! Sorry, facetious I know - but honestly . This is completely unacceptable. DS2 (who I think we've agreed is v similar to your DS3) has just received full funding at 'ASD 2 level'- the m/s school is fine about nappies and there is a special loo + commode next to the Head's office (lucky her!)

Goodness, there's not even a disabled toilet in our place!

Sphil we'd so love to come back- sigh. One day! If we went abck to bridgy i think he'd get a palce at Elmwood but can't see su tehre- be closer to you I think, only place we can agree on LOL (and come on, with a world religiosn degree.... LOL )
