Hello everyone

I am Debbie 31 years old married to Scott 33 years old i have a daughter Ricarda age 14, a 22 month old son Callum and a 7 day old son Cameron.

Cameron has been diagnoised with Downs syndrome which wasn't picked up at birth, in fact his midwife couldn't see anything wrong herself and neither did the first baby doctor to come out but after she thought he had a clicky hip and called another doctor he icked up on it, so for the grand total of 5 hours we had a normal healthy baby with nothing wrong but that was soon to be shattered.

Anyway they took bloods that day and the results were back today and he does indeed have downs syndrome, i thought i had prepared myself for the truth but i still found myself shocked and upset when they said that he has downs. It seems so daunting and overwhelming i am not sure where my head is but i cant take everything in at the moment, i try to concentrate on what they are saying but all i see is the mouths moving!

My little Cameron is still my perfect little angel regardless of what disorder he has! He is beautiful to me.

Love Debbie and Cameron xxxx

Hello Debs, and welcome to mumsnet Congatulations on your new baby, I bet he will fill your life with joy and happiness as much or if not more, than the child you were expecting to have. There are a few mums on here who have children with ds ( my 15 year old nephew has ds too), who will be only too willing to shre their experiences with you, I am sure.

phatcat · 19/08/2004 00:19

Hello Debsbabe and welcome to Mumsnet - congratulations on the birth of Cameron, he sounds beautiful. I don't have personal experience of Down's children myself but I know you will get loads of support on here when you're ready. How's the feeding and sleeping going - are you up in the small hours for a night feed?!

juniper68 · 19/08/2004 00:21

Welcome to mumsnet Debbie

Congratulations on the birth of Cameron. It sounds like you have a beautiful attitude to him having downs? I know it's very early days but like you say he's your perfect little angel and you are blessed. There are mums on here who also have children with downs who'll be there with advice should you need it. No doubt you'll be able to give support too with your experience.
I have 2 young boys also and have found mumsnet to be a haven
looking forward to getting to know you xxxxx

Debs, congaratulations on your lovely son. You'll get so much advice and support from other parents here, particularly Thomcat who has a beautiful daughter called Lootie who has downs syndrome - I think Lottie is now nearly two. don't know what else to say - but there is a lot of support here. Lots of love. Post.

Hello and welcome Debbie, and congratulations on the birth of your "little angel".

heartinthecountry · 19/08/2004 08:41

welcome to mumsnet debsbabe and congratulations. It is only natural that you will feel overwhelmed at the moment. You will probably find your emotions all over the place (most mum's do anyway!) but the most important thing is what you already know, Cameron is your perfect little angle and I have no doubts that he will bring you much joy.

whymummy · 19/08/2004 08:47

Welcome to mumsnet, Debbie and Cameron.

eidsvold · 19/08/2004 08:57

welcome to mumsnet and congratulations on the birth of Cameron. I have a 2yo dd who was antenatally diagnosed with down syndrome and a heart defect.....she is the most amazing little girl who is doing really well.

It is only natural to be overwhelmed and upset and shocked and any other emotion you can imagine HOWEVER he is your perfect little angel....and always will be.

Your life will never be the same. In some amazing ways and in other ways that will break your heart but Cameron is very lucky to have a mum like you.

Not sure where you are - I was in the UK but now back living in Aus... there are amazing support groups for parents.... we found the Down Syndrome Association brilliant for information and support as well as two parent groups in the local area where we lived. it is worth making contact with them.

Anything else you want to ask - feel free to contact me via email [email protected]

Our story is

and if you have acrobat reader....

here if you download the annual review and look at page 7 and 8 I think is our story too.

Hello Debbie and CameronSmile

Twinkie · 19/08/2004 09:01

Debbie,

First of all congratulations to you and your family on the birth of your little boy.

And secondly welcome to mumsnet - I hope that you get as much support and help from here that all of us other mums get and I knw that there are people with children who have DS that will be of great help to you.

I have an article written about one of the mums on here who has a daughter who has DS - it is beautiful and enlightening and when I was waiting for the results of my CVS a huge help in getting my head round what could be. I will send it to you if the lady in question (Thomcat) doesn't mind.

Anyway Welcome to the world little Cameron and welcome to mumsnet Debbie.

Dingle · 19/08/2004 10:03

Debsbabe, CONGRATULATIONS!!
I am one of the mums who knows exactly what you are going through! My dd is 2.9 and has Down Syndrome, the way I sum it up now " the shock has gone, the sadness comes and goes but I am full of deternimation to make dd life as happy as I can and to encourage her to reach her potential and fulfil her dreams."
I am only weeks into the mumsnet experience, you are lucky, there are some lovely people here and I am sure that both you and I will always have a shoulder to cry on when we need it and a huge pat on the back when all the hard work of parenthood (in general, not just with SN) goes to plan.
Hugs and congratulations all round!!
