AIBU to want to run and hide with DD2?

She's stressed again, because she had to do her reading challenge for school. Her book contained the word 'Czechoslovakia'. She was screaming and yelling at DH that she'd never be able to read that word.

I calmed her a little, helped her to break it down phonically, told her that the z is like an h in our language, then wrote the word down with the sounds underneath. She could read each sound easily. She could blend the sounds with the one next to it, but she just couldn't get past the fact that it was a 'long word' and wouldn't attempt it, but equally didn't want DH to read the word because then she'd never learn it and remember it.

She was so stressed. Already. School doesn't even start until Monday.

Just to update slightly, I saw the SENCO today, and asked DD2 if she was brave enough to ask her questions herself (no) but then I said that she really needed to try.

She asked what days Dragonflies run (Mon, Thurs).

She also asked if it was instead of, or as well as, her ELSA session.

The SENCO was lovely and told DD2 that they'd been talking about it and didn't want her to be out of class too much, so they have decided that she'll have ELSA every other week and Dragonflies every week. So she'll be out of class 3 times one week and twice the next.

Dragonflies starts on Monday.

A further update for my record anyone who's vaguely interested.

The SENCO called after school to say that the Ed Psych service, which was fully booked, have called the school to say that they have a community bookable appointment on 20th March and would we like it!

So we have 2 Ed Psychs coming for a 1 hour discussion with DH and I, and the SENCO, at school.

She was quite surprised that we've got an appointment so soon, I think.

I need to make sure that I've got everything sorted for then, because I want them to be interested enough that they actually want to see DD2!

Yes, it's good timing - It gives time for her to complete the 'dragonflies' group (they seem to only stay in dragonflies for 6-10 weeks), and for the OT and SALT to come in to do their assessments, so we'll have some proper feed back to share (as long as the SALTS actually listen to her and don't just ask her to look at a picture of a fork and clap when she says 'fork' Hmm)

So...this morning, I had a phone call from DD1's SALT, to say that she's picked up DD2 on her caseload Smile

She is the SALT that the SALT who phoned be before Christmas was talking about, who deals with Social Communication difficulties.

She's going to arrange an appointment with school, then talk to me and see if I want to go in afterwards, or if I want to be there at the assessment.

I was able to express my concerns about the previous assessments, and she seemed to understand me when I said that with all due respect, if she shows DD2 a picture of a fork, she'll be told it's a fork! I also pointed out that DD2 will just smile and nod if she doesn't understand.

Watch this space, I guess.
