Anyone else have a child who has/ may have autism/ asperges and who is also particularly TALL?

My son has always been particularly tall for his age. Remarkably so. He's now 5 and wears trousers for a 7-8 year old, shoes in size 1.
I've recently met a few mummies if children with autism & asperges and have noticed that most of them are particularly tall. Anyone else noticed this? My son also has hypermobility.

My Ds has asd and hypermobility and is a little tall for his age, but not significantly - and he comes from 'tall stock'.

WildAndWoolly · 29/09/2013 12:11

Sorry - my two are pretty much bang on average. Both young for their year though (Aug and late July birthdays) so actually look a little small.

blueShark · 29/09/2013 12:21

Mine is 7 and has always been taller for his age but then again my husband is very tall. Other kids average height though for their age.

Ds1 is tall, asd and hypermobile. But my family are all tall too so it's just genetics.

Ds2 will probably have a dx at some point and he's very petite (dps genes!)

sickofsocalledexperts · 29/09/2013 13:11

My boy is in top 0.5% for height, but think I also read that larger head size (which he also has) can be more common in ASD

Yep. Toad is 11, almost 5 ft 4, size 4 feet.

He's been in men's clothes for about a year now. Secondary uniform cost me a fortune!

But I can't say he's that tall as I'm 6ft (give or take an inch), father was 6ft 5, Uncle is 6ft 4.

No, quite the opposite, he wears clothes 2-3 years smaller than his age. Never eats anything though, and has short parents.

Strongecoffeeismydrug · 29/09/2013 13:47

Yes ds comes from short stock but he is quite tall! He's just gone nine, 5 foot and size 4 shoes.
He also has a large head but so has his dad Grin

sammythemummy · 29/09/2013 14:13

My dd is tall, shes 3 and wears 4-5 years clothes and junior size 10 shoes. I dont know about her head..her bouncy curls hide it

Tambaboy · 29/09/2013 14:17

My DS is distinctly average in height and weight even though DH is 6ft 4. He also has hypermobility. But my cousin's son, also ASD, has always been extremely tall, well over a head taller than his peers when he was younger, now he is a very tall, dark and handsome teenager Smile

MedusaIsHavingaBadHairday · 29/09/2013 16:53

Yeah mines a 6 footer , thin as a rail and hypermobile and very very odd on the move (I'm afraid we say he has a Forest Gump look..he does!)
Also has a huge head!

Mummyoftheyear · 29/09/2013 17:31

Loving the Forest Gumps, 'hidden by curls' stuff. Ooooh the imagery!
Lol

Yes DD is nearly 7 and 130cm tall..over the 100th centile for her age

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 29/09/2013 17:35

My head is over the 100th centile and DHs is about the 95th..DDs is smaller.on about 75th..

TheBuskersDog · 29/09/2013 17:39

My son is almost 21 now so have met lots of kids with ASD over the years, some are tall and 'big lads' but I've also known quite a few weedy lads too, so I haven't seen a link.

Awomansworth · 29/09/2013 18:30

We go to a local Autism swimming club... around 20 children, all different height, shape and head size with their age groups. I would therefor struggle to see a link.

My twin ds's (5) are both the tallest in their respective classes (tall genes on DH's side)... one ASD, one NT. Actually the NT is 3" taller than his twin brother, he is 4ft 3" and wears a size 2 shoe!

Mummyoftheyear · 29/09/2013 20:19

No link then. My mumsnet non-standardised testing is conclusive. Lol

Despite the fact that DH and I are both average for our age, mine are both tall for around here, particularly DS1, who is usually over the 75th centile for height. Many of his classmates are about the same size as DS2. So the height thing is exaggerated by people from round here being quite short, on average. All the other tall kids I know also have tall parents or grandparents.

Their cousin is massive, though. At 12, he towers over me, now, and wears size 11 shoes. His dad is very tall, though.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 29/09/2013 20:50

No, DS is the 2nd shortest boy in his class and skinny too, wears age 7-8 clothes at 9.5. He has AS. Does have a big head though, not really that noticeable but hats are the one item I have always had to buy bigger than his actual age.

osospecial · 29/09/2013 21:21

My dd is tall, people always comment on how they think she is older than 4 (this month), she is in age 5-6 clothes. I've always found it interesting that out of 13 first cousins ( DP and his ds&db's children) dd and 1 x dn who both have ASD are both very tall.

buildingmycorestrength · 30/09/2013 11:12

My DS is tall, but so is dad and NT sister. Although I do wonder about testosterone levels...

claw2 · 30/09/2013 12:24

Ds is 9, about 4.4 and size 4 feet. He was a 'big' baby, even inside the womb I had to go for growth scans, as they were concerned he was growing too quickly.

Apparently at 2 years old, if you measure, this is their approx adult height, which would make ds 6.4 full grown.

However my dad was 6.4, my older son is 6.3 and other son is 6.1 and im quite tall 5.8. More genetics I would think, than ASD related.
