Anyone else have a child who has/ may have autism/ asperges and who is also particularly TALL?

My son has always been particularly tall for his age. Remarkably so. He's now 5 and wears trousers for a 7-8 year old, shoes in size 1.
I've recently met a few mummies if children with autism & asperges and have noticed that most of them are particularly tall. Anyone else noticed this? My son also has hypermobility.

Being very tall and being very hypermobile are more connected than being very tall and having an asd - eg people with marfan's syndrome are normally very tall (and have a very long arm span): it's caused by the abnormality of their connective tissue.

DS has always been tall for his age. I am 5 foot 2 but my DH is over 6 foot.

DD is about average I'd say.

DH has ASD tendencies and was always a tall child.

DS is tall for his age.

If you are looking for physical common factors among children with ASD, you may be interested in my Mum's theory which is "all children on the spectrum are gorgeous"...("aren't they though? Look at them all, bloody beautiful, and I'm not just saying that cos he is my grandson")

I love her theory. In fact, I love your mum! Lol
If only all family members (and school gate mums) had the same one!

What Rabbit said. It's a hypermobility thing.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 02/10/2013 09:01

Is there an association between ASD and hypermobility? My DS is ASD, but no signs of hypermobility and short for his age. Comes from a short family though.

My Ds 8 AS is just under average height and takes after his dad as he is just pure muscle! Funnily enough he was classed as very over-weight on his 5 yr weight/height check even though he doesn't have an ounce of fat anywhere Confused. He is in 8-9 shirts but wears 7-8 trousers...bless him, another thing he has from his fathers gene pool....short legs! Grin However my Dneice is 1 day younger than Ds and she towers over him by almost 2 ft, my Sil is 5ft and my DB is 6ft...Hmm

Saying that we have an appointment with OT which I will be mentioning pain in Ds's joints amongst other things.

raffle couldn't agree more with you mum she sounds lovely Smile

rabbitstew have just noticed your post. A friend of mine has Marfan's and so does her son..they are both V tall, to sit and watch him sometimes I do see similar characteristics as my Ds and I know he has lots of dyspraxic traits too due to his muscles stretching too much to keep in line with his growth. He is 11 and already over 6ft.

Whoknows, it depends on the cause of the asd. It has been associated with syndromes caused by exposure to teratogens in pregnancy (medications as well as drugs). In these children there seems to be an increase in height, combined with asd AND hpermobility.

As usual there has been virtually no research done.

Anniemousse · 02/10/2013 20:15

raffle I have heard that before about kids with asd being strikingly good looking, and I certainly find it to be true (but then us sn mum's would say that wouldn't we)
I think it was possibly an observation of hans asperger who originally described the syndrome, but not 100% sure of that.

annie my Mum will be pleased (she will think she is an ASD expert now!)

Anytime we are at any NAS events she goes about muttering "there's another gorgeous kid, and another, look at him he is beautiful'

She will be delighted to know she's not just biased Grin

SuperiorCat · 03/10/2013 14:18

DS is 15yo and 6', but I think it his gene pool as NT DD is also head and shoulders above her cohort

PoshCat · 03/10/2013 15:07

Average size DD here.
