Can anyone recommend a bed or system to help ds not fall out of bed .

Ds is 2 and has gdd , we are unsure if he will walk but he is getting there with the help of a walker . He is still in his cot but he is heavy and I find it hard to lift him in and out. Can anyone suggest a bed or. Gadget I can use so he doesn't fall out of a bed ? I googled special needs beds and it brought up big hospital cot things . Tia .

the duvet is attached to bottom sheet so acts like a big sleeping bag. Can't fall out but can still get out at top. we used this with bed rail.

Dream tubes?

I'm not sure about a bed rail. I seem to remember them only covering half the bed. He moves around a lot .( prob should have said that) .. Often found 'botty up' where his pillow should be .

Just looked at dream tubes, they look good. Do they go all the way down a junior bed?

You could use 2 bed rails next to each other to go all the way down the bed or get a local carpenter to make you something. It probably wouldnt cost much.

Could you put the bed up against the wall and then use two bedrails on the open side so that the full length is protected?

With my daughter we had the bed against the wall and two bed rails down the open side. We also chose a bed where the frame has a foot board so she couldn't fall out of the end. I was keen to give her the chance to sleep in a 'normal' bed rather than just assume she couldn't and for us it has worked. In fact at age 3 we removed the bottom end bed rail and age 3.5 we have just removed the other bed rail and (two weeks in) it is so far a success!

Thank you all.. I have found a long wooden bed rail and also considering the dream tubes . Obviously he won't really hurt himself if he does fall out but he sleeps so well I don't want him to be upset in the night if he does.

Bish we have this bed. The mesh rails go up and down and it is a profiling bed, so the ends can be raised up. It was issued by the community ot and community nursing team, so maybe you could ask about one if you deal with either of these. I will put a photo of it looking a bit more ds friendly if you like!

Hi hazey , I have seen you on the genetic threads. I'm afraid it does look scary to me and I'm not sure it's entirely necessary as ds is very mobile in crawling , climbing etc just not walking yet .. Of course we don't know what the future holds and we may need a bed like this at some point. As he is only 2 I don't think they will issue me one just yet anyway. I can lift him I just find it hard as I have a bad back which I don't want to aggravate anymore than carrying him already does. I'm short so this doesn't help. A pic would be great of it looking friendlier though

I'm sorry if I freaked you out with the link to ds's bed. I have put a photo on my profile now. I was freaked out when it came and posted on here in a state about it, and people came on with all sorts of lovely ideas. I am making a crochet pocket thing to hang along the edge. Tbh though as soon as ds's duvet and cuddlies were on there it looked friendlier and he really loves it (it is the first time he has slept anywhere apart from our bed and next to us on the sofa!)

The reasons we were issued it were a combo of reflux, ds's chest, seizures, my back (ds started walking at 2.3 but he still has to be lifted) and because it is a good place to do chest physio and nappy changes(the whole bed raises up - ds loves it and his sisters often join him!)

Don't worry hazey.. I get freaked out easily.. I should be used to it by now . Ds has gdd but no seizures or heat problems . Mostly it's walking and talking ( nothing important lol) .. If there was something similar I could buy one.. I'm sure there must be a need ? I will look at pic though thank you.

Wow your ds looks like mine ! The bed looks much friendlier and I will ask about one.. Which buggy is that? I'm determined I'm not going to have a maclaren major if it comes to it . I'm sorry to say they scare me too( jeez I sound like a wimp) .

Thank you star fish .. That's looks brilliant with the doors but I would like him to learn to sleep in a normal bed . I will consider it though when deciding what to get and appreciate the advice and link..

Also hazey .. The walker on your profile . What is it called? Ds zooms along with his Kaye walker but my physio has said we have to wean him off it and wonder if that would be a compromise . She said he is allowed a push along trolley but they are all too low .

Our ds has gdd & we bought a bed similar to the Mothercare Darlington (sorry on phone,can't link) but from kiddicare. I can't see the exact one,but it was basically a toddler bed with sides attached. He has only fallen out once (when mucking about,not when asleep) & took to it straight away. We looked at the grobag bedding but were worried about him tunneling under & getting stuck!

What worked for us was: a small bed-toddler beds are ideal because they're lower than a single bed,but don't know how tall your ds is. A fleece sleepsuit to start with as we moved him from a grobag to pjs. A stairgate on his door so I knew he was safe!
