I didn't know where to put this thread but settled for special needs as that's where it all started.

I know you all probably know how fab she is already but I wanted you all to know how lovely I think she is so....

As you may be aware Aloha is a journalist and she got in contact with me with an idea of interviewing me for a positive article about having a child with DS. We did the piece over the phone and she arrranged for a photographer etc to come round and take pics etc.

That in itself makes her fab in my eyes - to have thought about the idea and to have contacted me about it, but now she has emailed me to say that she will be paid for writing this piece and as a 'thank you' she wants to make a donatin to a DS charity!

So I just wanted to make you all aware of exactly how kind she is and how sweet and to restore some faith in anyone who may have lost a bit recently that there are good, kind people like her in the world.

It made me smile and feel good today - hope it does you.

Thank you Aloha, really, thank you SO much.

TC x

marthamoo · 09/01/2004 18:21

Oooh , can i join in? I love EVERYBODY and I can't wait to read the article, remind us again nearer the time Thomcat and Aloha.

Janstar · 09/01/2004 18:25

This is so great to read, when all is dark and weary mumsnet should be consulted, to restore faith in human nature!

I also rate Aloha, she has posted great advice for me and so many others, and always goes the extra mile to get contact numbers and put in links when someone need support. Thanks!

hana · 09/01/2004 18:41

what a lovely thing to have done. Warm glow for the weekend and I'm looking forward to reading the article when it comes out!

MABS · 09/01/2004 18:45

lovely story , can't wait to read article. Well done Aloha

motherinferior · 09/01/2004 19:04

She is, of course, utterly fab

princesspeahead · 09/01/2004 19:21

and your stalker thinks you are sooperamusing too

may I be the first to suggest that today be National Aloha Day? I shall let off some fireworks and have a pina colada while wearing a grass skirt, in honor (that hawaiian theme, y'know...aloha....oh never mind).

how will all the rest of you be marking the occasion?

pie · 09/01/2004 19:22

She is great!

I'm looking forward to seeing your's and Lottie's beautiful smiling faces

aloha · 09/01/2004 19:28

Actually, the reason I thought of it was because Thomcat is an inspirational mother - really. There was a lot of stuff about Downs in the paper and I thought about her and Lottie a lot and when I was in a features meeting and a lot of people were talking about Downs and getting stuff wrong, I said that I knew someone who had a daughter with Downs who thought it was wonderful and had a great life with her. That's how it came about. I hope this doesn't sound cheesy (I'm sure it does and I apologise) I really thought it was a privilege to try and give other people some of what I've got from Mumsnet in terms of understanding what it is really like to have a child with special needs from the amazing people on this site. The other day at a party I found myself saying that 'actually, lots of children with autism are very affectionate' and thinking of Jimjams. And it's great for me to do stuff like this - I'm no saint for sure. My job is definitely at its best and most enjoyable when I'm writing about subjects that mean something to me and will hopefully help someone else so it was a total treat to talk to Thomcat and make sure that what I wrote accurately reflected her views and feelings. She talks so passionately about Lottie that it was easy to write. I also know how pissed off you all get when there are stupid, inaccurate articles (eg the feature on autism) which makes us journalists who use Mumsnet take what we do even more seriously I think. I do my fair share of writing about nonsense so for Thomcat to agree to do this and for us to do it together was fantastic. So that's all it is. If you have herograms on this board, give them to yourselves!

aloha · 09/01/2004 19:30

Oh, shut up PPH!

princesspeahead · 09/01/2004 19:32

aloha, you could be the teensiest bit appreciative of the efforts I am making to mark my esteem. It really isn't the weather to be wearing a grass skirt, but am I complaining? Oh no I am not...

aloha · 09/01/2004 19:33

Only because you are lovely and warm next to your oil-fired aga, eh?

popsycal · 09/01/2004 19:34

can't wait to read the article!

motherinferior · 09/01/2004 19:35

Perhaps a carnival throughout the whole of SouthEast London, with spangly bikinis and garlands down Peckham High Street?

aloha · 09/01/2004 19:36

Actually, they were doing that last Saturday. They were, of course, Primark bikinis.

Jimjams · 09/01/2004 19:37

Affectionate? He's been wrapped round me all day... been showered in kisses (then ds2 gets jealous so he usually squirms in as well).

I think Aloha's great as well- can I join the fan club And I agree with Aloha about TC. Group hug?

princesspeahead · 09/01/2004 19:40

snigger snigger
shall I volunteer the services of the members of my exclusive club to do the spangly-bikini-sashay that you suggest? no, not the east-bejeesus women's institute, but our very own Mumsnet Big Mamas CLub?

can't wait to see the article, TC

Davros · 09/01/2004 20:01

Can I give the bikini a miss? I'd rather dress up as Steve McGarrett or Magnum PI...
This is a great example of the power of MN and two lovely people connecting to do something worthwhile......... and enjoyable by the sound of it TC. Certainly something very positive.

katierocket · 09/01/2004 20:06

Oooh, can I come to the aloha carnival - I can shake my booty with the best of them.

bossykate · 09/01/2004 20:12

i look forward to reading the article, tc. aloha, it was kind of you to organise.

but i must be a real old c*w as i have been sniggering away at pph's comments...

jasper · 10/01/2004 00:55
