What toys do your SN children play with?

Dd2 (ASD) seems to have loads of toys but at the moment is not playing with any. Since buying her a infogrip mouse (roller ball) for the pc she has become obsessed with it and will not do anything else. She has Happy Land, a farm, wheely bug and my little ponies which she used to play with a lot. She uses imaginitive play (makes toys talk etc). I keep forgeting she is almost 5 and i guess she has outgrown most of her toys. She loves dd1's playmobil but breaks it and eats the bits Angry.

What toys do your children love?

Are there such things as toys for older children that are sturdy and don't contain small bits?

DS1 (9) - asd - doesn't ever play with toys.

DD (7) - NT - loves teddy bears (especially the most expensive build-a-bears).

DS2 (6) - ??? - only plays computer games - or with associated merchandising.

Peaceflower · 09/08/2010 10:49

DD (12) loves Sims 3 on Pc, jellycat soft toys, IPad apps.

DS (7) loves Wii games, esp Pokemon, Mario and Sonic. Currently loving Knex and Bionicles. Also likes outdoor toys which involve propelling missiles.

colditz · 09/08/2010 10:52

Ds1 (ASD) plays the Wii, and the computer, and makes paper aeroplanes.

Ds2 follows him around demanding to be played with, shouting "I have star power and am inwincible and can thwow you onto a CEIWINGGGGG!!!!!"

DD (4) Leapster or Tag reading system, Toy Story Toys...obsession, anything DS tries to play with...baby toys! She does do imaginative play, sqeaky voices, mainly playing out episodes of Mickey Mouses Clubhouse...latest obsession. I AM Minnie Mummy, she is Mickey. :)

DS (1) Cars, wooden blocks, anything musical, loves to dance...and his new sandpit, if DD lets him in. :)

DD has recently started to chew everything and drools more than DS.

Its funny how most of our ASD children prefer computer games, games consoles and i-pads/i-phones Grin. Both dd's like playing with dh's i-phone, they have a app called 'talking Carl' which they love.

Wooly- our dd's sound very similar Grin, she loves to play out episodes of tv shows (peppa pig and strawberry shortcake).

I have got them sticking boxes, glitter and egg boxes together at the moment which seems to be a hit (just lots of cleaning up for mummy).

We have logo which they love but dd2 starts to eat it once she gets fed up.

Maybe we will give Knex a go, dd1 plays with it at school and is always asking if we can have some at home.

Thanks for the great ideas.

DS (3) is currently going wild with one of the touch screen games I made for him :) That's pretty much all he plays with at the moment.

SanctiMoanyArse · 09/08/2010 11:49

DS1- bakugan and beads atm
as well as his dsi 9we're talking pokemon etc, anything where you can obsess over a collection really...), lego on occasion
DS3- compuer and ds, as bloody ever! not sure anything else even registers on his radar any more. baby toys belonging to ds4 register sometimes though not for long. he still mouths things though so probably for the best.

Can anyone recommend any DS games for my DD?.. nearly 5. She has a leapster but I dont use my DS so thought she can use it. she isnt very good at xbox or wii...to complicated with buttons! We cant wait for the Kinect system on xbox....you are the remote...nothing to press! :)

SanctiMoanyArse · 09/08/2010 13:20

DS loves the new toy story game, my pet alien, club penguin games and anything by Disney as they have a similar gameplay.

meltedmarsbars · 09/08/2010 13:27

Is this ASD etc dc's and toys or any SN?

Dd2, 8yrs (PMLD/SLD and PD): currently in the sand pit, specially built for her to be able to fit in it.

Also dolls house, lego, cars - she picks up and drops the bits - doesn't really "play" with anything as you or I would describe "playing".

Scribbles endlessly and cuts/tears paper endlessly - can't actually cut properly with scissors.

SanctiMoanyArse · 09/08/2010 13:32

It's any SN isn't it?

BeauticianNotMagician · 09/08/2010 14:46

Ds1(asd) age 5 likes lego but he puts all toys in his mouth and constantly uses his teeth to pull the lego apart and then puts it back together. He quite likes playdough.

My best purchase ever is his nintendo ds it has allowed us to enjoy more days out together and travel.Im ashamed to admit i have to use it as bribery to get him to sleep well, listen etc.Hey anything that helps though.

DS1(6) loves writing/drawing and playing on his computer or DS and with his matchbox cars (which are currently in time out!) He's also partial to construction toys and has just recently made his first proper lego model. This morning, he got me to teach him to play patience with proper playing cards and he loves board games, particularly scrabble and snakes and ladders. He also enjoys getting messy with playdough.

DS2 (4) Likes anything noisy with sound and lights (he's currently playing with a LeapFrog FixtheMix toy) and anything with wheels. He also loves to collect assorted objects and pile/line them up on different surfaces and inspect them, or make noises with them or whatever comes to mind. he sometimes likes to show me his collection, which is really sweet.

ds ASD age 5.4 computer games wether laptop play station or ds

he has so many toys but will not play with them i think its the role play needed to play with most he just doesnt get it

he will play board games as its structured and he can follow rules

he does love his garage and his cars and will pretend play with the cars oh and his marble run

but his choice first and formost would be his ds console

bubblagirl · 09/08/2010 15:11

marne just spotted the talking carl bit my goodness the amount of time im followed round the house with that lol and theres a cat one which is very similar my ds loves it too Grin

Marne · 09/08/2010 15:55

SanctiMoanyArse- yes its any SN, both my dd's have ASD but also share disabilities of other sn children (poor motor skills, lack of concentration etc..).

bubblegirl- i will have to get dh to look for the talking cat Grin, talking Carl does get a little OTT when i'm trying to talk with dh and its being shoved in my face by dd1, its helped dd2's speach though.

i think its talking tom or something along them lines and you can tap the screen stroke the cat or hit the cat and knock it out of course my ds loves that but yes the repeating of my voice back at me like im on helium everytime i talk can drive me nuts but still ds loves it lol

ilovesprouts · 10/08/2010 11:36

my ds likes playing we stuff that makes lights and noise ,he loves itng/spongebob toys now hes in the toy box and every things out grr bles him xx

chuckeyegg · 10/08/2010 13:19

DS (3.10) loves his musical keyboard, pop up animals, crayons, hoop stacking, and a thing where he drops balls onto a sort of tower and they roll down. His slide and small trampoline.

ilovesprouts · 10/08/2010 16:49

oh yes forgot ds loves his sand pit [wen hes not eating it]and he loves his trampoline.

keepyourmouthshutox · 10/08/2010 17:28

My ds loves his keyboard, the trampoline, his cd player and especially enjoys the cd that his TA has copied the songs they sing for assmbly to. Also plays a lot with balls both outside and inside the house, including the Pilates ball I bought in a charity shop - sits on it and bounces. Also loves filling the bathroom basin with water and bubble mixture and throwing things into it to make huge spashes (this was introduced to replace throwing things in the loo and has not been hugely successful).

herjazz · 10/08/2010 22:37

my dd loves dangling things - anything she can hold in one hand and bat at with the other. Consequently most of her toys (mainly sensory type stuff) now has string tied around them

she really loved my mate's cats toy - yknow one of them mice on a stick things. I might have to treat her ;)

chuckeyegg · 11/08/2010 00:24

And forgot to put before endless water play morning noon and night if he could! Taps inside and out.

Tiggamog · 11/08/2010 19:44

My DS loves musical keyboard, lego, k-nex and is constantly drawing.

Also likes cartoons from 70's and 80's, Wacky Races, Flintstones etc, so watches them on Boomerang.

Current obsession is Smurfs, so looks on Youtube for old cartoons, but has recently discovered them on Pop.

Also, anything Disney relates, currently mad on Toy Story and loves the Klik models.

nadia77 · 11/08/2010 21:09

ds 3 loves megablocks, paddling pool, trampoline and anything that he can twist in between his finger like flower with long stem
i'm going to try well introduce some montessori materials very slowly
