What are your top tips for success?

How do you magically lose 4lbs in a week?

I'd love to give myself the winning edge!

Did well on it for a while but well off the wagon now again.
I found lunch was the key for me eggs, salmon, soup. Then lots of veggies in dinner. Drinking water lot to avoid eating.
Unfortunately back with the comfort of sandwiches, cheese, chocolate...

When hunger strikes, reach for the pickles! Pickled onions, pickled gherkins, pickled eggs, pickled anything really. A helping of kimchi is my latest tipple. I find any of these really take away any cravings. You may lose some friends in the short term. 😮

Fatgirlslimorjustlessfatwilldo · 18/09/2023 17:35

Hahaha ooh I might get some pickled eggs

I didn't ever have an initial huge loss, just steady 2lbs off every week, sometimes nothing and sometimes a big loss ,once was a random 5.5 lbs and I didn't do anything out of the ordinary. So my top top would be , see the losses over a month NOT weekly. I'm nearly 4 stone off now. Just keep going...

Fatgirlslimorjustlessfatwilldo · 19/09/2023 09:13

That's really good advice. I think I get disheartened when others get those huge losses and I'm a pound a week sort, but it's the long game isn't it

Absolutely, a pound a week is 52 pounds a year!! As long as it's all going in the right direction it's all good. Interesting that I've never had two weeks where I've gained, I might gain one week but it comes off the next week plus more so that's just what my body does. My other tip is to weigh out a pound of pasta twirls in a bag- it's a lot, so 'only' a pound is a lot.

Honestly I know they tell you not to but track calories. There are flaws in the SW system. I remember one lady sitting there saying she was soooooo proud of herself because she wanted some chocolate but instead she had 4 muller lights and that was only 2 syns. Yea but you’ve just inhaled nearly 400 calories there love, you could have a Mars bar for 233.

But having the chocolate would possibly have triggered her into binge eating and she wouldn't have been able to stop. If it were that easy to control ourselves we wouldn't have an issue in the first place.

I still don’t think it’s sensible to lie to yourself that scarfing down 400 calories is ok because “it’s only 2 syns”

But if it's on plan ,it's not lying to yourself, you either trust the process or you don't.

But 4 yoghurts was binge eating!! The problem is that she’s done this and felt virtuous, so has learned a really unhelpful lesson about truly sensible eating habits. Which is why people come off the plan and put it all back on.

Thank you, you just proved exactly why SW is flawed.

hashbrownsandwich · 19/09/2023 14:21

I have lost nearly 5 stone on SW over the years and I have managed to keep it off.

For me, I don't always sun everything, I don't buy into their mantra of certain foods like the muller lights used to be the go to item.

I just have primarily vegetable based meals, low fat/lean protein options and don't binge on carbs.

Anewnamea · 19/09/2023 14:21

as someone who struggled with binge eating yes, 4 muller lights sounds a bit like binge eating to me.

I also think tracking calories along SW might be a good balance.

But in terms of ways to accelerate weight loss on SW I’d say walking for 30 minutes a day or increasing your walking by 39 minutes if you already walk. Or some other form of exercise if you prefer.

needtonamechangeforthis1 · 19/09/2023 14:24

@Phos have you a ever tried slimming world?

needtonamechangeforthis1 · 19/09/2023 14:34

For me if really worked when I stuck to plan and my head was rejoin the game. I lost 3 stone on plan in a relatively short space of time. I need to go back really but my head needs to be ready.

What worked for me was always having something syn free ready to go. So there was no temptation to have something I shouldn't.

I always had boiled eggs in the fridge
I had plenty of syn free yoghurt
I had cooked mince and veg ready to go.
I had watermelon cut up and ready
Etc etc

I was a huge disbeliever before I tried it. It does work when you are on plan. It's not about eating as much as you want. It's about eating the right type of food and not eating lots of highly processed crap.

The yoghurt scenario above works not because of the calories but because 4 yoghurts fills you up. A chocolate bar doesn't. So yes whilst the chocolate might be lower in calories it can for a lot of us with trigger is to eat more once the sugar hit starts to wear off. So One chocolate bar could easily lead to 3 more. So actually it becomes a far greater number of calories!

needtonamechangeforthis1 · 19/09/2023 14:24

@Phos have you a ever tried slimming world?

Yes. And I lost more and was happier when tracking calories and actually educating myself on nutrition.

needtonamechangeforthis1 · 19/09/2023 15:10

@Phos good for you. That worked for you. It didn't work for me. Slimming world works for some and not for others.

Just because it didn't work for you does not mean it doesn't work for others. So perhaps try being a bit less judgmental and critical!

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 19/09/2023 15:11

I'm not sure there are any nutritionists who would recommend a Mars bar over some yoghurt - as said above, yoghurt keeps you fuller for longer.

needtonamechangeforthis1 · 19/09/2023 15:12

Just to add you can be as educated as you like on nutrition - doesn't change an addiction to sugar or processed food no matter how much you want it to.

Just as being a pharmacist or doctor doesn't prevent you being a drug addict.

Crikeyalmighty · 19/09/2023 15:14

I used to like it yearsago but as I've got older I found I developed far too obsessive thoughts about food on it to stick to the programme.

tensmumsnot · 19/09/2023 15:18

I've joined lots of times, the only successful time was the first time where I just followed the plan. It helps if you know your weak points, for me it is just far too much junk food so I absolutely should count 'syns' because that is my downfall, chocolate, pastry, wine and crisps.

In group, the one who always loses 3 or 4 lbs is a larger person - usually a man - and they 2/3 the speed or only eat the ready meals as a way of avoiding temptation altogether. Not sustainable long term for me.

YouHoooo · 19/09/2023 15:50

The point is that it shouldn’t be Mars Bar vs 4(!) yoghurts. Ultra processed, super sweet yoghurts in particular. Anything that sets this up as a sensible way to eat is going to cause long term havoc.

Phos · 19/09/2023 17:14

I never said a mars bar was better than yogurt. I said eating 4 yogurts whilst technically on plan is ridiculous and used the chocolate as a comparison.

OP asked how to maximise weight loss. I said track calories because of the flaws in the SW system. Calorie deficit causes weight loss. Not my fault people can’t accept criticism of it.
