Slimming World
Devastated first week on SW
Ofallthebarsinalltheworld · 08/04/2021 19:06
Apologies if this appears dramatic but I am honestly so upset. I've just completed my first week on slimming world and I have put on 5 pounds.
I had 15 suns per day
2 hea
1heb
And free foods etc
I am gutted.
Can't wait for the classes to open back up so I can get a consultant. Although so glad I didn't get weighed at a class today as I burst out crying.
My weight is really getting me down. Sorry for the depressing post.
TheMayQueen · 08/04/2021 19:07
Honestly I don't think slimming world is helpful. It stops people paying attention to calories, which are all that matter - calories in versus calories out.
Did you also record calories, or just SW measurements?
StarCourt · 08/04/2021 19:10
Are you tracking your food?
Plus if it's your first week I don't think you'd vs notice anything in the way of weight loss until a couple of weeks in
BananaHammock23 · 08/04/2021 19:11
Sorry you feel so down about it OP! The same thing happened to me on SW. When I worked out the calories in what I'd been eating vs what I'd usually eat it was way more, plus I found myself eating much more processed food (bloody SW bars and Muller Light yoghurts!). It works for some people, but I don't find it particularly healthy (and yes I know about the one third of the plate etc etc!). It might just not be for you.
Tianatiers · 08/04/2021 19:14
Did you weigh yourself at the same time of day as last time and in the same amount of clothing? Sorry it’s been disappointing. SW worked for me a few years back but I only lost 1lb a week. It all added up after 6 months but it wasn’t a dramatic weight loss. The weight did stay off for ages though.
Ofallthebarsinalltheworld · 08/04/2021 19:21
Just slimming world measurements. When I tried my fitness pal last year I just felt faint all the time.
CanIHaveAHolidayPlease · 08/04/2021 19:22
Don't be disheartened!! It will come off i promise! I lost 4stone on SW a few years ago. Give it a month / 6 weeks and you won't regret it.
Its quite normal to gain in the first week as a lot of people are actually eating more food !
Don't count calories aswell, it's a food combination diet. Not a calorie controlled diet!
I used it to lose a shed load of weight and then once at my goal weight swapped to calorie counting as I was bored. I eat less now I am conscious of calories but initially SW gave me the kick up the arse I needed!
Ofallthebarsinalltheworld · 08/04/2021 19:24
Yeah I am writing down every I am eating and drinking. Maybe it just doesn't work with my body. Yeah same clothes/time/day etc.
Apologies new on here and not sure how to repost properly.
Ofallthebarsinalltheworld · 08/04/2021 19:28
Thanks canIhaveaholidayplease
I will stick with it for now. You may be right its maybe because I have started eating properly rather than a snack here and there.
I made everything from scratch all fresh foods. Snacking on fruit. So at least my body has had a nutrients boost.

Think I might give that one a miss stillhurting786 sounds a bit grim.
BigFatLiar · 08/04/2021 20:07
We're doing SW. OH put on a lot of weight when he was ill and now needs to get rid of it.
We chose SW as it allows you to eat fairly normally. with a diet if you stop it can go back when you return to eating as before. This seems to be about changing the way you eat permanently.
You don't need to have all the syns.
Same as any other diet, don't eat if you're not hungry.
He's losing weight slowly, I've lost a bit but the benefit is its just meals same as ever.
Ofallthebarsinalltheworld · 08/04/2021 20:25
Bigfatlair hope your husband is better now. That's good to read its working for you both. I will stick with it and fingers crossed it starts working.
There were days when I had 12 or 10 syns. I am not one for eating when not hungry.
I am so disappointed as I was so good. Not a easter egg or anything. No sauces or cooking with oil. Oh well I've done everything that's more healthy for my body so that's a positive.
TheMayQueen · 08/04/2021 20:34
What kind of things were you eating op?
I think with SW you have to be careful of the processed stuff that is allowed but actually quite high in calories. And especially if you're quite sedentary.
Honestly I've done WW, SW, keto, Cambridge, 5.8, all sorts, and the only thing that reliably enables me to keep an eye on calories and lose weight is logging all intake on Fitbit and staying under 1400.
Ofallthebarsinalltheworld · 08/04/2021 20:42
@TheMayQueen
I made fresh veg soup for lunch
Omelettes for lunch
Baked potato and salad for dinner
Gammon steak for dinner
Eggs with tom,mush,spinach for dinner
Fruit for snacks
I've not been able to get out for walks due to snow/stormy weather. And can't use my treadmill as I have a infection in my groin. Hopefully that clears up soon and I can start using treadmill again.
I've tried my fitness pal/calorie counting a few different times and I just end up really weak, dizzy and feeling like I want to pass out all the time.
itsgettingwierd · 08/04/2021 20:51
I'm using fitness pal and trialling nutracheck alongside currently.
Honestly it's so much better. Portion control and calories seem to work for some people way better than syn counting.
I can eat things that would be wayyyyyyyyyy over syn count and still stay below the calories allowance and never feel hungry. Took me a week or 2 to work out how to eat within the set amount but 3 weeks on I've lost 12lb.
sunnydaleslayer · 08/04/2021 21:04
I've been successful with SW in the past and back on it now (lockdown weight!). It's a good plan but you do have to read between the lines a bit and not fall for the brand partnerships and gimmicks.
Example - muller light yoghurts 1/2 syn = 100 cals
Hartleys jelly pot 1/2 syn = 4 cals
It's a brand partnership with muller and if you eat 5 pots that's 500 calories but only 2.5 syns!
I find the recipes and the meals very good (low fat, lots of veg, cooking from scratch) but beware of portion size. When it says 'unlimited pasta' you have to be sensible and aware that if you pile your plate full of pasta you won't lose weight. Even the recipe books overdo the pasta portions IMO. I tend to stick to 75g pasta and 50g rice.

That doesn't sound like a bad diet at all. Could you be going way over on portion sizes?
I can't see how you'd gain 5lb a week on that. What about alcohol/fizzy drinks?
Another thing we now do is get gousto ingredients 4 days a week. It's totally changed our portion sizes. I had no idea what a normal portion size was, I was eating double before. Gousto sends you the exact ingredients and tells you how many calories.
CavernousScream · 08/04/2021 21:17
Are you sure it’s not an issue with your scales? If you’ve eaten what you’ve listed there it is unlikely you’ve genuinely gained five pounds. What calorie deficit are you setting to feel dizzy on MFP?
Itwasjustresting · 08/04/2021 21:17
Poor you, how frustrating! Are you paying a sub? If you are there must be some support you can access, maybe online?
I found SW a good way of losing weight but you do have to be super-careful with things like oil in the frying pan. Also this may have changed but I thought it was one HEA and one HEB, not 2 HEA?
The two things that made the biggest difference for me was “fill 1/3 the plate with free veg” (and eat that first) and also drink loads of water.
Ofallthebarsinalltheworld · 08/04/2021 21:34
@Itwasjustresting I stopped using oil and didn't use anything. Grilled/baked ect. Yeah they changed it to 2 healthy extra As and 1b in 2019. Not joined online as waiting on classes starting back up. I drink 2/3 litre of water a day. Yes it's very frustrating.
@cavernousscream I set mfp to 1500 calories per day. It could be the scales they are old.
@themayqueen I don't drink fizzy juice. I've had 1 bottle of prosecco on Easter Sunday. I would say my portion size is fine my plate isn't full/overflowing etc.
@sunnydaleslayer I dont eat yogurt or processed foods.
It's all really odd 😭 thank you all for your kind words and help 😊
Thomasina2021 · 08/04/2021 21:38
Just avoid processed foods and sugar . Eat three meals a day no snacks
Slimming World is so unhealthy
Viviennemary · 08/04/2021 21:43
Slimming world is the biggest con out there. It's such a rubbish system eating horrible foods you don't like. I could never eat a Muller light again. Cut right down on the usual culprits. Biscuits cakes crisps, takeaways, pastry.
Cuntryhouse · 08/04/2021 21:49
I put 4lbs on in my first week. I'm very black and white in my thinking, so unlimited was unlimited. I ate so many quorn sausages and baked beans. My stomach was huge from bloating. I remember going to the shops and putting a whole tray of Muller yoghurts in my trolley! Calorie counting works best for me. Always did well on ww. I'd only be looking at giving this one or two more weeks, op.
Wowyouareboring · 08/04/2021 21:54
Iv always ended up fatter after and on slimming World, never again.
CavernousScream · 08/04/2021 21:59
Ok, if you set MFP to 1500 calories and find yourself dizzy on that then the chances are you are eating well over 1500 calories on SW. so you may well not be in calorie deficit. I’d try getting new scales and following SW but logging everything you eat in MFP for a day or two. Then you’ll be able to see if following SW will put you in calorie deficit.
