Hi I'm just starting out, this would be my usual meal plan breakfast: Alpen semi skimmed milk, mid morning: bowl of fruit and natural yog, lunch salad tuna or beans on toast, jacket potato Muller light yog afternoon either ryvitas or Alpen light bar, fruit tea time: meat, salad or veg but tend to not have much carbs if do its potatoes n miller light or fruit and for my evening snack ripple or curly wurly, what puzzles me is the grab and go page?

The best thing you can do when you're new to SW is to write down everything you eat - that way your consultant can help if you've gone astray.

That said, your food sounds good. Remember to have a third of a plate speed food with every meal and reach for speed first when snacking. I probably wouldn't have three mullers a day - for variety, more than anything!

The grab and go section is part of the healthy extras section - it's just A and B options that you don't need to weigh/measure, if you're in a rush. You get 1A and 1B a day, unless you're doing SP (don't worry about that plan until you've got to grips with extra easy, is my advice!).

Is Alpen a healthy extra? I didn't know. Make sure you weigh it. If you have that your afternoon Alpen bar/ ryvitas would be synned.

Do you know what syns are the Alpen bars? That's where I was getting confused as I was having my cereal but having a grab and go as well

You are probably having too much from the B choice section - all of these are from there and the portion size of each are quite small and equivalent to 6 syns - if you have all the list below, you could easily have had your B choice and 15 syns or more, which would be more productively spent on alcohol, chocolate, crisps or other goodies.

Alpen
toast
ryvitas
alpen light bar

How about omelettes or fry up (low fat version) for breakfast? You will be much fuller so feel better throughout the day and be able to cut down your B choices.

Also, how about having some more substantial meals and fewer salads? The aim is to cook low fat versions of normal meals with lots of free foods so you don't feel deprived or hungry - there's loads of ideas on the SW website and blogs etc.

Some of the things I have been having:

Chicken curry cooked several different ways
Chicken and spinach biriyani with courgette dhal
paella
cottage pie
spaghetti bolognese
risotto
cooked breakfast
omelettes
roast dinner
barbecue
chicken breast topped with pizza topping with salad
fishcakes and salad

Or if you want salads, make them more substantial with the addition of cous cous, chick peas, pasta etc.

I would cut out chocolate in the evenings I would put on lbs just eating that alone also Alpen is full of fat and is best replaced with water. Lite bars tend to be full of hiddens sugars too!

Alpen light cereal bars are 2 and a half or 3 syns depending on which ones.

Crouchendmumoftwo · 06/07/2015 14:03

Alpen Light Bars are still around 3 tablespoons of sugar which is a lot of sugar to consume.

Be careful with 'diet' foods such as Muller Light. They maybe low fat (or fat free), but they can have high levels of sugar as well. 'healthy' snacks siuch as Muuesli bars can be high in sugar also.

I would have something high protein for lunch rather than the carby potato or sandwich. So a big tuna salad with maybe boiled eggs or an omelette with onions and mushrooms and a side salad for my 1/3 speed.

I would also lose the cereal in the morning if you like to snack. Have a yoghurt and some fruit or poached eggs or even a sw fry up.

Although there is a lot of free food in my experience you do need to listen to your body and for those full signals. And I do try and avoid carbs as much as possible.

So I had a plum for breakfast, chicken salad for lunch and just had stir fried veg with a salmon fillet for my tea. I have at least one apple a day for fibre as I am not eating my b choice every day. And I have just had a low fat bio yoghurt rather than a muller as I don't like too much artificial sweet stuff. And 2 glasses of wine.

Thats a pretty typical day for me and I have lost 7lb in 12 days according to my scales.

Sw is good but I found in the past that too.many simple carbs like pasta and bread slow my losses down. And doing the sp plan seems to be working for me atm but I know its not sustainable long term. But if I can get a stone off in a month it will be a good boost.

Read your book carefully. Make sure you are eating 1/3 speed and snack on speed if you can. So fruit or veg before syns or plain free food. And if you up your lean protein you won't be as hungry between meals.

You can have Muller lights, and Alpen bars. Sugar is not poison. Just don't have 6 muller lights or cereal bars. One muller light as a free food is not going to stop you losing weight, nor is an alpen bar. Having lots of sugary food will stop you losing weight.

The idea of slimming world is the majority of free foods are natural unprocessed foods. There are a few things that are low cal and low fat that are free. Anything a bit higher has a syn value. Your healthy extras are things that are good for you in moderation.

Bimandbam I totally agree, Ive lost 3 stone since January but i dont have a b choice every day and I dont eat pasta or potatoes and dont often eat carbs. I try not to have processed sugary snacks and eat apples (Pink Lady ones). If I have syns or carbs I tend to put on weight and not lose. I think at the beginning it helps when you are starting out and have a lot to lose, but when it slows down SW doesnt work so well. I have to do tons of exercise to 3/4 runs a week and 3 gym sessions. Having said that i do have massive splurges ie bacon and eggs and bread and a roast this week, hot dogs and white bread arrgh im no saint! Ive got to get it all off now.

Sugar is not poison but its highly addictive and too much of it is in foods and it does make you fat! Muller lights are sugar and I just cannot have one so I dont have any. As I said there are about 3 tablespoons of sugar in an Alpen light bar, tons of sugar in a curly wurly, sugar in muller light and I just cant see how you can lose eating so much sugar - it just doesnt make sense. Also carbs turn to sugar so they really need to be cut right down - hard I know Im a total carb addict and do have bread binges now and then!

I love sugar but really cannot have it as Im totally addicted so I would say drop sugar bars/chocolate bars and have fruit instead.

Its really hard, but over time your tastes can change and you can eat less processed foods and sugar and it's really a way of life and will keep you looking fantastic and you will have less cravings.

Not everyone is addicted to sugar though. I'm not. I love cheese, crisps etc but something with sugar I can have, say one muller light or alpen light if I fancy it then not think about wanting one again for days or longer. And I do not eat 'so much sugar'. I am losing weight even though I have the odd muller light or cereal bar. Can't remember the last time I had a curly wurly but if I want one then i will syn it and have one.

What yogurts would you guys recommend?

What Purple said! You can have Muller lights - they're a free food - just in moderation. Remember to always try to reach for speed foods first for a snack, but you will still lose weight if you have free yoghurts for pudding.

You should have your A and B every day - if you don't, you won't be getting enough calcium/fibre. There are non-carb B choices like cooked fruit and some soups if you don't want bread. I usually have my B as cereal.

I eat a lot of carbs - pasta, potatoes etc etc - but I also stick to the 1/3rd speed, so it all balances out. I've lost 3st 9lbs since mid-Jan.
