Help with an early waking 21month old

My DS is 21 months old and for the last couple of months has been awake and ready to start the day between 4.30 and 5.30am. DH gets up and gives him a bottle then tries to re-settle him but he just yells (and it's a yell you can't ignore, especially not living in a mid-terrace).

So he gets up and either potters around or sits in bed between us and reads a book or chats. Usual stuff.

He has a bottle of milk before bed (around 8-9oz) and then another when he wakes (again 8-9oz). He eats very well, three meals a day plus snacks and is very active. He has two days a week at nursery and one day apiece with Nanna, Grandma and me. The weekends are with me and DH.

I'm racking my brains to try and work out why he is waking. I've considered he may be cold - he sleeps in a vest, sleepsuit and 2.5tog grobag and the temp in his room varies between 18/19 degrees (which I understand is ok). His hands and ears seem chilly when he wakes but when I check his chest and back (as I was told to do), he seems warm.

I don't really want to leave the heating on all night but don't want to pile blankets/layers on in case he overheats.

I've also considered a dream feed (but haven't done that in over a year) and the 'waking-up an hour before' thing but mum always says not to wake a sleeping baby.

Has anyone experienced this and/or got any suggestions to help me? I'm feeling a little jaded right now..!!

Brilliant news!

My DS slept til 6.40am (but was up at 12.30 and 2.30am!!!!!!

As for tantrums -tell me about it 20 months and he's being a right royal pain at the minute. DD wasn't like this (got stroppy at 3 though) and it''s really beginning to upset me.

Its just a phase....it's just a phase...

This too shall pass..... The MN motto which I quote at least twice a day!!

Sympathy for you all - 22 MO DS has woken approx 5.30am since January. Nothing I've changed seems to help, sometimes he goes through phases of sleeping a little later, making me feel like it's going to get better, then it gets worse again. I went to a specialist HV sleep clinic and she said not to diminish afternoon naps as that won't necessarily help. I just think DS is amorning person like me. He's pretty good at just staying in his cot and talking to himself. I can't sleep when I have heard him but at least I'm lying down!

UODATE DAY 3

It was 6am today which is fine albeit earlier than the last two days.

We're off to Ireland this weekend and i'm determined to keep his routine as best I can. But the plane doesn't land until 7pm tonight so could be tricky!!

Have a great weekend all.

Have a great weekend!

DS was up again in the night so I've been mean and chopped his nap to 1hr15 see if it helps He's rarely slept through so not sure why i'm surprised!

Had a lovely weekend. DS didn't get to bed until 9pm on Friday and slept through till 6am.

Saturday night he had to sleep on an airbed as he was too long for the travel cot but he did really well. Went off about 8 and woke at 6.

Sunday he was asleep by 7.40 and slept till 7.30.

Lastnight he was asleep by 7.15 and went through to 6.50. He did wake at 1.30 for a drink but has a bit of a cough so I don't mind that.

Every day I made sure he didn't nap longer than two hours and it seems to be working. Long may it continue!!

I have bated breathe as we have the same problem. How was last night?!

AddictedtoCrunchies · 20/11/2009 11:03

Wed night he went down at 7.20 and woke at 5.50 (eek)

Last night was 7.15 and awake at 3.30 for a drink then awake at 6.10. So slipping back but we've both got colds so are coughing a lot.

He seems a lot happier in himself too so I'd recommend it. I got the book from Amazon yesterday so will be looking at that over the weekend.

I should have kept my mouth shut. DS has knocked the nightwakings on the head since i posted...........but now we're up at 5.15 for the day Makes no difference how long he naps for in the day......

If you find a miracle let me know [deseparate emotion!]
