11 week old wants to go to bed?!

My DS (number 2) has just turned 11 weeks. To date, he has been a very big sleeper, so much so we got concerned and even took him to the GP because of how much he sleeps!

He’s always wanted to be asleep by 6/6:30pm. The last few days he’s been fussy when being held to sleep/rocked to sleep, he’s asleep but just unsettled. Tonight I wondered if he just wanted to be in his bed, so I popped him in his swaddle and into the next to me crib and he’s been asleep ever since (just over an hour now).

Has anyone else had a baby so young want to go to bed like this before?! My first DS wanted to sleep on me or co-sleep for as long as possible and even now (aged 5.5) won’t go to sleep without me.

I worry I’ve done something wrong and he doesn’t want to be cuddled like his brother, maybe I haven’t spent enough time with him because there’s two of them? It doesn’t feel right at all to be sat watching him on a monitor when he’s just so little (maybe it’s just my hormones and this is fine, but I just want to be cuddling my little baby in the evening!).

Any advice welcomed!

Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

I think the official advice is for baby to sleep in the same room as you are until 6 months, which may not be very practical in this situation!

Some children have stronger circadian rhythms hopefully you’ve just got a good sleeper :)

Yes, at 11 weeks advice would be for you to be in same room. Totally fine for him to be in a crib happily asleep but your breathing and movements, smell and general presence are influential in keeping his breathing etc regulated.

I understand your confusion at his ease of sleep as I would be baffled too. Newborn sleep almost finished me off the second time around. Fingers crossed your DS continues his good sleep habits!

Sorry I should have said @SunnyCrab @Onemamawenttomoforsomepeaceandquiet by his bed I mean he’s in the snuzpod next to my bed so when I go to bed we will be in the same room! Or have I interpreted the guidance wrong, should I be with him now because of his age I.e move him to a Moses basket in the lounge with me? I feel like a first time mum again!!

Both my dc were like this. They slept in a Moses basket next to the sofa until we were ready to go to bed then we took them upstairs with us.

fdsllp · Yesterday 20:25

Ideally he should be in the same room as you. We had a Moses basket in the lounge

Yes the guidance is a moses basket with you if you are in the lounge.

After having 2 that didn't sleep through until age 3-4 years i was amazed when my 3rd wanted to go to bed and sleep .
She was even younger than yours ,she would start to cry at teatime and we assumed it was colic until i experimented and put her to bed , that was it !
No more teatime misery again , she has always loved her bed ,she's a teenager now and is still the same !

My DS14 never woke for a night feed ever. I would dream feed him. That child absolutely loved his sleep. I never put him up to bed though until myself and DH went to bed. He would sleep in his buggy downstairs with us. Even when he got older he would sleep from 9.30am until 1.30pm when I had to collect his sister from school. He is perfectly healthy just loved his sleep. He is the most laid back of all my children, youngest to.

sendwine76 · Yesterday 20:32

He needs to be in the same room as you when asleep not you watching on the monitor.

it sounds like he's a good sleeper- don't knock it!!

SarahAndQuack · Yesterday 20:32

Normal, I think?

It's when they are past the newborn stage that they start becoming more fussy.

Orangelover · Yesterday 20:42

My baby DS was like this as a newborn! Slept pretty much 7-7. He had some slower weight gains so we used to wake him a couple of times for feeds but if we didn’t he would have slept through 😂 I was googling is this normal as every man and his dog told me I’d be dying of sleep deprivation and I just wasn’t.

Now at 7.5 months it’s a different story 😂 he’s still not horrific but wakes a couple of times and doesn’t particularly like his cot but we persevere!

LouiseD2018 · Yesterday 21:00

My eldest soon to be 18 done this! She got so grouchy at 7pm nothing other than putting her in her cot would settle her. She built up to sleeping 7-7 As she slept more her daily milk intake increased rapidly, I made sure I upped her feeds until she was choosing to leave some in her bottle, that told me she was full and not stopping be ause she had no choice. I remember counting up her feeds, she was having over the recommended amount, growing consistently it was just what she wanted.

I hoped my youngest would do the same but he was the reverse never wanted to sleep and woke multiple times a night. I quickly realised DD had spoilt me.

My daughter slept right through from about 12 weeks. She’s always been a good sleeper. As others have said until she was 6 months we put her down in her Moses basket downstairs at about 7 and then just carried her up with us when we went and put her in the next to me crib.

EnterCaroline · Yesterday 21:05

Mine was like that from 9 weeks - exhausted by 6.30, slept straight through. I had her in her cot upstairs in her own room rather than downstairs but I appreciate the advice is to be in the same room.

thisismeithinkorisit · Yesterday 21:15

in a Moses basket on the living room then carried up to bed when we went was how we did it. had twins so cuddling them all night just wasn't possible

CaffeinatedMum · Yesterday 21:22

My youngest was an incredible sleeper like this, slept round the clock. Woke up at four months in…. Three years old now and still doesn’t sleep through the night!! There is no rhyme or reason for it, nothing you have or haven’t done. Agree you should be in the same room as him. I used to enjoy an evening in bed with a cuppa / glass of wine while mine snoozed in the next room me.

Copperoliverbear · Yesterday 22:59

My boys always slept well from 12 weeks next to me all the way through the night and would wake up in the morning breakfast, bath and milk then go back to sleep for a bit. My second son before he was two would tell me I want to go to bed mummy and would climb in his cot while I made him some milk.

PimblePumble · Yesterday 23:03

I have an only, adult now, but from 6 weeks she slept 12-6, aswell as napping really well
Even now she loves her sleep.
Embrace it!

somanychristmaslights · Yesterday 23:25

My son slept a max of 2 hrs at a time until 6 months. Hell on earth. I would have given anything for him to want to go to sleep.

user293948849167 · Yesterday 23:29

Yes my second DD was like this, which surprised me because the eldest really was not! I used to settle her down in bed then dream feed her about 10pm before I went to sleep, then she would wake up usually once more to feed then up properly about 6.30am

Infracat · Yesterday 23:30

My first baby slept through from 6 weeks old. No idea how lol and in his cot in his own room. He was a big baby so outgrew his moses basket very quickly. Number 2 was a totally different story - more like 18mths lol.

maggisimpson · Yesterday 23:32

A couple of mine slept 8 hours from 6 weeks to about 16 weeks. Enjoy it!

mumumental · Yesterday 23:58

If he isn’t your first, he’s probably used to being put down whilst you sort things for your eldest etc. Only my first child couldn’t self soothe. I don’t think it’s a problem.
