3yo boiling in bed

Toddler101 · 21/08/2023 21:20

First night in big kid single bed plus toddler duvet/pillow set, 4tog. One very excited 3yo wanted to snuggle in to their new bed! I've been in to check on them and....

...Little one is sweating profusely! Like - red cheek wet bedsheets with sweat dripping kind of hot!

Windows are open and I've pulled the duvet off so it's only over little one's feet.

Anything else I can do?

Take the duvet out and just put the duvet cover over them. DS is 4 and only has a 1 tog this time of year and when it's really warm just a sheet.
Do you have a fan you can put on?

Toddler101 · 21/08/2023 21:23

Can you get 1 tog duvets? 4tog was the lowest I could find 😔

At this time of year we use the duvet cover only. No duvet.

Toddler101 · 21/08/2023 21:24

No we don't have a fan either, good idea to take duvet out.

Is it safe to leave just the bedsheet?

I've got a cellular blanket I could put on

I dunno why I didn't just do this to start with, 3yo excitement perhaps

My 12 year old is ahot sleeper. Just shorts in bed, and a 1 tog duvet most of the year - goes upto 4.5 between about Nov-Feb.
He also has a very cheep fleece blanket that is actually his prefered covering - although he is too long for he favourite one now, and has cold toes!

But yes, take the 4 tog out for tonight. Get a 1 tog middle - or just leave it with no filling, and pop a blanket on when you go to bed.

Toddler101 · 21/08/2023 21:40

Ahhh ok so I should have gotten a cot one instead, perhaps?

Does anyone know if single-sized duvets come in 1togs, too?

Argos sells a 1 tog single duvet

YourNameGoesHere · 21/08/2023 21:42

Definitely only a 1 tog duvet needed especially in summer.

There's plenty of single 1 togs about just an example:

I've ninja rolled out with the duvet now and just left the bedsheet.

Little one's body is cooler but head is still super hot, could the pillow be a problem?

i bought a one tog duvet for our bed this summer. Best purchase of the year.

My eldest DD sweats loads in bed- I’m conscious that all her bedding and pjs are 100% cotton only.
tbh at this time of yr I pull off her duvet once asleep.

Pillow and duvet are both polyester. And then the waterproof mattress protector underneath too... 🙈

Have I made a boo-boo?!

It's unlikely to be the pillow young children sweat mostly through their heads so even without the pillow chances are their heads would be sweatier. I'd also be surprised if they stayed on the pillow all night most move around throughout the night.

dementedpixie · 21/08/2023 21:47

M&S sells a range of 1 tog duvets too
Put a fan in the room maybe

SnapdragonToadflax · 21/08/2023 21:48

No duvet at this time of year, and no pjs either. Duvet and light blanket on the bed for if they want them, but rarely used.

SnapdragonToadflax · 21/08/2023 21:50

Oh goodness, yes definitely cotton bedding! Do you sleep on polyester? 😳

We have a mattress protector from Little Green Sleep which is brilliant (cot sized but just positioned in the bed so it's in the right place) and not hot or plasticky at all.

Well hasn't moved off the pillow so far but based on their movements in the cot over the last week, you're probably right!

I'm going to be so paranoid when I go to bed now, will be up checking on the 3yo every time my youngest wakes for a night feed 🙈

I was so busy being paranoid about bed guards and stairgates that overheating didn't even occur to me 😔

I think...maybe....I actually don't really know!

Is your mattress protector a waterproof one? I probably made it worse by buying a waterproof one, thinking that would be better for a toddler who's almost but not quite dry at night

Definition cotton sheets but tbh I’m a little surprised. Is it very hot where you are? My room is about 20 degrees. Yes we have fans but I still have a duvet. My children do as well, but they are older.

Abouttimemum · 21/08/2023 21:58

My 4 year old is always sweating about this time - I don’t really think much of it to be honest! He’s usually already kicked his duvet off before we go to bed. He always wakes up cool and rested.

dementedpixie · 21/08/2023 21:59

We have polycotton bedding
Kids have waterproof mattress protectors
They both have fans in the room
Ds is currently using a large lightweight throw as cover rather than a duvet

dementedpixie · 21/08/2023 22:00

What clothing is he wearing? Ds just has boxers or pj shorts on and dd wears shorty pjs
