3yo boiling in bed

Toddler101 · 21/08/2023 21:20

First night in big kid single bed plus toddler duvet/pillow set, 4tog. One very excited 3yo wanted to snuggle in to their new bed! I've been in to check on them and....

...Little one is sweating profusely! Like - red cheek wet bedsheets with sweat dripping kind of hot!

Windows are open and I've pulled the duvet off so it's only over little one's feet.

Anything else I can do?

Definition cotton sheets but tbh I’m a little surprised. Is it very hot where you are? My room is about 20 degrees. Yes we have fans but I still have a duvet. My children do as well, but they are older.

It's about 23 degrees in the 3yo room (the coolest room in the house). Windows and curtains closed in the day until the sun is off and only open from evening onwards. Today has been pretty hot!

Dts are sweaty Bettys, they have a sheet at this time of year and still damp at the back of the neck / hair. If I have them
A duvet they would wrap up in it and be even hotter.

Cyclistmumgrandma · 21/08/2023 22:05

Cotton sheets, use cellular blanket over the top sheet in the summer. Yes, waterproof mattress protector BUT make sure it's a breathable one or it will make him sweat.

Ah right. That is quite warm. I would prefer our room to be cooler but I still like the duvet.

Sounds like you have sorted it now though so hopefully they will have a good nights sleep.

Just seen about the waterproof mattress cover, get rid of that, stick a mattress pad down if you think you need it. I couldn't sleep on plastic in polyester!

And you've put a duvet on them? 😯 are they sleeping in the nude/nappy only or full length pyjamas?

We have polycotton bedding
Kids have waterproof mattress protectors
They both have fans in the room
Ds is currently using a large lightweight throw as cover rather than a duvet

This makes me feel better, sounds like what I bought. I've checked, it's polycotton I bought too.

Wearing shorty PJs.

My 4yo sleeps just in short pjs over summer, occasionally tolerating a sheet after midnight. His 18mo sister is in a t shirt and nappy and does not tolerate covers in summer - always feels warm to touch too. Meanwhile I'm in the same room with a 4 tog 😅

Do you know of a breathable one you could you recommend? It doesn't say it is breathable on the one I bought so I'm guessing it's not.

I'd quite happily keep my 10.5tog all year round if DH didn't complain!

Our waterproof ones have soft backing or have Terry towelling. Does it rustle or is it quiet to move about on?

Floppyfrog · 21/08/2023 22:17

Second the little green sheep mattress protector.

When I was pregnant I tried to sleep with one of those square pads on the bed in case my waters broke. I was so so so hot I couldn't believe it and ever since vowed never to use mattress protectors unless they were breathable.

Thanks that's not helpful. Yes I did put a duvet on but I've taken it off now and just left the sheet.

Little one was excited at their first night in a big kid bed and wanted to snuggle down.

I’m fairly certain I did the same with my youngest. She was desperate to have her duvet on!

SnapdragonToadflax · 21/08/2023 21:50

Oh goodness, yes definitely cotton bedding! Do you sleep on polyester? 😳

We have a mattress protector from Little Green Sleep which is brilliant (cot sized but just positioned in the bed so it's in the right place) and not hot or plasticky at all.

Loads of cheaper brands of adult bedding (eg dunelm) are polyester mix. A lot of people do. Cotton is more expensive!

mynameiscalypso · 21/08/2023 22:20

I'm on holiday at the moment with DS (4) and my niece (nearly 3). Both of them are a sweaty mess about 90% of the time. My DS is currently in a room that's 30C according to the monitor and is sleeping under a duvet. I'll go in shortly and he'll be so sweaty. He doesn't care at all, it just means he will drink a fair bit of water in the night.

sxary · 21/08/2023 22:23

We all sleep under duvets all year round so don't feel too bad op. My DC kick it off if they're hot.

I'd definitely swap to cotton though. I use waterproof mattress protectors with terry towelling covering, they were from John Lewis.

Perfect28 · 21/08/2023 22:25

We don't use a duvet at all!

BabyIcecream · 21/08/2023 22:31

Try 'hippychick' for waterproof mattress protector. Think they are on Amazon. They do some lovely breathable ones.

We use that covered by two sheets and it really helps cut down the sweating

I'll check out Little Green Sleep, John Lewis and also Hippy Chick for a replacement mattress protector, waterproof and breathable.

And cotton bedsheets.

Little one is still asleep, has wriggled down off the pillow and on top of the sheet. Still sweaty headed but not nearly as much as before.

Thank you

Ds is 8 and she says has a sweaty head at night no matter what time of year. It's a pain because his pillow is wheats wet as is his hair which is long and usually just washed before bed. Doesn't matter what he wears or how warm the room is either. Different types of bedding make no difference. He's just a sweaty headed lad.

Cyclistmumgrandma · 04/09/2023 14:56

Apologies for late reply! Only excuse is I'm currently on holiday with very intermittent internet connection. We have this sort of thing on all the beds (including ours). They protect against spilt tea and other issues as well as leaky nappies. They breath well and we are comfortable even in summer.
