DS is now 7 months old and still waking once in the night for a feed. How do I get him to sleep through? My DD natural started sleeping through at 12 weeks so I have no clue what to do here! I've tried ignoring him and seeing if he'll settle down again, he doesn't!

My 3.5 year old still sleeps in my bed and still wakes nightly 🤣

Same thing happened with me my first DD slept through very young, My middle DS was 2 1/2 before he slept through, even at almost 5 he still wakes of often Grin youngest DS is 18 months and no sign on sleeping through yet either.
Think you have just been lucky with first born

I'd say offering water to a hungry baby is quite cruel.

Are they genuinely hungry though? Are they actually taking a full bottle in the middle of the night, or just a couple of ounces? If it's a full bottle then yes, I'd agree. A lot don't though, it's habit more than hunger. Once they're taking 30-35 oz during the day they should be able to go 8 hours without anything. You can only try it and see what happens 🤷🏻

Yep, mine genuinely drinks 150-180ml of formula halfway through the night. He then goes back to sleep. But bless the little poppet, although I can tell he’s quite clever in some ways, at six months he just won’t toddle to the kitchen to sort it out for himself, tiptoeing past our room so as not to wake us.

This means, like many, many babies of his age, one of us has to go in and feed him.

I’m not sure water would cut it.

This fills me with dread 😭

My LO is 'only' 17m but still wakes at least 4 times a night 😴🥴

One of mine slept through at 12 weeks, one at 10months and the little one is 4 and still waking - has never reliably slept through the night in his life.

It isn't you, it's them. Keep doing what you're doing!

Dd1 slept though at 11 weeks
Dd2 slept though at 3 Grin

I have to say I nightweaned about 8 months may be earlier its a blur now.... my lo was taking 3 meals a day by then, perfectly well, and gaining weight.

She was having too much to formula and was still having a bottle in the night and, as a result, was not eating her food or bottle in the morning with that 2am feed.

Therefore, yes, I was horrible and night weaned and gave water for a few nights. She may have been hungry, but she needed to transfer the calories to the day rather than the night.

And yes, I discussed with HV... and she agreed.

He won't sleep through the night until you night wean. If he a good weight you can nightwean from 6 months so long as he is having enough food/milk in the day. Night feeding can just become habit but of course if you want to continue doing it that's fine too!

My daughter slept through before being night weaned. She’s since been night weaned and has reverted to waking up. Milk /= sleep.

How do I night wean him? If I feed him, he goes straight back to sleep, but if not he'll just cry 😢 but he's a very healthy weight and eats great during the day so don't think dropping the night fed will hurt him

I literally just offered water when lo woke for a feed. Lots of reassurance and cuddles.

Poppy709 · 07/03/2022 22:21

I wouldn’t night wean a 7 month old if he’s waking up for a feed and goes straight back to sleep, I think you’re very lucky!

scarvesandsocks · 07/03/2022 22:43

Yes my ds was still waking about 6 times a night at age 2 - it very slowly went down over the years, and he's a perfectly normal fit and healthy boy. Don't know if that helps, but just to say 7 months is very young to be sleeping reliably through.
