White noise, is there a CD before I kill my dyson/hairdryer?

Baby seems to like the sound of my v expensive psalon arlux hairdryer as opposed to the tesco value one I bought for the purpose, putting aside the risk of having the hairdryer or hoover on for extended periods (I don't leave the room if its running)I will soon burn the motors out at this rate!

Any ideas for white noise? CD's or make my own!?

(sorry I meant: salon, parlux) and before I get told off, I'm not happy about having them running, even if I make it as safe as I can and stay on hand, I know its a bad idea.

I don't think a fan is loud enough, she needs something louder, not to drown her cries I don't mean that, but something enough to 'arrest' her attention, the hoover for example stops the fussing like magic and stays on until she settles to sleep, then we are sorted for a good while

Well truthfully, I haven't tried it, and am willing too but think I need something louder somehow.

Now, we had one about 12 years ago (a tape, in fact) when DS1 was a baby; before my mum found it for me, we'd actually recorded a half hour of hairdryer noise!

Just looked it up and this seems to be the updated version of what we had. It was miraculous for us! DS1 put his thumb in his mouth and went straight to sleep.

Radio not tuned to anything. We bought this www.amazon.co.uk/Jaygee-Babysooth-R-J-Wannell/dp/0951307401 but discovered that the radio or some pink noise downloaded from the internet works too and is cheaper.

Yep, we used a radio tuned to static for both our boys.
We're on the south coast so would occasionally pick up a warble of French radio admist the fuzz but I don't think that it has done any long term damage!

Have you got an iPhone as there is a White noise app .

CD from Little Sleepyhead has been brilliant for both my DC. Best £10 I ever spent.

We tried radio tuned to nothing but for some reason the relationship between the monitor and the radio meant that we picked up cab radios all night - not direct from the radio, but via the monitor, very strange!

TmiEdward I may try that, as a bit of French radio may work for us, as DH is french canadian and in-laws skype to see baby each eve

PM me as I got so fed up with the white noise cds not being loud enough so i was sad enough to record the hairdryer on my dictaphone and loop it so its an hour of loud white noise.

I can email it I think if its not too big.

the babysoothe CD would send me to sleep in an instant. We used it for DS for about a year, didn't really work for DD.

Thanks for all these suggestions, I'm trying simplynoise.com for when baby is asleep in the day (right now) to mask some of the day time noise, hopefully will help reduce the stirring. It wasn't loud enough to replace my hairdryer in the night unfortunately. I will try the womb noises, and some of the other sites the hairdryer recording might be my godsend though, looks like I do need something quite loud.

We use Ewan the dreamsheep - google it - it's absolutely brilliant. DS's eyes glaze over as soon as it goes on.

If you have an iphone, the MN Survival Guide app (free) has a section of soothing sounds and there's: ocean, white noise, bird song, bubbles, crickets and chimes. The first two could help maybe?
