So Ian Hislop thinks Gordon Brown came on Mumsnet because it "wasn't too tough." Can we have Ian Hislop on a webchat please...

Bounty are EVIL.

Unlike Ian Hislop, he is quite lovely and is number 2 on my guilty secrets blokes I "would" list. Simon Cowell is number one.

Hislop spoke to me once, just to ask me if the train we were on stopped at London Bridge. Sadly I neither came up with a witty reply that would attract a man of such intelligence nor touched him inappropriately. Oh, the wasted opportunity.

JustAnotherManicMummy · 24/10/2009 00:17

Imagine that crap packaged up into a website. Add in a load of slightly chavvy mothers. That is essentially the Bounty site. Just like us, but with txt spk, poor grammar no spelling, very moderated and only time punctuation is used is when swearing. "Its sh!t" would be a very accurate description.

MonstrousMerryHenry you must have missed Bounty* Night a couple of months ago. It was something else. I think we still have GrammerPolice knocking about as a homage to that hysterical evening

MonstrousMerryHenry · 24/10/2009 00:19

Manic, that sounds like myyyyy kinda gaff!

Bounty night??

Tortington · 24/10/2009 00:22

dd is watching on i player - (as i will later) and she literally just shouted downstairs "MUMSNET is on HIGNFY something about biscuits"
nearly wet myself

bibbitybobbitycat · 24/10/2009 00:23

God I loved that Bounty thread! Is it still there? I bet it was on chat .

pithyslicker · 24/10/2009 00:26

I can't believe IH is getting grief. I think the deal was that MN isn't exactly Paxman, and IH will give grief to all crappy polticians.

JustAnotherManicMummy · 24/10/2009 00:34

I found the Bounty thread!

Took me bloomin' ages and for a (panicky) minute I thought it might be in chat... but lo, here it is. You want page 5 onwards for those that are interested.

Should surely be in classics?

madwomanintheattic · 24/10/2009 00:44

i loved bounty night . haven't seen grammerpolice around though... did she really defect, or did it last a couple of days?

oh, and simon cowell isn't on my fantasy dinner party list, cornish, you can def keep him

surely it is in classics, isn't it?

i'm leaking small amounts of urine just in memory...

witcheseve · 24/10/2009 00:46

Custy, my DD watched it on I player after I read it was mentioned on here, would never watch the programme other wise. Weird to me as I don't contribute anythinginterestingbut still feel part of this fabulous website, once hooked its in your blood, bit like alcohol et al.

JustAnotherManicMummy · 24/10/2009 00:49

I think grammerpolice was a regular who name changed in homage. There was someone who defected but I forget her name. Don't know what happened.

It is not in Classics. I have nominated now. Very remiss of MNHQ if they don't put it in.

madwomanintheattic · 24/10/2009 00:57

i thought she started out with a different name (some bountyesque name/dob combo) but mn regs persuaded her to change it to grammerpolice (after a mner had already done so) in homage to the thread? can't remember the detail - though the original mner who namechanged to grammerpolice on the thread after the quote was nearly responsible for me ruining the couch.... didn't she go to mnhq to relinquish the name so the defector could have it?

it made a deep impression on me, that bounty thread... never attempt to get into an intellectual (or otherwise) argument with toal strangers on an internet forum, particular if you struggled with gcse english. perhaps ian might follow that advice when he comes on, eh? (or maybe mners various lol)

our finest hour.

JustAnotherManicMummy · 24/10/2009 00:59

Oh I don't know. I did spot a Halloweeny Grammerpolice around the other day but don't know any more than that.

I expect Ian would be more comfortable with NetMums, wouldn't you hun?

JustAnotherManicMummy · 24/10/2009 01:01

Sorry that sounds arsey - didn't mean to. Was meant to be ponderous... and ever so slightly whistful.

kickassangel · 24/10/2009 01:39

I really can't imagine him being very huggy.

would LOVE for him to come on here. he does come across as v arrogant at times, but i suspect that he has just enough humour to make it bearable.

i also think it must be hell for him on public transport - he is so recognisable, and so many people get offended by him. usrprised he uses the train, not an armoured car.

Tortington · 24/10/2009 02:32

yes witcheseve, addictive!

i didn't know MN towers got posh biccies.

i didn't fking get one.

morningpaper · 24/10/2009 11:07

The posh biccies were on their Facebook feed

policywonk · 24/10/2009 11:15
ronshar · 24/10/2009 11:30

Where they, anything with chocolate on biscuits?

wingandprayer · 24/10/2009 11:37

I'm with Jeremy Vile and Bobbity and Vulpsina. I think a lot of people are being far too sensitive about IHs comments - they were meant as dig at GB not us. IH probably doesn't know much about MN - why on earth would he? How much do you all know about Private Eye? I would love him on a web chat. All the stuff he must know about politicians and his legal dealings, especially recently.

Looking at the GB web chat there were a lot of worthy questions, mostly ignored, and also a lot of trite stuff that was a bit silly really. Demands that he met an MN focus group were just childish and pompous. This is just a forum, a bloody brilliant one admittedly, but there are plenty of other intelligent people with causes out there too. Comments on this thread about his appearance are just pathetic though and just reinforce the negative perceptions of site by other media.

mwahahahamwahahahallyroger · 24/10/2009 11:41

I call MN Mumsandkittens.com when I am talking about it to outsiders, hoping they think it is netmums or bounty or something...

pithyslicker · 24/10/2009 11:53

wingandprayer: Well said, I agree entirely.

i don't think we shoul dbe too down on IH or indeed HIGNFY - the best comedian on there ever was Linda Smith, whom IH must have had a very deep respect for - i don't believe he is prejusdiced aainst Mumsne due to sexism.

I do however think from the outside that mums forus are more about bum wiping than fierce political debate...in fact many of uss have migrated from other forums for precisely that reason- most mummy forums are not sufficiently full of other bitter old hags healthily cynical ladies to please us!

EdgarAllenPoo · 24/10/2009 12:52

i also suspect he hates poor grammar and therefore would vilify shoddy typists such as myself..

BonjourIvresse · 24/10/2009 13:21

He's just bitter because Mock the Week is so much better than HIGNFY these days. Now Dara O'Briain, that would be a good webchat.
