Hi All,

We've been discussing the name changing thing internally recently as it happens, both because of the ability to use it to cause trouble and just as importantly because of the possibility that any new poster may be a name changer or the same person posting under multiple names, which inevitably leads to an atmosphere of suspicion.

As Marina has elsewhere rightly pointed out, the number of users, threads and name changes makes it hard to keep up with who's just having fun (by far the majority) and who's trying to cause trouble.

We've raised before the notion of restricting names to two per registration, with the idea that you have one name for everyday use and a further one for sensitive stuff. We believe this is the way to go now.

Of course it won't stop the ability to troll if you are determined, but it will make it more difficult to cause trouble and to confuse. We know some people enjoy having some perfectly innocent fun with name changing and we're sorry to be party poopers in that respect but on balance we think limiting name changes is the sensible thing to do. Were anyone to desperately want/need another name for a pressing reason, we'd happily facilitate on an ad hoc basis and I'm sure Tech could do a special Christmas namechange facility too.

As mumsnet grows (as we hope it might ) it's going to become even more of an issue to keep track of things, so we hope you agree the limit is the right way to go. Tech's away this week (again you cry!) but we'll get onto it soon. Naturally if you have objections/ reasons why you think this is a bad idea - do post them here or write to us directly and we'll give it further thought.

Thanks,
Team mumsnet

LGJ why do those things make you feel so silly when you use the wrong ones?

lemonice · 06/06/2005 20:57

Sorry Mrs F business is not sex or sinister!

hunkersnafumunker · 06/06/2005 20:58

What if you don't tick the box though, LGJ? Will you not be allowed to post at all until you do?

I think it's an excellent idea anyway, especially if it still allowed lots of silly name changes.

LGJ · 06/06/2005 20:59

No tick, no change.

It can't be that difficult to do.

lemonice · 06/06/2005 21:05

LGJ I think that sound good enough which is probably as close as can be got.

Blimey,
And there I was looking forward to a nice quiet evening with a glass of wine and sky plus .
Ok here's our thoughts:

  1. Naming and shaming - we're never going to do it really. It's just not in tune with "the mumsnet philosophy" when it comes down to it and we feel it would lead to a whole lot of unpleasantness, unpleasant feeding frenzies and it's, well, just unpleasant isn't it? Might be quite a good spectator sport of the car crash variety but hey that's what they used to say about hanging.

  2. Small minority spoiling it for the few argument. Can see where you are coming from but actually it's not just the unpleasant namechanging that causes disquiet, it's the feeling that a new poster might not be a new one, that someone could be talking to themselves with two names (has happened a few times) and the general havoc that can come from multiple name changing. All that can lead to suspicion. Also some folk just get lost too. We were thinking about this long before today's events - it's more about how mumsnet's grown than about the actions of a few recent posters.

  3. Mumsnet just needs more moderators with greater powers argument. Possibly this is true and we'll give it some thought but we'd rather, if we can avoid the need for moderating, than appoint more moderators... not least because every time there's an incident there's a possibility that someone gets made miserable. Also we do think that there's a lot of grey areas to moderating and it's quite tricky to lay down a set of hard and fast guidelines with regard to deletion. But, as said, it's a good suggestion and something we may have to consider as we grow.

  4. Talk should be for "subscribers only" argument. Two answers here. First is that the more people on talk the more likely you are to find someone and get an answer from someone who can empathise, advise and offer really specific help. Making talk subscribers only would limit numbers.
Secondly we don't want to restrict mumsnet and all that advice only to people who can afford to pay for it.

  5. It won't stop trolling argument. No you're right, we agree, it won't stop determined trolls but it's harder to register with a new email than to change your name. Plus that's not really why we're in favour - it's an attempt to decrease trouble-causing posts - it's easier to be inflamatory if you can change your name to do it - and importantly to lessen people's suspicions about new posters.

Just as an aside too - willow2 is spot on. We do need to keep this simple. We are fairly overwhelmed on a day to day basis, especially on a day like today - lots of flare-ups and upset folks writing in who require urgent but considered answers - as well as plenty of other business - reviews/ site development/ comps/ ads/ press stuff etc. As you all know, yawn, yawn, our resources are limited and we haven't right now got time to keep an eye on every name change (There are about 500 I'd guess each day).

Anyway, we do hope we've answered some questions, thanks for your feedback and please keep it coming.
