Dear mumsnet

Can you please do a check and see if quickchange / getreal and shinyone are all the same person and if so can you have a private word or perhaps look into barring them.

Things like this usually are water off a ducks back to me personally but she/he/it risks really, really causing serious pain to reqular mumsnetters and I think it might be a good idea to look into this.

Just an idea.

If this person is changing her name all the time just to say spiteful, nasty, things on mumsnet surely we want that stopped, right??
Anyway, nuff said, over to you to do what you think is best.

although FWIW I dont mind if name changes are limited - I usually post what I think with disregard to the consequences...

would hate to lose

but flame - how many of them have 'similar' names??

I've got 5 email addy's that I could use to register here - but they're all pretty similar (not very clever me LOL) and a lot of people DON'T have lots of email addresses....and even if they 'got' more it takes more time to set them up.

MRSflamesparrow · 06/06/2005 16:02

Lol - good point... flamesparrow @ prettymucheveryemailserver

the only post I have read that is relevant to this is the one on titanias thread, and although I agree it is pretty tactless it isn't actually that offensive is it?

Well...........if it isn't that offensive bring on the "real" person.

No need for a name change is there ??

pixiefish · 06/06/2005 16:02

tc- have passed your request on to MN HQ.

soupy - trolls tend to post on more than one forum, they ENJOY causing trouble, but won't go to the 'extremes' of creating new email addresses for it - it takes up too much time and effort - they prefer to be able to change 'quickly' to their new names, instead of having to re-register.

Thomcat · 06/06/2005 16:03

I'm not calling for a ban on being able to change names, just alerting MN to the possibility of one pareticular person who may, or may not be the same person, changing her name often at the moment to hide behind nasty posts. Just thought they might want to look into it, if that's possible.

pixiefish · 06/06/2005 16:04

regarding the name changing- maybe something could be done with IP addresses. they'd have to change computers then wouldn't they? (most people only have 1 IP address but I do know that some people have 'floating' IP addresses)

MRSflamesparrow · 06/06/2005 16:05

We're so imaginative

jessicasmummy · 06/06/2005 16:05

what is MN HQ email adress?! I want to sned an email rather than rely on them "seeing" this thread.....

Marina · 06/06/2005 16:06

[email protected]

I did post I'd already notified them.

Moderator Marina

jessicasmummy · 06/06/2005 16:07

Thanks marina, i just think maybe if enough of us email them, they will take note. This has been happening too much lately.

Marina · 06/06/2005 16:07

pixie, I think unless they have a very sophisticated home set-up most "home" users have a fixed IP address.
Work/internet cafe/public library users won't

LemonDrizzle · 06/06/2005 16:08

I feel like I'm the only person in the world who has no idea what's going on.

Gwenick · 06/06/2005 16:08

no Marina - lots of home users have variable IP's. I know mine often changes, as NTL occasionaly 'changes' them.

MRSflamesparrow · 06/06/2005 16:09

You're still posting

Marina · 06/06/2005 16:09

I agree JM. With over 5,000 messages posted in an average 24 hours a day neither Mods (who are volunteers) nor MN HQ, who are small in number and also might as well be volunteers can keep up with what goes on these days!

It is therefore very helpful if Mners who spot issues of concern do mail MNHQ direct

Marina · 06/06/2005 16:10

Is that so Gwenick - that's an additional complication then - for tracing malicious postings I mean

SoupDragon · 06/06/2005 16:10

Gwenick, it doesn't matter if the email addresses are completely different or differ by one letter only. They are different and you can register again.

And I'd bet that the persistant trolls have more email addresses than you can shake a stick at. I'm not a troll and I have about 8 I've used for one thing or another.

uh huh. WILD! And hard to moderate at times.

Toothache · 06/06/2005 16:12

Essbee - 3000 of those are mine!

Enid · 06/06/2005 16:12

well I am probably digging a hole for myself as I havent read getreal or shinyones posts (but off in a minute to do so) but I really didnt think the one on titanias was malicious (a bit dim maybe). it diddnt sound 'trollish', just a poster who found it upsetting and wanted to say so without being jumped on.
