Goading and group pile ons

I would be grateful if you could confirm what measures you take to deal with goady posters and pile on attacks. I am seeing this on here every day and nothing is being done about it. I have sent you two emails.

OP posts:

Similar posts have been deleted on other threads.

Yes I thought the same. Strange to post it on the LiW threads.

@myjamisbetterthanyours

It’s here in the response from @BeckyAMumsnetso if you see it they can delete it.

Don’t comb through someone’s posting history, speculate about their identity or activity elsewhere, or use AI to analyse their posts. And please don’t keep pressing someone to reply, or treat a lack of response as proof that they have no answer.

"And please don’t keep pressing someone to reply, or treat a lack of response as proof that they have no answer."

I hadn't processed this bit. Interesting.

On another thread, I had another poster requesting that I name my former place of work and becoming increasingly snarky and goady when I ignored the said request.

Yes it’s all a useful update, thanks to the op for getting the changes. A bit strange mnhq haven’t put it on this thread as posters won’t see it.

One person's goad is another person's difference of opinion.
A pile on is basically a bunch of people disagreeing. How would ot be coordinated when nobody knows each other???
Mn is an anonymous forum, if people ate getting upset they need to step away. In my opinion mn moderation is inconsistent and lazy. Yhey basically look st the number of people reporting a post rather than considering whether it actually breaks any rules.

"One person's goad is another person's difference of opinion."

Not when the goad consists of an unsubstantiated insult. A favourite from one person was along the lines of you "You must/must not be..." as well as throwing in a bit of victim blaming for good measure.

This was from someone fishing for information. The only way of rebutting would have been to publish links to work-related reports and I wasn't falling for that.

I’m confused about this repeated idea posters won’t see it because it’s on a different thread. A link yo it, clearly labelled as such, is on this thread. I went and read it and I never normally open LiW threads.
I agree it’s a mystery why they chose to do it this way, but suggesting fewer interested people will see it as a result is just wrong.

Edit: what changes? The reply is just advice relating to existing TGs

Yes, I have had that as well, a poster demading people give him (very sure they were male) their tax details and work details, experience.

That one was dealt with at the time.

BIWI · 27/09/2026 09:49

To be clear, what happened was that on the thread started by CoventryCity, another poster used AI to summarise the OP's posting style. AI will give you a profile of a poster based on what they have previously posted on MN - all of which is in the public domain.

That led to a number of people checking out their own username, to see what AI came up with.

It isn't stalking if you're doing it about yourself!

The AI summarising on Coventry’s thread is what mnhq is updating on. It will likely be deleted.

BIWI · 27/09/2026 10:53

Yes I realise that - I just wanted to make the point that, beyond the initial post using AI, people were not stalking other posters.

Absolutely agree that if AI is being used maliciously that such posts are worthy of deletion.

TemperanceWest · 27/09/2026 10:54

Yes, I have had demands from a poster about personal stuff along with very personal insults and even a rather threatening post saying I needed to be kept on a leash.

All the same poster I am sure. Who gets banned and comes back again and again.

Yes, I'm 99 per cent certain that the culprit in my case was a man. They claimed to be a woman in a similar place of work. It was very obvious that they were being rather economical with the truth.

If you put "describe the poster called [insert posting name] on Mumsnet" into the search box of your browser, it will use its version of AI to produce a profile of that poster based on their posting history. Some also include things about them that come from other sites, like reddit.

Do it on your own name and see what it says about you!

OMG thank you for this new hobby. I love it.

Doriangraysattic · 27/09/2026 13:13

But, if someone has written so thing so deeply unpleasant and hurtful to an entire swathe of posters - surely they can be challenged and told they are deeply unpleasant in their tone?

'Boomers hate young people and have millions in the bank and houses they bought for 30p, and they all vote Tory and moan non stop'

'Benefit claimants should think themselves lucky. Most of them are lazy and pretending to be be ill' (See also 'my neighbour is on pip and went for a walk...and they've got a free car ')

'ADHD? Never had it in my day. It's bad parenting and naughty' kids'

No, not exact words obviously but we all see this shit every day. Why is responding robustly 'goading?

I was called a Nonce bonnet last week a somewhat wasted insult because I didn't have a clue what it meant 😕. That post stood whereas one of mine was deleted and I still don't know why after three emails asking Mumsnet what I had said.

I saw that "nonce bonnet" post. It definitely should have been deleted.

Quite agree. There's a good bit of kettle calling blackarse here.

I agree with this. You're a bit partial and party to goadiness and pile-ons yerself @LuckyHazelFox.🤷‍♀️

LuckyHazelFox · 28/09/2026 07:50

I asked a question of the mods and they have recognised all the points I brought to their attention. On this thread, I've been unsurprised at some of the input from particular posters. What I don't do is go on Reddit and slag off MN/mods and name posters calling them Laurence Fox in Lipstick. Nice description for a woman BTW. I don't then post that LHF is onto us with a link to this thread on Site Stuff. I've taken a screen shot of it. So please, if you're going to try and make out I launch personal and group manoeuvres on posters, don't. Answering back/being quick witted is not the same as what I've been subjected to. These people know who they are.

So there's a group of Redditors coming onto Mumsnet to organise a pile-on? Doesn't sound like the actions of genuine posters.

To be honest, it sounds rather sinister - or the sort of thing you'd expect from bullying teenagers.

Thank you and thank you for your support. 💐 I've asked HQ to withdraw my last question I posted yesterday. Becky has addressed it and I'm satisfied with that.

But why would Reddit users single you out LHF and specifically come here to pile on you? I had a read of the group you are talking about and they criticise a lot of the posters on here.

Hang on, are all the “please don’t” things now to be part of the talk guidelines? They are effectively saying you must take a person at face value, not use advanced search etc to see what they’ve posted before. Will you be getting rid of that function now? And are you really saying people shouldn’t use AI on Mumsnet, because that’s going to lead to a major drop off in the number of posts and a drop in your engagement figures, isn’t it?

I'm also interested in the answer to this. Particularly with regard to this point:

And please don’t keep pressing someone to reply, or treat a lack of response as proof that they have no answer.

@BeckyAMumsnet please could you clarify if this is now part of talk guidelines, and if so, what plans you have going forward for dealing with deliberate disinformation on the site if we are no longer permitted to hold posters to account for making false and unsubstantiated claims.

As MNHQ doesn't usually delete misleading claims, pressing for evidence and highlighting when this isn't provided is typically the only strategy than posters have for tackling disinformation. If this avenue is no longer open to us, or if requesting evidence for unsubstantiated claims and pointing out when this isn't forthcoming is now considered to be "goady", will MN be taking a much more robust approach to deleting claims which aren't adequately evidenced, or is the plan to simply let the disinformation stand unchallenged?
