Could Mumsnet clarify the purpose of the sex and gender forum?

Can we get some clarification on the actual "purpose" of the sex and gender forum, please?

Many members on there seem to allude to it being for GC people rather than to discuss issues related to gender and sex. They make posts like this one:

"and the overall purpose of the sub forum."

What is this "overall purpose" that some members seem to be privy to and isn't outlined in the group title?

I can show various other posts by regular members who seem sure of the same thing. I think it would help all of us if we understood what the site/staff intended its purpose to be.

No it wouldn't. It would prove that several regular posters habitually tell people that only GC views are really welcome on that board.

They don't. Anyone doing that "habitually" as you claim would be challenged by the moderation team.
Pure invention.

It's a problem when they insinuate people who aren't GC are intruding

Anyone is welcome to comment but it is a robust board with many very knowledgeable posters. You have to be prepared to back up your ideas!
The discussions can be heated but you would expect that when people are passionate about defending women's rights.
'Be kind' won't cut it.

murasaki · 14/09/2026 15:59

That would be a very odd thing to do.

Pretty sure against talk guidelines as well.

Lexibletheflexible · 14/09/2026 16:00

It's more like rehashing several posts that say the same thing about that board.

That makes it a TAAT.

In a while, I'll post all the comments of people saying this and insinuating anyone with opposing views is in the wrong place

So does this.

It's for rehoming troublesome cats.
Thought everyone knew that.

No I think we as a site need clarification on whether the board is there to endorse GC views or host debate on issues related to sex and gender. If you dont want one, stop posting on my thread which is in the place for users to speak to site staff.

No 'we' don't - you do. Remember - I statements.

I will post on whichever thread I see fit. Do you need additional clarification on how MN threads work?

Ooh. I'll have that ❤️ is it male or female? lol

Don't encourage him.
He's already foisted a troublesome cat on to me.

That simply isn't true.

No WE do because members keep alluding to this "purpose".

Tough. It is in site Stuff because clarification is needed so I have to post the comments I am talking about

I'd say it's for debate. However, in all the time I've been on there, we haven't heard many good arguments in favour of trans ideology, and I for one haven't seen any at all that give me a moment's thought in favour of treating trans-identifying men as women, or giving them access to women-only facilities.

There have been one or two trans posters whose contributions are valuable and enlightening, but these are the rare ones who acknowledge our own experiences and points of view.

murasaki · 14/09/2026 16:38

It would seem that explaining a quite clear board title to the OP isn't terribly high up MN's priority list.

That’s not how it works, you need to report individual posts at the time rather than harass other users on TAAT threads.

To be honest I assume they’ll just post to clarify that there is no “purpose” other than to be a talk board topic and to report any breaches of guidelines.

Oh I will report them now
Some I have reported and they haven't been removed despite saying that the forum is for GC users and the perpetuation of their views

OP posts:
Ereshkigalangcleg · 14/09/2026 16:42

Well posts like the one you quoted are just a matter of opinion, if they aren’t abusing anyone, what exactly is the problem?

Ereshkigalangcleg · 14/09/2026 16:40

And then the users that belueve otherwise and allude to this purpose can come and explain what they meant.

OP posts:
murasaki · 14/09/2026 16:42

Probably because they don't say that

Ereshkigalangcleg · 14/09/2026 16:44

If someone actually tells you you aren’t allowed to post on a thread, like <checks notes> you have today to other posters twice, in the middle of whinging about that very thing, that’s probably in breach of talk guidelines and you should report them @Lexibletheflexible

Ereshkigalangcleg · 14/09/2026 16:46

Lexibletheflexible · 14/09/2026 16:42

Or they might not.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 14/09/2026 16:48

If I say that “Mumsnet FWR has been instrumental in the resistance against trans rights activism both in the UK and globally” that’s my opinion, yes, and it gives it a “purpose” in hindsight. But it wasn’t created with that purpose in mind. It’s just a space for people to talk about sex based rights.

Lins77 · 14/09/2026 16:49

This is completely pointless. It boils down to "some people, possibly, have different opinions on the exact purpose of a discussion board". So what if they do? No forum member can prevent another forum member from posting whatever they want on any thread they want on any board they want.

Nobody, apart from MN, can prevent Lexi from posting her thoughts and views, indeed she does so extensively.
