MNHQ do your advertisers know what happens here at night? Not very advertiser-friendly is it? The tabloids will be picking this up one day.

AIBU to make my DH lick my arse while I shart straight into his mouth and he swallows every drop

If I have to read that then so do you.

Do you want screenshots? I mean, they’ve already been accepted by whoever or whatever is checking them, so I can put them here, yes?

So, at what point are your advertisers going to cancel their adverts with you and start advertising on a porn site which is more family friendly than here?

I believe this is the second or third night in a row? And you don’t even pay people to monitor this?

I do appreciate the work of the Night watch team but a site as big as Mumsnet shouldn't be relying on you.

I don’t know who they are or any backstory, but I have in my head an image of an Australian woman maybe doing her full wfh day, or looking after kids, or doing her supermarket shop etc, and to have to spend a huge amount of time on here as well, unpaid, is ridiculous really. They should be paid a proper amount.

Is this still happening? They are still not paying. I'm deleting account & sick and tired of Mumsnet being hopeless with moderation.

No screenshot visible. They didn’t approve mine either, despite approving it in the first place so it appears in my screenshot 🤷‍♀️.

They don't approve thread titles, there is only a filter on images

They don’t take responsibility for anything, then it’s all ‘ooohhh but do report things to us, it’s so important and we rely on you’.

On a slightly different but related note, loads of us are getting sick of the sheer number of threads being placed on the site purely to drive traffic that are clearly not from genuine posters. They are certain classic characteristics of these threads which make them very formulaic and easy to spot.

Who is behind it though, and why? Who gains anything from dumping wholesale, made up threads onto MN except MN itself and/or its advertisers? They are turning this forum into a travesty because it's becoming blatantly obvious that people are spending all their time counselling non-existent people on non-existent moral dilemmas. I thought MN was better than this.

There was a whole thread on Site Stuff about this a while ago and as usual we were encouraged to report them, blah blah.

I did finally bother to report one three days ago. I asked the mods to do a search on that account to see if there were multiple user names all with just one post under each name, and to cross reference the threads to see if there were any obvious inconsistencies between threads, making it highly unlikely that they were all started by the same 'person' who genuinely had all these wildly unconnected problems in their life.

I haven't even received a response.

Jaimelefromage · Yesterday 04:49

Nightwatch should take a stand and refuse to work for free.
Justine runs a multimillion £ company but is too tight to pay for proper moderation. Doesn’t want it eating into her profit margin.

ImpossibleGermany yes exactly, well described.

I can never ever understand how people do not recognise the threads
of nonsense, someone will jump on then incredibly the thread lengthens
with the OP nowhere to be seen - or, as with one atm, a smirking OP
will carry on with the fantastical story, embellishments, new developments.

There is increasingly, limited discernment on this site.
Spelling, grammar, syntax, let alone content is increasingly poor, many
posters seem dimwitted, many are fantasists, many are unexpectedly
in dire straits and genuinely need advice possibly other than ltb, when the
Hive comes alive, a strength of Mumsnet, when we are all in accord.

There will always be sickos on sites such as these and moderation needs
stepping up, undoubtedly.
Wasn’t there a rule mooted of new posters having to wait a few days between
signing up and initial posting?

New posters on moribund threads should also be flagged, they are a real
nuisance, galling when one realises the OP has long gone, the thread is
years old.
This is apart from those advertising whatevers, hooking on to old threads.

The level of aggression, hostility and combativeness on here can be dismaying

This is the evolution of Mumsnet which moves it from its source, demographic,
subjects under discussion, downwards, hurtling towards a parody of itself,
mocked, derided, criticised, avoided, now viewed amongst my peers with
cynicism and distance.

Over the years I have had many conversations here which have profoundly
affected my thought processes, I’ve helped where I believed I could, marvelled
at erudite posts, despaired over many posters predicaments, learned lots,
relied on recommendations, hoped the good natured element would continue,
expected that protective moderation would keep this valuable site clean.

Scatalogical content has no place here.

NeelyOHara · Yesterday 06:03

Why are people allowed to join and post straight away? If they had to wait it would stop a lot of these posts, I’ve never understood why you are allowed to name change either.

Even some of (not all) the paid moderators are extremely unprofessional.

I've had responses from one mod asking why I reported post A from poster Y but not post B from poster X. Which is a) irrelevant to the TGs breached in A, b) not my job given I'm not a paid moderator, c) redundant given if they believe it breaches TGs and could just delete it themselves.

I've also had responses from the same mod asking me to justify my report, or in one instance telling me that because they thought the subject of a personal attack was a wrong 'un that they were going to allow it to stand. I was surprised to hear that the application of the TGs depended on whether MNHQ liked you or not.

Completely and utterly unprofessional moderation.

I reported a poster last night/this morning. It was lots of repetitive crude swear words to do with bottoms, lines and lines of it, very weird & posted a few times. What the heck is going on?!

Sounds like the poster that everyone on this thread (and the other one) was kept busy reporting and the night watch was kept busy deleting.

I don't get how anyone can get pleasure from posting such rubbish. They can't have 2 brain cells to rub together.

This place is revolting at night, full of incels and perverts.

The only downside I suppose if if someone is in a desperate situation eg dv . But I agree that being able to sign up and spam/troll/ worse immediately is an absolute gift to the malicious poster/bot.

The stupid nonsense threads and the "talking point" threads that are clearly informed by people with an agenda get my goat too.

I wonder whether the "trending " feature is actively unhelpful here. Too often threads stick in trending when the OP is long gone and you just have other posters bickering furiously. Which feels a bit pointless, they are arguing about someone else's situation that they don't know much about at all. Maybe "trending" should be relabelled 'join in a pointless argument '.

The increasing (i assume) user numbers and the rise of AI and misinformation means that some of the old, cuddly ways of mumsnet just don't work any more I fear. Mumsnet is going to have tonchange, the "old mumsnet" can't be recaptured as was I don't suppose, but it could clearly be a hell of a lot better than it is now.

I am astonsished there are no paid moderators overnight, that's absolutely crackers and surely dangerous?

Edited for some typos

DierdreDaphne · Yesterday 07:32

BeckyAMumsnet · Yesterday 09:50

Hi all, thanks for all your posts.

What’s been happening overnight is horrible, and we completely understand why people are angry about it. We are too.

Unfortunately, this kind of trolling really is whack-a-mole. We suspend accounts, delete posts and block what we can, and the person behind it comes back under another account or changes tactics to try to get around the systems in place.
This isn’t unique to Mumsnet. Every large platform with user-generated content deals with the same problem, using a mix of automated detection, image and link screening, moderation and user reports. None of them has a magic filter that catches everything.

We do have protections in place here. Images are screened, links are screened and there are other automated measures running behind the scenes. We’re not going to publish the detail of all of those, as it would be fairly self-defeating.

The screenshot issue is a good example: uploaded images go through image screening, so a screenshot of offensive content may be blocked even if the original text appeared on the site. Your reports are also genuinely useful. They’re not a substitute for moderation - they’re another signal, particularly when someone is repeatedly changing accounts or tactics.

We also understand the suggestion that new users shouldn’t be able to post straight away, but there’s a real downside to that. People often arrive on Mumsnet because they need help now - with domestic abuse, pregnancy worries, a sick child or a crisis at home.

None of this means we think it’s good enough when this happens. We don’t. We made changes after the previous incident involving illegal images, and we continue to strengthen the protections we use.

Thank you to everyone who reported things last night, and especially to Nightwatch, who had a fairly grim few hours dealing with someone very determined to keep coming back.

PullTheBricksDown · Yesterday 09:56

Yeah, I notice in all the above there's still no commitment to paying proper night time moderators. Shameful. You've known this is an issue for months now but won't act, and are continuing to exploit volunteers.

tinyspiny · Yesterday 09:57

@BeckyAMumsnet the thing is last night things were being reported for about an hour before any nightwatch got involved , not their fault I know but the site becomes unusable . Is it possible to just stop new posters / names posting during nightwatch hours - if anyone is that desperate I’m sure they could find help elsewhere .

Surely a better approach would be to keep the full moderation going 24 hrs. Why can't you do that @BeckyAMumsnet ? Is therea good reason?

We’re all just pretty sick of the lack of proper night time moderation, @BeckyAMumsnet. We know Justine doesn’t want to spend the cash but it’s just not good enough. If you think the site needs to be moderated properly in the day time, why not overnight? How is it different?

It is. There are a handful of the old guard mods who are still around, and they seem to be on the ball.

Some of the new names which have appeared over the last 2(?)ish years however seem to take a rather flexible approach to the TGs. Or are happy to ignore them completely and tell posters to challenge on the thread. It's lazy and unprofessional - mods need to be enforcing the guidelines properly without bias or favour.

BeckyAMumsnet · Yesterday 10:36

Thanks all - it’s a fair question.

We completely understand why, after a night like last night, 24-hour moderation feels like the obvious answer, but removing something once it appears is only part of the problem. The harder job is stopping someone who keeps changing accounts and tactics from getting it in front of users at all. A lot of the work that protects the site overnight is actually the less visible stuff, with systems designed to stop malicious content getting through in the first place and we are constantly working to improve on it.

Nightwatch are extra eyes, not unpaid moderators, and they have deliberately limited powers and responsibilities. We’re hugely grateful to them, but they are not expected to patrol the site all night or carry responsibility when a determined troll gets through.

All large platforms deal with trolling, but Mumsnet attracts a particular kind of hostility because a site used predominantly by women will inevitably attract some people motivated by misogyny as much as by the usual desire to disrupt.

@tinyspiny on stopping new users posting overnight - we could, but that would also mean telling genuine people arriving here frightened, desperate or needing support to come back in the morning. We don’t think that’s the right trade-off but we understand your reasoning.
