What is the point of endless quotes when they become totally unreadable and the button to hide them is at the bottom meaning you need to scroll through a headache inducing mile of vertical lines?

Yeah it's annoying. I won't open them now.

Conspiracytheories · 05/03/2026 12:14

Oh I absolutely agree OP.
Really annoying.

Yeah it's annoying. I won't open them now.

Me neither. And I really regret it if I accidentally click on one.

JaneJeffer · 05/03/2026 17:06

But you don’t realise how many quotes are contained until you click on it. So annoying.

Thanks for flagging this, JaneJeffer. We're looking into it now and will be back with an update as soon as we can.

Thanks @JoMumsnet

@JoMumsnet woukd be great if you could, this has been mentioned a few times. Simply putting the hide quote history at the top of the quote (rather than underneath when it all unravels) would mean you could easily hide it again without the endless scroll of despair you have to do now.

JaneJeffer · 06/03/2026 12:13

Scroll of despair is exactly right @Lonelycrab 😆

Because it’s a survey about what will replace the current quote system, the format of it.

PencilsInSpace · 30/06/2026 21:45

Has there been any progress on this?

I had to scroll for miles to get to the bottom of this one 😭

If it's going to be ages for a fix, would it be possible to just add a 'hide quote history' button at the top? That would be so much less annoying.

Hi all,

First of all, apologies for the delay in coming back to this, and thank you to everyone who took the time to complete our survey and share your thoughts on quotes. We really do appreciate the feedback.

We've been looking into this off the back of what you've told us. We agree that the formatting of posts with multiple quotes needs improving, as it can be difficult to follow at the moment. Working out the best way to address it is a little more complex than it might seem at first glance.

We're actively exploring possible solutions and we'll update here as soon as we have any news to share.

Thanks again for your feedback and for your patience while we work through it.

PencilsInSpace · 03/07/2026 09:58

Thank you @AmeliaPMumsnet

Would a 'hide quote history' button at the top be possible for now?

AmeliaPMumsnet · 08/07/2026 14:53

Hi all,

We're still working on a fix for quote formatting, so thanks for bearing with us.

We've just released a change on web that should help make threads more scannable. Long posts will now be collapsed by default (including long posts within quotes), with a 'See more'/'See less' option to expand and collapse them.

We know this won't solve the original problem, but we hope it'll make things a bit easier in the meantime.

Let us know if you have any thoughts or feedback. We'll post here again as soon as we have an update on the formatting issues.

Thanks for your patience!

That's really blimmin' annoying! When MNing one handed (ie a lot of the time, especially for new parents) I don't want to be clicking the screen to read every other post! Can I turn off the see more thing in my talk settings?

Agree. This feature isn't even what this thread was about!

I agree with others that a "hide quote history" at the top of the quotes would be better. Then if you accidentally show the quotes, you can close it again without needing to scroll for Eternity.

BIWI · 08/07/2026 15:16

No, no, no, no!!!

I understand that a long quote history is an issue - so the show more/less feature could be helpful there.

But we DON'T need it on every other bloody post!

@AmeliaPMumsnet Stop it. Please.

Why is this new feature not optional? I don't want posts automatically truncated. It's really annoying.

AmeliaPMumsnet · 08/07/2026 15:29

Hi @BabblingBiddy, @GetAFurqingCompass, @BIWI & @DappledThings,

Thank you for sharing your thoughts, and sorry that you're finding it annoying. We've just rolled back the change that collapses long posts while we increase the cut-off point, so you won't need to expand them as often.

We're still working on the 'hide quote history' part of this, as it's proving a bit more complicated than it first seemed. In the meantime, there's also been an improvement to the way quotes are displayed. When there are lots of nested quotes within a post, they should no longer be pushed off the screen on mobile and should be much easier to read.

While it is rolled back why not also take the opportunity to add in making it a setting where you can choose the default rather than imposing collapsed posts at any length?

Look at the Guardian's comments. On every thread you can select how many posts per page and whether you want them all expanded or collapsed.

Am I the only person who doesn’t understand this sentence?

I noticed the quotes are readable now and it is so much better @AmeliaPMumsnet 👍

Please give us the option to completely opt out. I don't want to ever click "see more" to read a whole post. Lengthy quotes, fine, I agree that would be handy. Posts, absolutely not.
