Why are the people emoji changing sex?

I have noticed the last few days that every time I post 🤷♀️, it is automatically changed to a boy !
im not alone apparently, what is happening here?
I sincerely hope that mn are not changing skintone on poc posters too!

MN is already aware and fixing it, but in the meantime... I suppose the difference are three form emoji (neutral, male, female) Vs single word emoji.

For the three form ones, it looks behind the scenes as "shrug - female", "shrug - male" and "shrug", and the MN user interface reads it wrongly and sees it as "shrug" "female" or "shrug" "male", putting neutral shrug and separate male/female into the image.

This should now be fixed. Apologies about the disruption!

@FourIsNewSix That's mostly correct. In an effort to fix some formatting issues we've been having we tightened up our text processing. As a consequence of that, the emoji zero width joiner character was being stripped which removed the variant information from the emoji code.

This should all be fixed now, but as always please let us know if you see any issues!

Yes, I noticed it yesterday with 🤦‍♀️

Edit - oh, it worked this time. I had a man with a symbol yesterday

And of course, stripping the modifier changes the sex of the emoji because the default is male.
