If not, could we have one please?

Thank you Errol!

That's an odd little hidey hole isn't it? Whoever put it there thinks history is very special interest.

I see I was there in the summer of 2023, in threads that are still pretty near the top. Perhaps a higher-visibility placing might help.

A 'the world around us' topic with environmental, ecology, geology, history, archaeology stuff together might be good if it had an attractive header.

EndlesslyDecluttering · 24/05/2025 12:33

Yes, I was thinking about the niche versus broad threat topics question again, also the Following Topics function which I've never used. The reason I've never bothered using is partly habit of just using most active (mine is quite slow moving because I've got AIBU and Relationships hidden so if there is a thread of interest in a niche topic I'm likely to spot it). But partly because many of the thread topics are so broad. But if they go too niche no one twigs they are there.

DeanElderberry · 24/05/2025 12:45

Nature is interesting for lots of us - the Archers thread has already been mentioned, the Bluestocking regulars had my Giant Yellow Spider identified before my hair had settled.

And admired the little face looking out of its cobweb-and-lichen nest.

I think the Follow Topics feature is much underused- and perfect for these niche topics because it shows under your notifications when a new thread is posted. Really helps to keep a topic busy and I would encourage anyone to use it.

Seriously, if you haven't tried it yet, give it a go now!

Yes please! I love wildflowers and nature in general 🌼🌸🌺

EndlesslyDecluttering · 24/05/2025 19:29

Do you have to go to My Feed to see them? I've never used that, Injust use Most Active and I'm On. Just followed Gardening to see what happens.

Yes I use it all the time 😊

@kinkytoesthank you for the welcome.

I don't know much about the Ozzy wildlife in afraid. But can contribute some very cool photos from NZ. I'm feel so lucky to live in a place with dolphins, Stingray and penguins as a regular part of my life.

It's a very different context here and I've had to get used to killing things in the name of conservation.

I'd liked a board on wildlife experiences too as we love to travel for these.

Penguins! That is just so cool 😃

…it took around a month and featured a sit-in on the redundant World Cup 2010 board. I was on there with a different name and the board was intended to cover more than just walking and camping.

Hmm sounds like we could be up against quite a challenge then. 🤔

I would also love to see a Nature/Wildlife type topic.

There are a couple of good threads on Great Outdoors, such as Nature Notes

nahthatsnotforme · 26/05/2025 20:04

Anyone else watching Springwatch?

Anyone else watching Springwatch?

I'm in Amsterdam at the minute, but can't wait to catch up when I get back. And of course enjoy it for the lovely long 3 weeks it's on. Don't forget to look out for Chris shoehorning in song lyrics.

I am over the moon today as I arrived at the Van Gogh museum and there was a rose ringed parakeet singing above me in a tree as I waited in the queue. My lovely Merlin picked it up even over the rather smashing chap who was busking with a sax. Also the sun shone.

The Springwatch Street is an interesting addition for those of us who live in cities. I have foxes and hedgehogs but I think the chances of a badger is very slim.

kinkytoes · 28/05/2025 12:01

@HebeMumsnet hello, have we made enough of a justification for this yet please?

If not, what else is needed?

Thank you 😊

Just a thought - the radio topic was recently renamed Radio & podcasts. Maybe Gardening could be renamed Gardening & nature? Or Great Outdoors & nature?

Maybe less difficult to get a topic renamed than start a new one. Sneakily it would also push wildlife friendly gardening 😅

RainOnTins · 28/05/2025 14:28

I think given how little the Great Outdoors board is used, broadening that out to something like ‘nature & the outdoors’ makes a lot of sense to me @Agapornis

I personally really don’t like the title of the current board. “The great outdoors” sounds, to me, as if it’s for discussing lots of super adventurous stuff. Just ‘the outdoors’ would do! But that’s just my opinion…

The original request was for ‘outdoorsy shite’, but MNHQ insisted on an alternative

CatOnAHotRadiator · 28/05/2025 14:49

I like the suggestion of “Nature & the Outdoors” - sounds broader and less like it’ll be full of questions about hiking and camping.

SherlockHolmes · 28/05/2025 14:49

I'd like this too, especially for posting hedgehog photos!

FictionalCharacter · 28/05/2025 14:58

Seeline · 18/05/2025 13:10

Excellent idea!
Would be somewhere for all the random what tree/flower/spider is this type questions too.

And hopefully, if people following the topic are interested in wildlife there wouldn’t be the usual flood of “eek, ugh I hate them” or “I’d have to burn my house down” replies about spiders and insects!

I’d love a wildlife and conservation topic. None of the existing ones fit very well.

ScottBakula · 28/05/2025 15:04

I'd like a thread like this too.
One of the things that fascinating ( I think ) is when nature fights back, like when you see a random flower growing out of a wall, or a tree growing around metal railings and such like.
So we could have photos of
'well that doesn't belong there' 😁

I'll also add that I'm putting far less food out now because chicks are being fed.

Chicks need insects, worms and caterpillars which also contain water. If they are fed a diet of seeds they will die of dehydration.

Edited

I had absolutely no idea about not putting seeds down when chick's are around , I thought the parents would eat the seeds and give them more energy to get the right bugs for the chick's.
